April 2018 Doki Doki by Japan Crate Review

Isn’t the illustration on the pamphlet this month absolutely gorgeous? This month’s theme is Time Capsule, so let’s turn back time!

80’s Sanrio Retro Cup

These cheery cups have an 80’s aesthetic, and they’re a really great size! I love the color palette, and I really appreciated the paperwork noting that this piece is dishwasher-safe, but not microwave-safe. I received the Pom Pom Purin variety of this item, and I love his little skateboard!

Poke Ball Pouch

It’s hard to believe Pokemon has been around since 1996 - it makes me feel so old! This was a perfect item for this month’s theme because Pokemon has been around for a lot of people since childhood, and it’s really useful; it could hold makeup, or change, or be used as a travel pouch for jewelry or small items.

Badtz-Maru Coin Purse

This little penguin is another character that was made popular in the 90’s, as well as Hana-Maru, the white seal also on this change purse. Badtz-Maru is known for being a bad little dude, making fun of things he finds silly, but I personally just love his sassy little expression!

Sanrio Coloring Book

I feel like you couldn’t have a time capsule of my personal childhood without including a coloring book - I still love to color as an adult! I recognize a lot of the characters in this book, including Hello Kitty and Little Twin Stars, and I love that the kanji is broken down into hiragana or katakana for those just learning Japanese.

Sanrio Outdoor Mat

I had never seen one of these mats before receiving this box, and I think it’s genius! Apparently, these mats are pretty common in Japan, to take to parks, the beach, or any outdoor event. I can totally see why; they’re really easy to stick in a bag without taking up much room, and they’d protect from wet ground. I can’t wait to take the Little Twin Stars pattern I received to concerts this summer!

Tuxedo Sam Plush Keychain

One of the best things about receiving this box is that there is usually a new plush friend of some sort, and this month, it’s a keychain! This character, Tuxedo Sam, has been around since 1979, and according to legend, has a tie for every single day of the year!

Verdict: I love the phrase on the Doki Doki website that calls these boxes “care packages” - I think that’s such an apt description! This box was so much fun to go through and remember things from being a kid, like the coloring book and Poke Ball Pouch, as well as to be introduced to something new, like the Little Twin Stars mat. I always look forward to a new one of these boxes because they’re so full of surprises!

Looks like they are using Daiso which is their version of a dollar store to fill up their crates. Daiso has a license with sanrio. FYI, everything but the pouch and the cup are from there. You are essentially getting a super low value crate. Maybe this tricks some people but there are Daisos on the west coast.

Tuxedo Sam, the HK coloring book, and LTS mat would have been a nice addition to my cute stash.
