SlutBox by Amber Rose June 2018 Review

SlutBox Booklet

The first thing SlutBox comes with is a large glossy "zine". Two month's in and I think it's the most important part of the box and always learn things I deem to be really important about being respectful and inclusive to everyone!

page 1 & 2 of SlutBox Booklet

The first two pages are the table of contents and a letter from MUVA.

page 3 & 4 of SlutBox Booklet page 5 & 6 of SlutBox Booklet page 7 & 8 of SlutBox Booklet

The next three spreads detail each item included, the retail price, and "Hoe Tips" on how to use them.

page 9 & 10 of SlutBox Booklet

page 11 & 12 of SlutBox Booklet

This month's timeline is "Queer HERstory" which goes through some of the most important queer moments throughout time.

Then, my fast favorite, the Whoreoscopes.

Next, there is a page teaching us "Pronouns 101" which I was JUST talking to a friend about and was eager to read. There's also a simple flowchart on using preferred pronouns.

I found this spread to be really informative because I didn't know where the Pride flag originated (it debuted in San Francisco in 1978, commissioned by Harvey Milk and created by Gilbert Baker) and what all of the colors symbolize. It also changed a bit over the years.

Another helpful 4-page spread is this "Queer Dictionary" that goes over a lot of words and terms pertaining to LGBTQ+ folx. Some are familiar and some are new to me so I found it really enlightening.

This one shows you how to have fun while being respectful at a drag show!

These pages highlight two "Muvas of the Gay Liberation" and explain how Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were integral in defending the rights of and paving the way for LGBTQ peeps.

Want to be a trans ally but aren't sure how? Same! These two pages of the zine explain ways to "push for a more inclusive and actively supportive society". Great tips!

Finally, their showcase of the SlutBox community with "Slut of the Month" and "Sluts Unite".

There's also a short 4-page coloring book included that features positive images to color in any way you choose.

Okay- you ready for the items?! Let's do it!

VYE Eyewear on model

VYE Eyewear Sunglasses - Listed Retail Value $40.00

Okay, I'm just going to say it. These are ridiculously huge on me and I don't think they are my style. BUT- at least they are fun and different. Do I think they are worth $40.00? No, but they definitely look like something Amber Rose would be sporting and these are an accessory that can be rocked while you are out in the sun for your local Pride Parade. I couldn't find this exact pair of sunnies on the VYE Eyewear website even though I think only the protective pouch is "exclusive" to SlutBox. The frames are a thin but sturdy silver metal and the lenses are grey and cover about 50% of my face. When I'm wearing them I feel like I should be in the 1980's or the future (stylistically) which are somehow the same thing. I think you know what I mean. I am eager to see the other styles people got!

Kush Queen Love CBD Bath Bomb

Kush Queen Love CBD Bath Bomb, 25mg - Retail Value $12.99

This lavender, ylang-ylang, bergamot, orange, patchouli, and cedarwood bath bomb is the first offering from Kush Queen and has CBD in it so you can chillax in the bath. CBD is something a handful of my friends have been talking about and using in recent months, and I just recently learned (thanks, Marisa!) the fact that it can be found in both hemp and cannabis, and can really help with a slew of problems like chronic pain, anxiety, and other medical issues. The CBD in this item (along with the other in this box) is derived from hemp and contains no THC. All of the essential oils in this dye and preservative-free fizzy delight are also organic! Another benefit of CBD is that it's anti-inflammatory so this will help soothe away your physical pain as well as some of that mental baggage you've been carrying throughout the day. They suggest soaking for at least 30 minutes to feel the full effects this has to offer... don't mind if I do.

Over EZ Hangover Pill - Retail Value $5.00 (Buy a 6 pack for $30.00)

In the name of subscription box reviews, and to inform you, dear readers, I took this pill last night before going out for beers. It's a tough job, but someone has to look out for you folx! 😉 I'm a little embarrassed to say that I've tried other hangover pills because I get them BAD. The main one I have tried in the past is a kind you take after drinking and I did not have much luck. They direct you to take at least three but up to SIX. This brand, however, you take before drinking (or with your first alcoholic drink) and you only need ONE. Okay, I'll bite. I popped this pleasing duo-toned blue pill into my mouth before heading out to support my girl Kellz DJing and give it a go. Since it was a Monday, I only had 2 beers (Hoegaarden; perhaps the perfect beer for reviewing this box...jk!) and didn't go too wild, but I did end up waking up at 7:30 am feeling fresh as a daisy. I have definitely had hangovers from two beers before, so I'll call this a win. I am intrigued but still a bit skeptic on how this would work on a more "lit" night.

