May 2018 Parasol Co Essentials Trial Review
We previously reviewed Parasol Co's diapers and loved them, and learned that they've made some big changes since January. Their designs have changed, the diapers themselves have gotten an upgrade, and they've introduced a number of new products, too. Luckily they introduced this new trial kit so you can try them all out!
Parasol HI Diapers, Size 1 (20 per pack)
Parasol has two new diaper products now: the HI line which is for standard diapering and most similar to their previous diapers, and the LIVE line of diaper pants (which are more like pull-ups). We are potty training with my 3-year-old now and we didn't want to disrupt everything by introducing diaper pants, so I chose to review the regular diapers here.
These are made from sustainable wood pulp and are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, latex-free, and chlorine-free.
Pictured are Size 1, which come 20 to a pack. (I separately received a pack of size 6 to test with my son, but I'm also pregnant with our second so these are going to come in handy in a few months!)
They've introduced two new gender-neutral designs here in the "Limitless Sky" collection: birds, and monstera leaves! I love the plant design so much and I really appreciate that these feel more modern and different than other "design-y" diapers on the market.
Plus: these diapers are SO SOFT. My husband even keeps talking about how nice they are! They feel much more like fabric than Honest Co and Target Up & Up brand diapers, which are very paper-y by comparison. This version even seems to be softer than the ones I previously reviewed, which is seriously impressive.
These are also made to be used both during the day and overnight– no separate overnight diapers needed. We have occasionally had some leaking overnight, but my son is a very heavy sleeper and nighttime pee-er, so we've had that problem with literally all brands. These perform better than Target Up & Up Overnight diapers, which I had been using most recently.
Everything has gotten an upgrade since my last review, including the side tabs. The old ones worked fine and although these actually seem smaller, they're very secure. I believe the back of these new diapers also has more stretch than the previous ones, which has been great with my super active toddler. Overall, they fit him extremely well and seem to breathe well in this springtime heat wave we've been having.
Parasol YAS! Overnight Pads and Regular Pads (2 each per package)
This is one of Parasol's newer products.
As mentioned, I am pregnant currently, so I haven't road tested these in situ. Visually, they are pretty similar to other feminine pads I've used, but the absorbent surface most definitely feels softer. They have wings and a long and wide strip of adhesive too, so they seem like they'd be secure. While they do come packaged two per outer bag, each pad is wrapped in its own fabric-y wrapper inside.
It looks like these are only available in subscription form in a big combo pack that contains 72 Panty Liners, 60 Regular Pads, 40 Overnight Pads, and 50 Femme Wipes for $50 per delivery (every 4, 8, or 12 weeks). I use a menstrual cup so I'm not super familiar offhand with how much pads usually cost, but this seems like a TON of product, way more than one woman would normally go through in a month. I could see that pack being convenient for postpartum needs, or perhaps if you have multiple young girls in your household or just like to keep stocked up.
Parasol Wind Wipes
There are two different types of wipes in this trial, and it took me way too long to figure out which one was which! These are all-purpose wipes and are free of additives, alcohol, chlorine, dyes, fragrances, lotions, phthalates, parabens, and preservatives.
They are meant to be used on skin and for easy cleanup of toys and other surfaces. I find them perfect for wiping down my son's face after lunch, or wiping his hands after he's been playing in the dirt all afternoon.
Parasol Woke Wipes
These wipes, by comparison, are labeled as baby wipes. Although the ingredients are identical. 🤔
The only appreciable difference between the two is that Woke (the baby wipes) are thicker than Wind (the all-purpose wipes). And I can say from my own confusion between the two that Wind wipes are not appropriate for messy diapers.
In general, I like that these are fragrance-free and mostly water-based. But I find that I preferred the previous style of Parasol wipes better for tough clean-ups. If you're already using Water Wipes, these might be worth trying as an alternative (both brands are about $0.06 per wipe).
The Wind wipes are a bit cheaper since they are thinner ($40 for 800 vs baby wipes at $45 for 800), but I can't see myself purchasing both since they're almost identical– I'd opt for the slightly more expensive baby wipes and just use them as all-purpose, too.
Parasol Obsessed Feminine Wipes
Wipes aren't normally part of my personal care routine; I don't have much to compare these too. But it's hot here and we've been spending a lot of time outside, so I've been using these more than expected to freshen up a bit during bathroom breaks.
These are unscented and free of the same list of additives and chemicals as the baby wipes. These also claim to be flushable/bio-degradable (although since my home and plumbing are old and can be problematic, I personally don't risk the flush). I could definitely see myself throwing a pack of these in my bag when I know we're going to be out in the summer heat all day!
Parasol vs Honest Co
I had originally compared Parasol to Honest Co, which is the biggest name in diaper subscription products (outside of subscribing via Target or Amazon). Both companies are eco-friendly and offer high-quality products, but there are some big differences:
- Subscribe to only what you need vs add-on products. Honest Company's diaper subscription you get both diapers and wipes in every delivery, and you can add personal care and cleaning products to your bundles at a discount. Parasol's products are all subscription, so you'll subscribe to each product that you want to receive and set a frequency for it.
- Choose when to get wipes. Since Parasol's diapers and wipes are separate subscriptions, that means you have more control. With a toddler, we were accumulating a lot of extra wipes every month when we subscribed to Honest Company, so having the ability to pick and choose when to get wipes with Parasol was a big win.
- No separate night time diapers. Parasol says their diapers are suitable for both daytime and nighttime use, whereas Honest Company has a separate product for overnight.
Verdict: I really do love the quality of Parasol's diapers, and I can't believe they are honestly even nicer than the last batch I reviewed. Value wise, these are definitely a more expensive diaper but are overall in line with similar eco-friendly brands. For the diapers subscription, Parasol will run you about $0.35/diaper for Newborn size and $0.65/diaper for size 5/ 6, which almost spot on to The Honest Co's non-subscription prices. (With bundles, the Honest prices are cheaper, but I do think Parasol's diapers are a nicer product– so the price difference may be worth it.)
For the baby wipes, Parasol's are 800 for $45 (or about $0.056 per wipe). This is about 1 cent cheaper per wipe than the Honest Co wipes 4-pack (288 wipes for $18.95), although I suspect the Parasol wipes may be a bit smaller.
The other additions to their line up have been great to try, too. I surprised myself by liking the feminine wipes as much as I did, but I still find having two different types of baby wipes to be a bit of a head-scratcher.
