The Holo Hookup June 2018 "Carribean Drinks" Review
Just a heads up, this subscription does not come with an info sheet. All of the value estimates are from what a different holographic polish from the brand would cost. Also, holographic polishes are notoriously difficult to photograph. I did my best, but I promise you that all of the polishes look even better in person:
Cupcake Polish in Sangria in St. Thomas, 15 mL – Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here).
Purple is my favorite color, so I am all about this purple holo with iridescent glitter. As is usual, the formula on this baby was smooth and easy. Now the real question: where can I find a drink this color?
Different Dimension in Midori Sours in Montserrat, Don’t Care, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here)
This highlighter chartreuse green polish is BRIGHT. Like, so bright I am surprised this doesn’t glow in the dark. This is a linear holo with added shimmer, but to be honest the holo plays second fiddle to how bright this polish is. I am not complaining, as this is so fun and perfect for summer. Different Dimension is usually my favorite polish of the month, and this is no exception. The formula is smooth like butter.
Glisten & Glow in Mai Tais in Martinique, 15 mL – Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here).
This is a vividly bright pink linear holo that likes change colors depending on the way the sun hits it. It will go from regular pink to bright, in your face Barbie pink depending on what the time of day is and if you’re inside or outside. This formula started to pull when I applied a second coat, so make sure when you’re using it that each layer has some extra time to dry.
Top Shelf Lacquer in Bahama Blues Cocktail, 15 mL – Estimated Value $10 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Top Shelf Lacquer here).
This is a blue holo in a jelly base, which means you need at least three coats for full opacity or you need a base coat of blue polish. Because the need for multiple coats, this is another polish that you need to be careful about pulling when you go in for the second coat.
Here are the swatches.
Here is the nail art I did this month. I really wanted to play with how bright and fun these colors are, so I was drawn into a color block look. Let me know what you think below!
Verdict: As I mentioned in previous reviews, The Holo Hookup is the only place where you can currently get four different polishes from the four featured brands. If you are used to only the polishes from Ulta or Sallys, you may think the $44 cost of the box is high. I disagree. I only had to pay for one shipping cost instead of four, and I got four exclusive nail polish shades. Another thing to note is that holographic polishes are pretty uncommon in the mainstream polish world, and some brands will even charge more for their holographic polishes (I am looking at you, OPI DS collection). In terms of how long the color will last, I top all of my nails with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and I have never had an issue with my holo polishes chipping. Overall, I loved the bright and fun colors that this month had to offer, and I am excited for July!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out. Check back here for when the July box goes on sale.
Value Breakdown: I got four polishes for $44, which means each polish cost $11. Considering the estimated value for three of the four polishes is higher than that, and if I were to purchase a polish from each brand individually I would have four shipping costs, I really think this is a good deal for what you get!