Bijoux Indiscrets Tickle Me Tickler - Retail Value $7.50

Finally, something a little freaky. I know this is only the second month but I was (along with many) expecting some sort of toy or sex object to play with box one, right? Maybe MUVA wants to start us off slow, and that's ok. This cute little black feather tickler by Bijoux Indiscrets comes via Ella Paradis which is a place to explore all sorts of sexy stuff. The tickler is six inches end to end and is wrapped in black ribbon with a little black bow. Although this isn't something I can see using alone, it should be a fun way to segway into less "vanilla" encounters with your willing partner.

EMK Beverly Hills Aurora Cleanser in box back of EMK Beverly Hills Aurora Cleanser box EMK Beverly Hills Aurora Cleanser back of EMK Beverly Hills Aurora Cleanser

EMK Beverly Hills Aurora Cleanser, 6 oz. - Retail Value $35.00

Slut or no slut, we all want great skin, so MUVA has us covered with this Aurora Cleanser from EMK. I'm not familiar with this brand and it doesn't strike me as high-end but in my internet travels it looks like it's been featured in other sub boxes as well. The smell is a little on the sweet side for me, and it has a milky white color with the consistency of a lotion. Perhaps that's why this anti-aging cream cleanser left my face feeling rather moisturized at first after using. That's certainly not a bad thing, but I guess I prefer a more squeaky-clean feeling after using a cleanser and this one was a little more... something. After a few moments, my skin did start to feel a little dry, but it skipped that ultra clean feeling I am always after.

Beecause Charcoal and Clay Mask back of Beecause Charcoal and Clay Mask

Beecause Charcoal and Clay Mask, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $3.75 (Buy 4 oz. for $15.00)

If you've read some of my other reviews, you know I am a sucker for cool packaging and this charcoal and clay mask has my number. Matte black pouch with a minimally designed label? Yes, please. Face masks are one of my favorite beauty items and even though I have so many, I can't get enough. This one is unlike any other I've used because it's made with raw honey! It's super evident as soon as you rip it open that this is made with sweet sweet honey. As I slathered it on my face I began thinking about how weird my life is. The directions say to leave it on your face for 10-15 minutes (as well as to "take a selfie"... I mean, of course). Some tips from me to you: this may drip a little so make sure you aren't hovering over anything important and I'd suggest wearing a dark tee or something you won't worry about getting some black honey on. Once I had it on for 10 minutes, I ended up using an old washrag with warm water to wipe it off my face and it worked well. My face felt dewy and soft, just like I had hoped! I'd estimate 2 full face masks from this (or more if you're only doing a small area like your nose and cheeks).

Kush Queens Ignite CBD lube

Kush Queens Ignite CBD Intimate Lubricant, 5mg - Listed Retail Value $8.35 (Buy a 30mg bottle for $49.99)

The second offering from Kush Queens is this CBD inclusive intimate lubricant which is going to help you chill while it keeps you slippery. Since it's water-based it cleans up easily and is safe to use with latex or toys (whether you're alone or with a partner). Even though this is listed as a $5.00 value, due to the price of the full-size bottle, I think it's worth more like $8.35. I'm usually not crazy about receiving foil sample packets but I will take this single serving packet to test out something new without a peep!

Note Cosmetics Smokey Eye Pencil in Green other side of Note Cosmetics Smokey Eye Pencil in Green close up of Note Cosmetics Smokey Eye Pencil in Green tip close up of smudge end of Note Cosmetics Smokey Eye Pencil in Green

Note Cosmetics Smokey Eye Pencil in Green - Retail Value $9.99 (linked for $8.99)

Note is another beauty brand I'm not familiar with, but this smokey eye pencil comes with two uses. One end has a deep teal-green pencil for your lids while the other has a foam smudger to make that smokey eye smolder. There are five color variations (black, deep blue, green, copper, or sky blue) and as you can see I got the green, which isn't my favorite. I'm definitely a black eyeliner kinda gal but I certainly find a friend who is more adventurous to pass this to.

