Bokksu June 2018 Review
First, you'll see a thank you note from founder Danny Taing. The breaking news is that they have a new marketplace to buy snacks that will improve shipping times.
The snack theme this month is "Nagoya Eats" and focuses on the fourth most populous city in Japan.
On these pages, you'll learn more about Nagoya and get quick facts with a map of where it's located.
The pamphlet unfolds to reveal descriptions of all of the snacks this month.
If you tag Bokksu on social media, you could win a chance to get your next box for free!
Nagoya Kinsyachi Lague De Chat x2 - Buy 12 for $30.00
The pamphlet describes this as "decadent" and I have to agree. Inside the super thin cookie that is stamped with a golden carp with the head of a lion (the symbol of Nagoya), there is a layer of white chocolate cream inside two layers of cream cheese. My word, this is tasty! Just one is enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.
Ebi Crunch - Retail Value $3.00
This mix of peanuts and rice crackers is unbelievably delicious! The rice crackers are seasoned with shrimp, black pepper, curry powder and garam masala which brings just a touch of spice and would be perfect to enjoy with a cold beer on a summer afternoon! These are really addictive and have me clamoring for more.
Ogura Toast Langue De Chat x2 - Buy 30 pieces for $75.00
This delicate little cookie is inspired by Ogura toast which is a favorite breakfast item in Nagoya. The white chocolate filling is flavored with red bean paste which takes place of the spread and butter that topped on morning toast. This is another ridiculously tasty treat and if you like red bean paste, you'll love this.
Rich Matcha Cream Sandwich Cookie x2 - Total Retail Value $4.00
This is one of my favorites from the box this month- certainly my favorite sweet snack. I can't get enough matcha and this fancy cookie has a double dose of Uji Matcha that is both in the cookie as well as the filling. This is the perfect cookie for matcha fans and would be perfect with tea!
Tenmusu Senbei Rice Cracker x2 - Buy 12 for $12.00
I love senbei! This crunchy rice cracker is fun to eat and once you start chewing will notice the fish flavor slowly creep in. The flavor is inspired by Tenmusu which is a combination of shrimp tempura and musubi (rice balls) and even has flecks of seaweed backed into it as well.
Mini Red Bean Crackers x2 - Buy 6 packs for $6.00
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this cracker at first and was overjoyed to taste a very lightly sweet red bean flavor with a toasty finish. These are light and not too sweet and not too savory. Very snackable! Each bag has quite a nice amount to get you through a hangry moment. They look rather pretty as well!
Kinsyachi Chocolate Cookie x2 - Currently out of stock
The only non-white chocolate of the box comes in the form of a light crispy cookie that (like the matcha cookie) gives a double dose of what we came for. The chocolate here is in the cream and the cookie but is not overwhelming by any means. This was devoured just as fast as it was opened and I don't feel guilty about it.
Scallion Miso Senbei x2 - Total Retail Value $6.00
The scallion miso senbei brings us to my favorite savory snack of the month. I love how oversized this giant crunchy rice cracker is and it has such a fantastic soy and miso flavor with the help of scallions. I broke each one of these into fours to enjoy a little at a time.
Nagoya Caramel Sandwich Cookie x2 - Buy 12 for $30.00
It's come to my attention that I don't love caramel flavor in the form of a cream. This sandwich cookie isn't my favorite since it is filled with a whipped buttery caramel cream filling with raisins throughout. I have nothing against raisins, but this crumbly cookie is just a little too sweet for me.
Nagoya Hojica Tea x3 - Total Retail Value $3.00
The final item this month is the tea! Each Bokksu box contains tea to enjoy your snacks with and this sencha from Nagoya comes in a lovely mesh bag. At first whiff, this tea smells quite earthy and the flavor that follows is the same. It has a bit of a bitter bite near the end and would pair really nicely with some of the sweeter items from the box.
Bonus Snack!
Bokksu included a bonus snack with a note thanking me for being a "Classic Bokksu Member". I, unfortunately, cannot identify the snack, but I love that they look like little hashbrowns and they are definitely a savory rice cracker of some sort. These have the flavor and texture I love from senbei but in a smaller bite-size form.
Verdict: Bokksu was awesome this month! They curated a wonderful box with the perfect mix of sweet and savory. There was only one snack I didn't care for this time (looking at you, caramel cream cookie) so I consider it a big success! For $39.00, I got a total of 21 snacks in 11 different forms. I love receiving multiples of snacks so I can enjoy more of the ones I love.
