Love With Food Gluten Free April 2018 Review
I'm excited to explore this month's gluten-free Love with Food box. I don't eat a strictly gluten-free diet, but my husband and I cook and eat gluten-conscious diets due to the widespread health benefits of cutting back on grains and carbs. Ready to see what's inside?
I can really relate to this month's theme of "Transform." I'm about 5 months pregnant and my body is transforming in ways that are blowing my mind! I love that this month's theme aligns with my own transformation because I'm always looking for healthy ways to nourish my nearly constant ravenous hunger. In addition to the monthly info card, I received a few coupons, including one for Sun Basket. Check out our reviews to learn more.
Chimes Original Ginger Chews, 1.5 oz. – Buy a 1lb. bag for $11.43
These individually wrapped treats are exactly as they seem: a chewy ginger candy. I love ginger, but I don't love chewy candies because of how they stick in my teeth, so while these were spot-on for me flavor-wise, I don't think I'll gobble up the whole pack. I do really like, though, that the ingredients list is short and sweet: cane sugar, ginger, and tapioca starch. No weird chemicals are hidden in there!
Torie & Howie Chewie Fruities, 4oz - Buy a pack of 12 for $48.00 (Found on sale here for $29.99)
These candies are like a "healthy" version of Starbursts! I put healthy in quotes because they're still a sugary candy, but they have sustainably sourced ingredients and are colored using only beet juice and turmeric. I love that. Of the flavors in my bag, I tried pomegranate-nectarine and orange-honey first. They're really yummy! You already know I'm not huge on chewy candies, but if I were to indulge in one, the light and fruity flavors of these guys might have to be it.

Laughing Giraffe Lemon Snakaroon, 2 oz x 2 - Buy a 6 oz. bag for $7.49
I've tried Snakaroons before and if you're a fan of coconut snacks 'n' desserts, you'll undoubtedly enjoy these. They have a shredded coconut texture to them and this particular kind has a light lemon flavor. I'm more of a chocolate kind of gal, but since becoming pregnant, I've had a taste for zesty citrus flavors! I really liked this treat, and since it's rich, just one was perfectly satisfying, which is awesome because it only has 5g of sugar in it. The perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth without going overboard.
Skinny Dipped Almonds, Dark Chocolate Cocoa, 1.5 oz. – Buy a 3.5 oz bag for $30.00
This snack is totally up my alley! I always keep almonds in my desk for a quick, healthy protein boost...but when those inevitable 3:00 hunger pangs roll in, it's so easy to break down and eat the donuts or cookies someone brought into the office instead. This is the best of both worlds. They're dusted with dark chocolate (my favorite kind of chocolate) so they have a sweet hint to them but are still healthy. Yum!

Pik-Nik 50% Less Salt Shoestring Potatoes, 1.75 oz x 2 - Buy a 2-pack of 4 oz. cans for $8.13
This snack is such a throwback! I haven't seen shoestring potato chips since I was a kid. While gluten-free and made with 50% less salt, I think it'd still be a stretch to consider this snack "healthy." I broke open one can and found them to be a little bland with the lower salt content. If I'm going to do the potato chip thing, I want to really enjoy it, so I tucked the other can away to pass along to a friend. Note that once you open the seal on these cans, it's hard to close them again (actually, I don't even know if it's possible—I gave up on trying after a minute or so), so it an eat-in-one-sitting type of thing.
TruWomen Peanut Butter Cup Protein Bar, 1.69oz - Buy a 12 pack for $23.44
Now, this peanut butter cup protein bar is totally my speed. The first thing I check on the nutrition facts of protein bars is if it has more protein than sugar. This one passes the test! It boasts 12g of protein and 7g of sugar. Not bad at all! I think TruWomen must have updated the name of this flavor—all I could find online was "Smother-Fudger Peanut Butter," but I couldn't find an obvious difference between that and the "Peanut Butter Cup" flavor that I received. It's rather rich, so I ate half to start and will save the other half for later, as I often do with protein bars.

AvenueSweets Apple Caramels, 2 candies – Buy a 50-pack for $25.00 (Found on sale here for $19.99)
While caramel swirls in cookies and brownies give me heart eyes, caramel candies are about the least desirable snack to me. To be honest, I couldn't even bring myself to pop one of these guys in my mouth! But, Ragan, who reviewed this month's Love With Food Deluxe Box, loved them. Here's what she had to say:
These are true dairy-based caramels but they are vegetarian. I love caramels and these were a little sticky but not so bad I thought they would pull off any dental work (I have some Invisalign “attachments” right now). I will not be buying more because the temptation is too great to just eat a whole bunch in one sitting.

Jana Banana Original Banana Bar with Peanut Butter, 1.34 oz. – Buy 12 bars for $13.90
Everything from the packaging to the look to the taste of this snack bar is appealing to me! I noticed that some reviews say they didn't like that this bar tasted like overripe bananas, and honestly, they have a fair point, I just so happen to like that flavor. Mixed with peanut butter, this bar is delish! With only 4g of protein to 15g of sugar, this really isn't a protein bar (it doesn't claim to be, though), but it also seems to be wayyyy better for you than many other similar bars. I might not buy this for myself since I typically look for a higher protein content in my snacks, but I wouldn't mind receiving it again in a future box!

Wai Lana Cassava Pops in Volcano – Retail Value $1.39
I shouldn't have expected anything less from a "Volcano" flavor, but these chips are actually pretty spicy! But, in that quickly dissipating way that keeps you coming back for more, haha. I like how Ragan described these chips in her Love With Food Deluxe review: "These had a Pringles-like quality to them, probably because of how they are made (they’re more of a composite material instead of being straight slices of a root vegetable)." I agree with that sentiment, but I found them to be less fake-tasting than Pringles. I liked them!

The Verdict: It was a good month for the Love with Food Gluten-Free box. I particularly enjoyed the almonds and both bars. If I could tweak anything about this box, it would be to include less candy, but perhaps I'd feel differently if the type of candy included was something more aligned with my tastes. Additionally, I know it can be challenging for folks with a strict gluten-free diet to find sweets that work well with their restrictions, so in that sense, it's nice that a variety of sweet and savory items were included! Value-wise, I'd say this box is a good deal, especially when you consider that it saves snackers the trouble of having to sift through nutrition labels at the grocery store and they can just dive right in!
