Sticky Kit May 2018 Review
Hyogensha x Junichi Nakahara "Pattern" Postcard
In addition to including several sheets of stickers each month, Sticky Kit always tosses in a non-sticker stationery item. For the first time since I began reviewing this subscription, I received a full-size postcard rather than a mini card! The front features a retro illustration of a lady holding flowers and the back is blank. This card could be used as art, as a traditional postcard (you'd just have to write in your own address lines), or used as a regular card that isn't meant to go through the mail. It's a great one to have around for "just because" letters to friends.
Ryu Ryu "Noshi & Mizuhiki" Stickers
I didn't realize this until after doing a quick internet search, but there's a Japanese art form called "noshi," which is creating a decorative add-on to attach to gifts. While noshi are often folded pieces of art, it's something separate from origami. Mizuhiki is the art of knotting cord into a decorative piece, and you can use your mizuhiki as a noshi! So, the colorful stickers in the top two rows of this sheet are traditional noshi, and the red and gold knots 'n' bows are mizuhiki. This is such a cute idea for stickers and they would make such a cute way of sealing an envelope!
Mind Wave "Great Men" Stickers
At first I thought these stickers just featured random old men doing various activities, which I found kind of funny, but now I see that they're actual men in history! Also amusing! I recognize Einstein, Isaac Newton, Ben Franklin, and a few others. These stickers really have the potential to add personality and funny commentary to a scrapbook or note!
Ryu Ryu "Numbers" Stickers
This sheet is another great scrapbook contribution. They may be all different shapes, sizes, and fonts, but the black, silver, and gold theme provides some continuity that makes this set not feel all over the place. They would be good for indicating the year or a house number, an athlete's jersey number, and more. So many uses for these!
Mind Wave "Nostalgic Townscape" Stickers
These stickers are so intriguing! I think they're meant to represent various products, ads, and other mundane things you'd find around town, but many of them are unfamiliar to me. Still, I love the little peek into another culture's "around town" novelties, and it's fun to imagine what might be on this sticker sheet if it were a snapshot of my own city!
Mind Wave "Nostalgic Vehicles" Stickers
This sticker sheet is my favorite of the month! It features all sorts of old school vehicles illustrated in such detail, and the artistry just makes me feel so nostalgic. I can see these guys being used in reference to any sort of road trip, vacation, or travel in general. There are so many distinct memories that can be tied to transportation experiences!
Synapse Japan "Talk" Sticker Flakes
Sticky Kit also usually includes a set of sticker flakes, which are individual stickers instead of coming on a sheet. This set of 40 features 8 different designs. Each is a person with a differently shaped word bubble. They're pretty petite, so they might be too small to use as a bookplate (unless you wrote super tiny or just used your initials) or to mark the subject of a notebook. I think I might use them as cute tabs on the dividers of my filing cabinet!
Verdict: So much personality in this month's Sticky Kit! I had fun exploring all the faces that popped up on the sticker sheets that feature people and I really enjoyed learning about noshi & mizuhiki, as well as trying to figure out some of the unfamiliar icons on the Nostalgic Townscape sheet. It was a great month! This sub costs $14.99 ($12.99 a month + $2 shipping), and I received 5 sheets of stickers, one pack of 40 sticker flakes, and a postcard.