Dr. Lip Bang Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm package bacl of Dr. Lip Bang Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm Dr. Lip Bang Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm Dr. Lip Bang Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm with cap off

Dr. Lip Bang Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm in Psycho Punch - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $2.48)

I received this same lip balm in another beauty box late last year but in a different flavor so I know the intense buzz that this delivers all too well. The zine calls this a lip tint which the company does make, but this is just a clear balm so I'm not sure where this went wrong. Kind of a bummer because I'd love to try the tinted version, but I do enjoy this vibrating cinnamon-packed balm that slightly plumps my lips as it buzzes.

Rouse Condoms 3 pack back of Rouse Condoms 3 pack

Rouse Condoms in Plain, 3 ct. - Total Retail Value $2.50 (Buy a 12 pack for $9.99)

It's always nice to receive some safe sex paraphernalia, and this month SlutBox has chosen the brand Rouse which seems like a better fit than the Lelo Hex from last month because Rouse donates over 70% of profits to promote men's health initiatives via the Think Different Foundation. Keep these lubricated latex condoms close when you're getting down with a lover so you can stay safe and clean for more fun in the future.

RealHer Lip Liner in I Love Myself box RealHer Lip Liner in I Love Myself RealHer Lip Liner in I Love Myself with cap off

RealHer Lip Liner in I Love Myself - Retail Value $12.50

I've seen RealHer in other subs in the past so it's a brand I recognize. The positive messages on all of their products make them unique and the formula of this lipliner is smooth and creamy. There were two possible colors and I ended up with "I Love Myself" which is a nice mantra to have and a great reminder while you're getting ready in the morning or for a night out. Bonus for me: this soft nude matches a lot of my favorite lipsticks.

RealHer LGBT Pride Month info RealHer info card

Another bonus! 20% RealHer's profits in the month of June will be donated to The LGBT Center of Orange County. If you wanted to shop more, now's a great time.

Dirty Beauty Reveal Exfoliant back of Dirty Beauty Reveal Exfoliant Dirty Beauty Reveal Exfoliant with lid off

Dirty Beauty Reveal Exfoliant, 1 oz. - Retail Value $12.00

If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times. I love exfoliators. I am loading up on them recently and loving it. This particular one is really neat because it comes as a loose dry powder. The directions say to only use a dime-size but I ended up using maybe three times that to mix with water in my palm and smear all over my face. The oat grain and papaya is really quite soft and not as scratchy as some exfoliators but I could still get some scrub from it. This left me feeling clean and refreshed. It also smells great due to the presence of lavender.

And here are the swatches for the RealHer lip liner and Note eye pencil.

Verdict: The thing I agree with a lot of readers on (while going through spoiler comments) is that for a Pride-themed box, there were no overtly pride-related items. Like others, I was expecting to see something rainbow or declaration of LGBTQ support. Perhaps they figured the booklet covered a lot of ground (which it did). While I think SlutBox is a great value, the products make it seem similar to an average beauty box with just a hint of unique items like condoms, a feather tickler, and CBD products. With the exception of the booklet (which I still think is the best part of this sub), y0u could easily fit 75% of this into any other box that doesn't have a target audience remotely close to SlutBox's. That observation makes me think a little. Is Amber Rose trying to say that people who identify as or are called "sluts" not so different than the people that would never want to be described as one or even want to hear the word uttered? Whether you are scantily clad or totally covered, monogamous or have several partners, open about sex or more private about it- don't we all just want to feel proud, beautiful, and loved? Maybe I'm digging a little too deep here. All in all, I love that SlutBox exists, enjoy the items a lot, and I am gonna keep on subbin' to see what the next month brings!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but sign up today to get the July box! It ships around the first of the month.

Value Breakdown: At $29.99 for this box and an estimated retail value of $160.57, that means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Bath Bomb: $2.43
  • Hangover Pill: $0.93
  • Feather Tickler: $1.40

I for one liked this box better than the first one but I received different glasses and a brown hued eyeliner, both which I love. I cancelled though after the first box thanks to that terrible tee.

I would rock the heck out of those sunglasses! The ones I got were probably the least flattering for my face shape they could be. They droop toward the bottom and make my whole face looke weird. Sad too because the sunglasses were half the reason I subbed. The other half was I figured “Pride” would have some cool pride themed stuff in it. I was not impressed.

I reaaaally want to like this box, because I’m into the message, but so far, the box is okay but not over the top good. I’m giving it another month.

And I’m gonna be that gal – it’s “segue” not “segway”. Unless of course you’re into riding two-wheeled motorized vehicles in the bedroom, in that case you do you. 😛

Mine was missing the sunglasses.

