OREO Cookie Club May 2018 Review

If you've been to a Target, Walmart, or similar store this month, you may have noticed end caps full of the following flavors that are part of the "My OREO Creation Contest" that is happening. Like the potato chip companies before them, OREO thought it'd be a good idea for the common person to create a new OREO flavor, and they've narrowed it down to three. You can vote for the one you think is best here.

OREO Cookie Club has sent all three of the horrifying contestants this month to encourage us to get involved. Let's dive in, shall we?

other side of Coupon for free oreo chocolate candy bar Coupon for free oreo chocolate candy bar

Coupon for a Free OREO Chocolate Candy Bar, 1.44 oz - Retail Value: Up to $0.99 (but like, c'mon)

Once again, they've sent a coupon instead of just mailing me a chocolate bar. A reader pointed out that coupons prevent said chocolate bar potentially melting during transit, so I will take that into consideration. I'll pop this in my wallet and hope I remember to cash it in the next time I'm at a store that carries them.

Pina Colada OREOs open Pina Colada OREOs Pina Colada OREOs on a plate

Oreo Thins in Pina Colada, 10.1 oz. - Retail Value $2.99

This flavor comes in the form of the OREO "Thins" which is just how it sounds. The sandwich cookies are thinner and lighter than the average OREO with a seemingly thinner layer of cream inside. I enjoy tropical cocktails, and I like both pineapple and coconut, but this cookie just tastes like perfume to me. It gave me a slight headache with its sweetness and the artificial flavor seems very apparent to me. Next!

Kettle Corn OREOs open Kettle Corn OREOs Kettle Corn OREOs on a plate

Oreo Cookies in Kettle Corn, 10.7 oz. - Retail Value $2.99

Kettle Corn is probably one of my least favorite snacks on the planet, so I was not looking forward to trying these. I know, I sound like a total hater this month, but these flavors are just... ugh. I noticed that the package states that there are "puffed millet pieces" in the cream, so that should add an interesting texture. These OREOs are of normal size, although I think I read a review on Amazon that points out that all of these limited edition flavors seem to be closer to the "double stuff" OREO size. There is quite a bit of cream in there! As soon as I opened the package, I was slapped across the face with a sugary-sweet smell. These actually do not taste as bad as I was envisioning, but boy oh boy are they SWEET. I couldn't really notice the puffed millet with all the cookie parts mixed in while chewing, but if you're one of the people that licks the cream off, you'd probably have a unique experience. If you gave me one of these and said it was caramel corn flavored, I'd probably believe you, but I think that may be due to my inexperience with kettle corn.

Cherry Cola OREOs open Cherry Cola OREOs Cherry Cola OREOs on a plate

Oreo Cookies in Cherry Cola, 10.7 oz. - Retail Value $2.99

Ok. I am preparing myself for this one. The filling is half regular white cream and half red cream that has "popping candy" in it and welp, they nailed the flavor. These certainly taste a lot like cherry cola! The fizziness of the candy didn't really show up for me until the cookie was almost gone but it slowly lingered on the back of my tongue. I have to hand it to them- I would never have thought to add that layer of cola-ness to a cookie. This is probably my favorite one of the three, but I still find it completely unnecessary. Haters are going to indeed hate, I guess.

Before you scroll down to the "swag" item, take a guess at what it is as you view it.

OREO cookie dunker

A toothpick to get those stubborn OREO bits out of your teeth?

A "cream scraper" for those who like to separate it from the cookie?

OREO Cookie Dunker

A dunker! At least, that's what we are gathering. Since the OREO Cookie Club doesn't come with an info card, and this promo swag came in an unmarked plastic bag, we had fun guessing what it was until Lacey definitively said it was a dunker because she had seen them before. For those OREO eaters who love to dunk their cookies in milk but don't want to risk getting milk on their fingers (¯\_(ツ)_/¯), the dunker is here for you. I was surprised at how snuggly it sat there. I thought it'd be rather precarious, but it was a perfect fit and I had no worry that it'd fall off.

Lastly, they always included a recipe that you can make with the included OREOs. I never really count this as an item, but they send it none-the-less and it also provided a clue as to what the swag item was. Here, they've told us how to crush up OREOs to make little cups that you can add milk to and dunk whole cookies into. Of course, you'll need butter, milk chocolate, and milk for this too. 😉

bottom of box

Well, what do you think?

Verdict:  OREO Cookie Club Subscription Box is quite a head-scratcher. The cost is $19.99 per box, but you have to purchase a minimum of a 3-month subscription for $59.97. Since we received three full-size packages that total $8.97, you'd have to imagine that the dunker (and recipe) are worth $10.03 even IF you count the coupon having a value of $0.99, simply to break even. As always, this seems pretty farfetched since it's ridiculously easy to acquire these flavors at a big box store or even online. The value simply isn't there unless you are SO into OREOs that you NEED to have the swag that is only available in this box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? After digging around the questions on the Amazon order page, it looks like you have to order the month before what would be your first delivery. If that's the case, you'd receive the June box if you order today.

Value Breakdown: At $19.99 for this box, you're paying approximately $5.00 per item (three packages of cookies + the dunker). I don't count the coupon or recipe in this breakdown.

I am pretty sure I am in the minority on this box, but I love oreos and love to see what new flavors are out there. I guess I am a little confused why we are even reviewing a box simply to get viewers to laugh or at times just ridicule the box.

Hopefully the curators of the box read feedback and see what people are saying, and then make some adjustments.

This sub is a rip off. All three of those cookies are available at my local grocer for $2.50 each. It just baffles me, not even an exclusive item.

