BBQ Box April 2018 Review

The card that’s included boasts a recipe from Mr. Mixon himself, offering insight on how to use all of the delicious goodies that are in the box!

Every month is a new recipe, and this month is for Korean BBQ Pork Belly Sliders! I’m a huge pork belly fan, and I’ve recently been turn on to Korean BBQ through new foods I’ve been trying. Sliders are so fun; their small size makes them so visually pleasing to serve, and also means you can have like, four, and not feel any guilt, right? I’m so excited to see what Myron has in mind to make this dish taste divine!

True Jerky, The Sinsa, Korean BBQ, 2.25 oz -

True Jerky, The Sinsa, Korean BBQ, 2.25 oz - Retail Value $6.99

You gotta love a box that comes with its own snacks, and this month’s was a firecracker offering! You can tell just by looking that this jerky is definitely on the spicy side - there are visible flecks of hot pepper, but there’s some sweetness as well, which balances everything out. I’m a wimp when it comes to spice, so these weren’t perfectly to my taste, but I can certainly appreciate the craft here, and the meat definitely tasted high-quality. This bag cracked me up with a surprise inside - a single-use tooth flosser!

Silicone Basting Brush

Silicone Basting Brush - Estimated Value $9.99 (based on a similar product)

These boxes really do a good job of offering useful tools. I love silicone brushes for all kinds of applications, and of course, this one looks like it would stand up to the heat of being near the fire or the oven. This is clearly a good implement for basting meats or veggies with sauces and marinades, but I’ll let you in on a personal cooking secret of mine: when making homemade popcorn, this type of brush is the perfect tool for applying melted butter to every bite!

Chung Jung One Korean BBQ Sauce And Marinade, 14.5 oz - Estimated Value $9.99 (based on a similar product)

I recently tried a Korean BBQ food truck and fell in love with the flavors! Myron’s recipe calls for marinating the pork belly in the entire bottle, and being sure to massage it in for full flavor! This sauce is soooo good; it’s garlicky, tangy, and really rich - I think it’s the sesame oil I’m tasting that adds the extra depth. I think this would be best on strongly-flavored meats like this pork belly, or red meat like beef or even lamb.

K-POP Sauce, 9 oz - Buy a 2-pack for $19.98 (found here for $16.99)

It’s not every day you encounter a sauce that was founded on Kickstarter, but this condiment was crowdfunded for over $35,000! Made from gochujang, which is a red chili paste paired with rice gluten, and meju, or fermented soybeans, this bright red sauce will appeal to sriracha addicts wanting to try something new. I would definitely say this is a condiment to use sparingly though - even though I received the medium variety, this stuff is so, so hot!

Verdict: Another meat-tastic time was had with this month’s BBQ Box! I loved the recipe this month, including the recipe from Myron for a teriyaki slaw to put over the sliders. Pork belly is one of my favorite cuts of meat, and I loved that the theme this month was Korean BBQ, a type of food that I’m starting to explore myself. Even though the jerky and the K-Pop sauce were on the hotter side, I really enjoyed the strong theme and being exposed to new items!
