Trash Club by Divine Trash Vintage July 2018 Review
I am SO excited every time I see this black envelope arrive!!! I can't wait to show this month's look off to you all, but first! Let me introduce folks who aren't familiar with the Trash Club to how everything works around these parts.
The Divine Trash Vintage "Trash Club" is a vintage clothing and accessories subscription that curates a new look (or sometimes a few simpler pieces) for you every month based on your size and preferences. When you sign up, you'll complete their survey, where you'll share things like your sizing, height, weight, and gender identity, and your personal style. I really love this little widget they have where you're shown laydowns (like Polyvore boards) of different outfits, and you click to remove ones that don't fit your style. You can also share Pinterest boards and write in any other thoughts you might have. Divine Trash also sends an email shortly after each order arrives, asking for feedback to help them better narrow down your vibe.
I recently revised my style profile to reflect my summer style. I'm generally a neutral gal, but with the brighter days and festive, party-filled season, my style is starting to brighten up a bit. I still like more modern silhouettes (whether that means classic shapes or more unconventional silhouettes, like cocoon jackets or voluminous skirts and dresses), but I've been really inspired by the rise of retro 70s color palettes and patterns this summer. While I'm likely to remain a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal heading out the door each day, I'd totally break from my neutral routine for nights eating and drinking al fresco with friends or partying it up at summer BBQs. Plus, I was just kind of eager to see what the Divine Trash folks came up with when given a more era-specific, retro prompt. (I believe I said something along the lines of "What Cher would wear on the weekends.") If I really let these vintage professionals loose, what treasures would they come up with?
One of my favorite parts about this subscription is the little handwritten note they include on the garment's hang tag. If you can't tell by this month's note, I feel like me and the Divine Trash team are becoming fast friends, haha! I love knowing that they really do read all of the details in my feedback/style profile and that they take the time to write out a quick note each month about why they thought the item in question was perfect for me. So sweet. So rad. I love it.
Oh, and yes, that is someone's name written on the inside of my new garment. Was this an old person's dress? Probably. That's the nature of vintage, after all. I definitely know some folks who would be weirded out by that kind of thing. As for me, eh, I don't mind. Obviously, I. Brown had amazing taste, and I can only hope they enjoyed wearing this look just as much as I will! Sure I like vintage for the style and the uniqueness, but on a sentimental note, I think it's just really cool knowing this item has had a whole life before me, and that I get to keep flaunting it and keeping its story going is a pretty neat thing!
And I mean, LOOK. AT. THIS. DRESS. How amazing is it?! I feel like a Golden Girl 20 years before the show began. I feel like I'm the host of a groovy Palm Springs BBQ. I feel like I'm on my way to Mick and Bianca's wedding.
The secret of this groovy little number is the elastic strap inside the dress itself. On either side of the waistline (again, on the INSIDE of the dress), there are tabs, one with a hook, the other with an eye. I THINK these guys are meant to fasten behind my back so that the dress goes from this:
... to THIS:
Honestly, I can't decide which way I prefer. When the doohickeys are fastened, it makes for a much more "tailored" look from the front, and almost gives the impression that the back of the dress is a cape of some sort. But I've gotta say that when the straps are undone, the dress becomes this flowy muu-muu that I kind of dig.
It's basically the most comfortable thing I've put on my body in a long time. I can't find a materials tag on it anywhere, but it feels like a breezy, soft cotton weave.
And can we talk about that color combo? Had it just been lime green and purple, I feel like it would've looked... cool. But add that bright sea-foam green in there and all of a sudden, this dress feels a lot more unexpected. A lot more... dare I say it... fashion-y.
The Verdict: Let's get one thing out of the way real quick. While I have gotten some awesome "minimalist" items from Divine Trash Vintage, their wheelhouse is most definitely in the quirkier, oh-my-goodness-what-is-THAT end of the vintage spectrum. So, less vintage versions of current trend pieces, and more blatantly vintage head-turners ready for you to make them your own. I'll also say that yes, the subscription does have you spend $30.00 on a single vintage item, and yes, sometimes you can find similar pieces that are just as amazing for a quarter of that at your local thrift shop. Personally, the time I have to treasure hunt around my local thrift store circuit has shrunk quite a bit (adulting, am I right?), and as someone who's not all that small (short maybe, but not small dress-size wise), thrifting usually results in me finding few if any wow-worthy items that will actually fit me. With this subscription, I can still get my vintage fashion fix without having to kill an afternoon driving around town, PLUS I've not ONCE been disappointed by the fit. They find SUCH flattering pieces for me, I can't even believe it. So for me, paying the premium is worth it.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You can definitely subscribe, but what you get will be super unique, both because it's vintage and because it's picked specifically for your tastes! According to Divine Trash, Trash Club packages will ship within a week of your charge.
Value Breakdown: This box cost $30.00 with free US shipping, meaning this dress must be worth at least $30.00.
