Frank And Oak Style Plan April 2018 Review
When you first sign up for this subscription, you fill out a quick style profile that captures your sizing preferences and your sense of style. (Choose from Casual, Classic, and Creative). Then, you can pick whether you'd like a monthly or a bi-monthly plan and set your budget for each box (under $150 or $150+).
Before my box shipped, I got this email inviting me to hop in and preview my order. The preview process reminds me a lot of picking which recipes I want off a meal kit subscription menu, haha! The page that opens up has about 12 products total on the page, and the three products set to ship in my order are at the top of the page and marked with green check marks. The plan includes three items, but you can choose more than three if you'd like. The prices are all discounted for you, so it's a deal compared to just shopping the regular site.
I opened my preview page as soon as the email arrived and saw a few out of the ordinary pieces including a jumpsuit that really piqued my interest, but I was looking at it on my phone and decided I'd come back to the process later when I had my laptop handy. However, when I came back to my preview page the next day, I noticed that the jumpsuit was gone. My bet is that the selection changes a bit based on availability. So I decided to nab a few staple tees to get me set up for summer! I'm still super excited about what I got, but I'm going to try to be a little quicker on the draw next month!
Here's the invoice for the three pieces I ended up with, plus the return instructions. (If you didn't know before, Frank and Oak is a Canadian company, which explains all the French you'll see on their packaging and paperwork!)
Okay, let's see these tees!
Striped Linen Boyfriend Tee in Navy Blazer, Size Medium - Retail Value $39.50, Member Price $34.50
Ugh, this t-shirt is a DREAM. The fabric is made of 55% linen and 45% tencel—two extremely breathable, cool, lightweight textiles that are just what summer weather ordered. The top is just a smidge sheer, and the cut has a slightly boxy shape, which suits my shorter torso nicely. The high crew neckline is awesome, too! I have plenty of black-striped tees, but I love the lower contrast of this navy-striped one. While I love the downtown-in-December vibe of my black and white tees, I'm digging the tacos-on-the-lakeshore aesthetic of this navy striped look!
Washed Boy T-Shirt in Hibiscus, Size Medium - Retail Value $24.50, Member Price $19.50
My wardrobe is built around a bunch of neutral basics, but let's face it. When bright summer days come around, even I can't resist adding a pop of playful color into my outfits! I'm not a fan of red, but I do think orange flatters me pretty nicely (both because of the just-barely-there olive tone in my pale Irish-Italian skin and the blue hue of my eyes). This "hibiscus" color is admittedly a little redder in person than I'd typically reach for, but I think it's pretty darn cute nonetheless. The 100% cotton tee is a different cut from the first one—there's much more length to it, though the shoulders and sleeves are just boxy enough to complement my broader shoulders beautifully. It's the kind of shirt I'll probably wear tucked in (which, honestly, is how I wear most t-shirts anyway), but I feel like it'd be super flattering untucked on longer torsos. (Like the skirt, by the way? It's from my last Golden Tote!) Oh, and while it's not quite as breezy as the linen/tencel tee, this cotton look is comfortable, lightweight, and so easy to wear.
Washed Boy T-Shirt in Aztec, Size Medium - Retail Value $24.50, Member Price $19.50
Is it just me or is brown having a moment? I'm digging the warm, yet still very versatile hue of this toasty brown hue. This tee is the same cut and composition as the Hibiscus tee, so it's just as comfortable and easy to tuck into high-waisted jeans, shorts, or skirts. Because it's 100% cotton, it feels like the kind of top that'll become more relaxed and breezy with every wash.
Verdict: I am so smitten with Frank and Oak! Unlike other subscriptions I've tried, which tend to focus on trend-conscious clothes, this program is all about versatile, classic pieces made with quality fabrics. I like that these staple styles can stay in my closet season after season. Frank and Oak is all about sustainable, ethical fashion choices (they're cutting down on water in their denim manufacturing, using sustainable fabrics, etc.) so it's not surprising that the very products they offer are designed to have a longer shelf-life than many fast fashions out there. Plus, I love that I get a little bit of control over what I get, rather than it being totally random. Will you love this subscription as much as I do? I think it comes down to whether you like the aesthetic or not. But the quality and comfort is all there! The prices are around what I'd expect to pay at the Gap for similar styles.
To Wrap Up:
Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, each box is customized based on your style plan. Under the new $25 styling fee plan, boxes ship automatically on the 1st of the month, and you can log in 2 days before shipment to add or remove items or skip the month altogether. That said, you can still follow the product links above to shop these items for yourself from their site catalog!
Value Breakdown: I paid the member's price of $73.50 for the three items I received this month, which would have cost me $88.50 at their regular retail prices. If I decide to return all three items, I will pay the $25 styling fee and will be refunded the remaining amount, but I can keep any one item at the discounted price and no styling fee will be charged.