It’s the lack of what’s in the box for the money they are asking. I’m sure if it was a more reasonable price it would be different. From a subscription box for Oreo you would expect like some exclusive subscriber only flavors or some really cool merchandise , but everything so far is what you can buy in store and the “swag” is not too exciting. I enjoy the reviews for a good laugh honestly some may not see the humor and some may.

Your “lack-of-cookies” monthly sacrifice makes my life complete! It also makes me giggle a lot. Thank you!

I’m with everyone else…would never purchase this box but love the reviews!!! My kids love Oreos but I’m more of a chocolate chip cookie fan. If there were a box with amazing chocolate chip cookies I would probably buy it, whatever the cost.

Marne, the dunkers are available on Amazon for $9 for a 3-pack, so that thing is only worth 3 bucks, making the recipe worth $7 HAHAHAHAHA

I actually found this month’s box to be a slight improvement compared to other.months boxes. I’ve never seen those flavors before so I thought they were finally stepping their game up,I live in NYC.

I was going with OREO splitter. You know, for those of us who can’t spin a cookie open. I’d never buy this box, the value is ridiculous but it’s super fun to read about. Love the review Marne!

bunnygirlbrem

I totally thought it was a cream scraper, and then Marne suggested that that’s what it could be. Hilarious! I agree, great review!

Reply ButtonReply

Helen

I think it needs to be a cream scraper. If Oreo cookie packets get any smaller moms will be splitting them to give their kids a treat. Sorry Tommy you get the cookie part this time. It’s Suzy’s turn for the cream. Enter the scraper. 😉

Marne….I absolutely LOVE your reviews of this ridiculous box every month. I literally feel my mood get better when I read them. I have no clue as to why this box is still offered; I cannot begin to imagine even a dedicated Oreo lover would think this is worth the money. And yet I get excited every month seeing the review has posted!

It is an oreo chucker! For throwing the nasty flavored oreos at people you don’t like!

Bahaha these reviews are the best.
I’ve gotta say though, I’ve always wondered… It seems like subscription boxes come in 2 types – there are those for people hoping for fun stuff at a great value, and then there are the ones like this that seem to be more as a gift idea for people with a lot of money and no idea what to give a loved one. (Not that that is an excuse of course 😛 )

Next time, Marne, you should let someone else open the box and have you try the cookies to guess the flavor! Always enjoy reading your OREO box review.

I knew what the dunker was !! Haha. But you can always put a fork through the cookie and dunk it!

Oh my goodness is this a rip off. I keep reading the reviews waiting for it to improve. Are they joking… All three of those specialty Oreo’s are available at my local Meijer for $2.50 each. And I like the idea of an Oreo dunker it doesn’t offset the cost. They are off their rocker. Maybe this is a good sub for international subscribers (not sure what they have in terms of selections in some countries).

WHY IS THERE EVEN A 12 MONTH OPTION FOR THIS BOX??

Amy

Marne can make a fun review for a sad box 😃

Luna

I love trying new Oreo flavors, but I think I’ll stick to my local grocery store…. not only is it *way* cheaper to experience these new flavors that way, but I can experience them well before they’re “launched” in the monthly box.

I saw these flavors two weekends ago, and bought the Pina Colada and Cherry Cola flavors (while I’m a semi-fan of kettle korn (it has to be more like a Cracker Jack variety) it just didn’t sound like it’d taste good to me). I really like the Pina Colada flavor, and while the pop-rock sensation is fun & the cherry cola flavor is there, the sweetness is too much for me. Even when I bought these I couldn’t help but wonder if they’d be featured in the next Oreo box review. Thanks for keeping this one going Marne!

(btw, I thought that device was a tongue scratcher, but a pick to get all of those Oreo bits from my molars could have come in handy today! (that’s what I’d use it for)… I’m still working on finishing those cookies since no one else in my household is much of an Oreo fan)

I cackled with delight when I saw this review pop up. My coworkers and I used to choose a random word or phrase to use during conversation, and thanks to this review, I have a goal of successfully using “puffed millet” in a sentence this week.

I was just going to look at the first picture to see what was included in the box this month (and laugh to myself) but had to scroll all the way through the review again to see what that promo “device” was. I totally thought it was a tooth scraper to get the Oreo bits off your teeth too. Aaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha. I was laughing even harder than usual with these reviews.

I was just this morning at my local grocery store, Albertsons, and i saw all 3 of these flavors displayed by the registers. IMO this box is such a rip off.

Sherry

This is my favorite box – and by favorite I mean I love to read the reviews and comments 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

1) I totally knew it was a cookie dunker by image alone. What does that say about me, I wonder
2) I would love to see a comparison of this box vs how many packages/different flavors of oreos you or someone else could buy at your local store for $19.99. Really hammer home that perspective!

Reply ButtonReply

Marne Orenich

Jessica- we’ve thought the same thing re: “how many could we buy for $19.99?”! Perhaps we can make it happen!

Reply ButtonReply

Helen

There is nothing like an Oreo box review to distract from the train wreck further down the list. 😉 I just saw a display with these three flavors at the local grocery store. I remember because I thought how disgusting they all seemed to me. The dunker toy is pretty funny but this box really needs to step it up in a big way.

Barbie

I totally agree. So happy they posted this review today.

Hoping that the Oreo Cookie Club Box is so bad this month that it brings our community back together in unison! I feel like no matter what side of the debate your on for that other new sub box, or what side of the aisle you’re on politically, we can all agree:

This sub sucks!…to a laughable degree.

StephKlos

Exactly, Barbie. The Oreo Cookie Club box: the one we can all agree on. LOL!!
