Love With Food Deluxe Box June 2018 "Live" Review
Usually, the theme from the information card doesn’t have much to do with the box. This month, there was just the word “Live.”
The box came with this information card. I miss the old information cards that said more about the snacks.
There were several inserts with advertisements and coupons.
Beanitos “Hint of Lime”, 1.2 oz – Buy 6 oz for $4.19 (found on sale here for $3.09)
These are tortilla chips made from white beans instead of corn. But if you have received any food subscription boxes in the past year or two, you probably already know that, because these guys show up ALL THE TIME. Don’t get me wrong, I like these very much, and have purchased this exact flavor from Whole Foods several times, but there is nothing new to see with this snack. (I am impressed that most of these were whole, considering how packed the box was.)
FYI regarding the link above, Vitacost is AWESOME at packaging chips and they will pretty much never arrive broken. (At least, that is true of their Atlanta warehouse.)
Surf Sweets Organic Fruity Bears, 0.5 oz – Buy a 2.75 oz Bag for $2.48 (found on sale here for $2.23)
These are thickened with pectin instead of gelatin, which means I can eat them, which is a win. I have had these before and they are your garden variety fruity, gummy candies. The package was tiny, though – there were only six bears in it (and most of them were yellow).
Chef’s Cut Smoked Beef with Cheddar Cheese, 1.35 oz x 2 – Buy a 6 Pack for $21.95
This was a spoiler item for the month and I was kind of sad there were two. Chef’s Cut is a jerky company and while their product may be high quality, it is still beef so I can’t eat it. In this case, the jerky is paired with dehydrated cheese. (Sorry no picture out of the package, but I am going to try to give these away at work, and no one would take them if they were already open, especially as I’ve been out sick for three days this week…)
Honey Stinger Caramel, 30g – Buy 16 for $22.24
Here is another repeat item. I am not really going to complain about stroopwafels (because that’s what this is). They are sweet and have a satisfying texture and I am a fan and would definitely consider this brand if I was shopping for this type of snack (though usually, I try to minimize my sugar consumption).
Enlightened Roasted Broad Bean Crisps in Sweet Cinnamon, 4.5 oz – Buy 12 Bags for $79 (found on sale here for $49.99)
I have not had this flavor of these before, I’ve only had the sea salt ones. I think I’m going to have to say, I really prefer this type of snack in savory flavors. When I tried these, I thought maybe something was off about my sense of taste since I currently have the worst cold of my adult life (seriously), but my husband says no, these have much too much cinnamon for the amount of sugar present and thinking about it, that explains what I experienced as well.
Janis and Melanie Key Lime Cookies, 1.5 oz x 2 – Retail Value $2.10
It is hard for me to complain about these because I think they are delicious. Back when Love with Food actually used to maintain a well-stocked snack shop, I ordered these with points at least once. Because yes, they are a repeat item. They are sort of hard packaged cookies, but they just melt in your mouth. The “lime” is so mild as to be almost undetectable, but I really do like them anyway. I might place an order from their website, actually, as they also have some very good cheese straws.
Belgian Boys Mini Cookie Stash in Choc ‘o Chip, 1 oz x 2 – Estimated Value $1.66
If you have had the regular version of these (sans chips, and surely you have had the regular version if you’ve been subscribing to Love with Food for very long), it is quite similar to these, which really don’t actually have many chocolate chips in them at all. On the plus side, it means chocolate couldn’t melt in my mailbox in Georgia with temperatures in the high 80s. I do feel that maybe these were a bit old or didn’t travel well, because they had a texture that did not suggest “peak freshness.”
The chocolate chip version doesn’t seem to be available anywhere (like nearly everything on the Belgian Boys site is out of stock) so I based my estimate on an “out of stock” listing of the non-chocolate-chip version of these from the Love with Food site.
Westminster Baking Co. Oyster Crackers, 0.5 oz – Buy 12, 9 oz Bags for $12
We got this exact item just a few months ago. You’ll often get something pretty basic in this subscription, like these (which really need to go in a soup or something), or saltines, or maybe one of those Biscoff cookies they give out on airplanes sometimes. Anyway, these are not hard to find if you want more of them and they are pretty plain to eat on their own.
Hubs Home Cooked Salted Virginia Peanuts, 1 oz – Buy 12 Bags for $15.99 (found here for $13.99)
These are fairly salty and good for snacking. They are large and don’t have any skins in there but like every single one of them had split in half. This doesn’t affect the flavor, obviously. Maybe that is necessary to their processing and/or something that makes these different from Planter’s? I would definitely eat these again if I came across them but probably wouldn’t spend a lot of time seeking them out.
Ocean’s Halo Sea Salt Seaweed Snacks, 0.14 oz – Buy 12 Trays for $13.99
So I just bought like $65 worth of these off Amazon, but in the Texas BBQ, Chili Lime, and Maui Onion flavors. Then, I used some Love with Food points to get more of the Maui Onion ones. I have gotten it into my head lately that I don’t have enough iodine in my diet and this is a way to get it from food instead of supplements. (I don’t eat fish and though we do buy iodized salt, we don’t actually put much of it in our food). This whole package is only 20 calories. If you don’t like the seaweed flavor, go with one of the flavored ones as I do think this brand (which I have received in food subscription boxes many times before) does a really good job with flavors.
Honey Stinger Vanilla, 30g – Buy 16 for $22.24
You don’t get to see a picture of this one out of the package because when I opened it, it started falling into little tiny pieces and making quite a mess. It still tasted pretty good though, and I’m not sure why it fell apart. It looks basically like the other one, but a slightly lighter color.
Wowbutter, 1.12 oz – Buy 17.6 oz for $3.94
I find it kind of funny that you’d get a peanut substitute product in the same box with a bag of peanuts, but oh well. This is made from soy, so of course, you should avoid it if you have soy allergies, but if you don’t, it could be a good option for kids at peanut-free schools. I don’t really think it tastes like peanut butter, but it is spreadable and nutty and you probably notice the difference even less if you have jelly on your sandwich as well.
Verdict: There were 15 items in the June 2018 Love with Food Deluxe Box, counting doubles separately. Honestly, this was not the best Love with Food box for me. I am never excited to get meat products (though to be fair, they are kept to a minimum and this does not promise to be a vegetarian subscription). Although I very much enjoy both the Beanitos and Janis and Melanie cookies, both are repeats for me. I have also had Wowbutter, the oyster crackers, the seaweed strips, Surf Sweets gummies, and various Honey Stingers before. That didn’t leave much room in the box for new discoveries.
