Trash Club by Divine Trash Vintage April 2018 Review
The irreverent, playful vibe of Divine Trash Vintage is right up my alley. I was quite the thrift store shopper in my day—the kind who loved to indulge in all the big patterns, wacky shapes, and quirky accents that thrift store shopping had to offer. Recently, my style's been much more reserved and casual (lots of black, white, gray, and denim), but this subscription has been an awesome connection back into the whimsical world of vintage shopping for me. When you sign up, you'll get to note things like sizing, height, weight, and gender identity, but they also give you an opportunity to talk open-endedly about your style. I'm much more of a minimalist than this creative vintage crew was probably prepared for, but so far, they've done a solid job of supplying both very neutral, classic looks and the statement looks that really spark my imagination. (Like last month's jacket—the total opposite of modern minimalism, but my inner child freaked out when she saw it come out of the bag. It's been a source of fun and smiles ever since.)
I should also mention that they also have a cool little widget where you're shown laydowns (like Polyvore boards) of different styles of outfits, and you click to remove ones you dislike. It's really handy in defining exactly what my look is and isn't. That said, in my experience, they tend to play around rather than sending things that 100% fit your preferences all of the time. It's not a bad thing in my book—the variety gets me out of my shell and as I mentioned, helps keep the playful part of my style alive and happy. I think part of that is because vintage and modern, trendy clothes don't really go hand-in-hand. If you were like "I really love 50s style clothes and accessories!" I think you'd be A-OK. I'm a bit more of a challenge, hehe.
They also dropped a retro matchbook in the package!
This month, I got not one, but TWO items! There's always a handwritten note on the back of the hangtag. Because the Divine Trash folks don't just send you your items, but source them, too, they're able to give fun little details about the pieces you get. This one even has a story about the woman who originally owned the purse I got!
Black Short-Sleeved Top
The first item was a really simple, very nowadays Anna black top. As the note explains, a look this understated is a rarity in the Divine Trash universe, but they found one just for me. Not only that, they found a shirt that fits me beautifully! The top is 100% polyester, so it has a smooth, almost satiny feel to it. It's really lightweight, but not quite sheer, so it'll be great for the summer. This might not be the most exciting top in the world, but it's just what my closet needs. Especially since the pieces I get from this subscription have been really big and bold lately, I'm happy to see them play to the more understated end of my style spectrum.
Small Boho Crossbody Leather Bag
The second item I got is this ivory-colored leather bag. It's not something I might've picked up for myself, since I don't tend towards a lot of boho items, but there's something about it that feels really artful and intriguing to me. It's about 6 inches square and has a little toggle closure. The bag is leather in the purest sense of the term—super raw on the inside and treated on the outside to make it that creamy color. I love the embroidery and the neutral colors. It's rustic, but fresh in an unexpected way. I'm excited to try and incorporate this into some different outfits and feel out my boho side.
The Verdict: I really liked this month's shipment! I felt like my style was at once being heard but also expanded by the two picks I got. No doubt that the black top will get tons of use in outfits of all different kinds, from the classic to the quirky. The bag is going to be a bit more of a challenge for me, but it's just so neutral that I think it might be more versatile than I think of boho styles being. I just love the personality of this subscription and the uniqueness of what clothes and accessories I get. I appreciate the curation, too. You can definitely find products like these at thrift stores for a fraction of the cost, but as all avid thrift store folks know, thrifting is a process—there's a lot of hunting to be done. So for someone like me who doesn't have as much time anymore to scour thrift store offerings, this subscription is convenient and fun!