I really hate when a box review is fluffed with tons of photo’s. Not much in that box for the money.

Reply ButtonReply

Mary K

I am uninterested in booklet pix on any review & scroll quickly through them, but I don’t think it was compensating for lack of items. This box looks pretty full to me. (Those sunglasses are ridiculous though.) 🤣

Jess

This is the worst box ever. Sunglasses and stupid feather. Wth is slutty about any of that. I like a beauty item or whatever by this box is super disappointing and the biggest waste of money ever. I hate it. I bought a 3 month sub so whatever I have one more and we’ll see. Last month was ok. This month sucks…and for
$30???

Helen

Oh my goodness those sunglasses are hilarious. I love big sunglasses but not those. I can’t imagine them being flattering on any shape of human face. Hopefully I am wrong and someone out there will rock them.

Reply ButtonReply

Holly

I received my box the other day and I was very disappointed. The only items I kept were the sunglasses and the tickler (which my daughter is using as a toy for her dolls).

I agree with everyone that the box should have been more pride focused. The magazine was great but they fell short with their product selections.

As for the EZ hangover pill, I did not feel comfortable using it. If you look closely at the photo, they stapled the leaflet onto the packaging so the pill was no longer vacuum sealed. I know it’s not a prescription medication. But with it being something I am ingesting, I would have appreciated if they took a better approach instead of just stapling the leaflet into the vacuum sealed package.

Misti

so does this box come exposed for the whole world to see Slutbox . like an announcement Slut box so my neighbors and mail man see it or is it more private ?

Reply ButtonReply

Thanks for the question, Misti. Confirmed that this does come loud and proud without any coverage. I will add that to the review to clarify since I know it’s a big deal breaker for people.

Yep. I got a neon pink box that says slutbox in big white letters right on my front doorstep lol. I personally don’t care but i would be nice if it was covered.

I mean I get empowerment and trust I’m all for it but ya know maybe it’s not cool if my 8 year old grabs the mail

Marisa

The CBD oil in those products are from hemp and not cannabis, there’s a little bit of a difference, most importantly cannabis CBD wouldn’t be legal to distribute like that. It looks like cannabis essential oil is included but that’s different.

Oh gosh, thanks for pointing that out Marisa! I didn’t realize there was a difference. I’ve edited that part of my review to clarify. 🙂

Last month was better this month was boring!!

Jackie

I said this before, but I think it bears repeating. This should not be a sub box, they should be making the magazine and publishing it instead. The last 2 boxes that has been consistently the biggest draw for people. They are putting a lot of effort into the booklet that goes into the box, but not the same level of curation into the box.

It really is a shame.

TheOtherJulia

Agreed. I think the magazine is the best thing about the box.

Yes!

Jill

Thanks for the review–I agree with the other posters that it was underwhelming and not overly Pride-related. They should have included this product (a brand I’ve seen in sub boxes before), which I got a Pride-related e-mail about: https://www.milkmakeup.com/glitter-stick.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwgYPZBRBoEiwA2XeupU2Omn7KpiQTCzXdfbusdQ7UlzMN8dShWTr9d5FfOF0U2ogKgASOAhoCdtgQAvD_BwE

That such a great suggestion! Would have made the box so much more relevant and goes towards a good cause.

I really like the idea of this box, but I’m still not sold. I would love to get a copy of the ‘zine because it looks like really great information. I am curious why it’s not more pride related, considering the overall theme of the box. I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with in the future. I won’t be subscribing yet, but I will keep watching, waiting, and reading your reviews. Thanks Marne!

Carey

Great review as always Marne! You do the “difficult” boxes very well in my opinion. 🙂

I think it’s an OK box. It’s a little different and it seems a bit better than the last box. Perhaps she is just getting into her groove? Quite a few boxes flounder here and there with a vision and actual implementation so here’s hoping it keeps getting better.

As a side note, I would totally love to have the booklets from this box. I have to confess I am not into the current terminology and I would love to read about going to a drag show and the etiquette! ( i really wanna take the drive down to Key West and I hear they have the BEST shows )

Keep the reviews coming MSA.

Ah crap! Thanks so much for catching that, Angelina! Even when it’s in front of me, I can miss things. I went back to the link I posted and saw that it’s actually a 4 oz size for $15.00 which makes the 1 oz only worth about $3.75. I’ve updated all of the values affected.

Thank you for doing the math! I was wrong too lol. So why does the magazine have it listed for the wrong value?
