The Holo Hookup April 2018 "Tulip" Review
Just a heads up, this subscription does not come with an info sheet. All of the value estimates are from what a different holographic polish from the brand would cost. Also, holographic polishes are notoriously difficult to photograph. I did my best, but I promise you that all of the polishes look even better in person.
Cupcake Polish in Shut Your Tulips, 15 mL – Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here)
Shut Your Tulips is this awesome yellow-orange linear holo with a ton of silver glitter thrown into the mix. This is what I imagine Goldi-Locks hair would look like in real life. I truly have no polish like it in my collection.
Here it is on. The application was easy-breezy and the brush was easy to control.
Different Dimension in Tulip Mania, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here)
Tulip Mania is a very bright berry-pink holo with a little bit of shimmer as well. I wish the yellow and gold holo shift that you can see in the bottle was more evident when actually wearing the color, but this is still a beautiful shade.
Here it is on. No complaints on the application and the polish was a good consistency— not too thick or watery.
Tulip Mania looks extremely similar to Forever, the Different Dimension Polish I got in the February box. As you can see they are not quite the same, but I wish there was more diversity in the shades considering I have only been a subscriber for three months.
Glisten & Glow in Kiss My Tulips, 15 mL – Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here)
Kiss My Tulips is an awesome deep eggplant purple holo with silver micro-glitter. This polish makes me think of royalty, and I can totally picture a Victorian queen wearing a cape of this shade and having the matching nail polish (was nail polish a thing during the Victorian era? Was holo?).
The brush was a bit wide so I had to pay a tiny bit more care during application, but the polish applied smoothly.
Laquester in Tulipazuli, 10 mL - Estimated Value $11.91 (€8.50) (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Laquester here)
This stunner is a blue holo in a jelly base that builds in intensity as you apply it, and it has a pink-bronze color shift and multicolored flakeies! Such a unique polish that I am thrilled to have, though I am bummed the bottle is on the smaller side (a standard nail polish is 15 ml).
Here is three coats of awesomeness. Since this is an exclusive polish to the Holo Hookup, I will probably use this as a top coat over other polishes going forward.
Here is the nail art I did using the polishes in this months box. I did three coats of a sheer cream polish before using a nail art brush to do leopard print spots in all four colors. This feels like the perfect spring mani to me, and I think the Tulip theme was awesome for March.
Verdict: As I mentioned in previous reviews, The Holo Hookup is the only place where you can currently get four different polishes from the four featured brands. If you are used to only the polishes from Ulta or Sallys, you may think the $44 cost of the box is high. I disagree. I only had to pay for one shipping cost instead of four, and I got four exclusive nail polish shades. I loved the Tulip theme and how unique Shut Your Tulips and Tulipazuli were. I wish the different dimension polish wasn't so similar to the one included in Februarys box, but overall I think this was a great box. In terms of how long the color will last, I top all of my nails with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and I have never had an issue with my holo polishes chipping.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out. Check back here for when the April box (which is Tulip themed!) goes on sale.
Value Breakdown: I got four polishes for $44, which means each polish cost $11. Considering the estimated value for each one is higher than that, and if I were to purchase a polish from each brand individually I would have four shipping costs, I really think this is a good deal for what you get!
