Summer 2018 Vegan Cuts Makeup Box Review
Here's the info card for the box with the product list on the back.
Au Naturale Cosmetics Su/Stain Matte Lip Stain in On Pointe, 0.13 oz. - Retail Value $25.00
This neutral-hued liquid lipstick includes organic raspberry oil, which gives it a fruity fragrance out of the bottle. The formula also has things like castor oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, and cocoa seed butter which make it more nourishing than other lipsticks I've tried. So many stains I try end up feeling super matte and drying on my lips, but this version is soft and cushy (and makes my lips feel the same). It sounds weird but the color has a grayish tone that looks a little cold against my skin tone, but it definitely has that modern ultra-muted vibe that's in right now. (Stay tuned for a swatch!)
Honeybee Gardens Effortless Eyeliner, 0.04 oz. - Retail Value $8.99, Listed Value $9.00
Who doesn't love black eyeliner? This blend is nice and creamy, so it slides on and blends beautifully. I will say that it didn't have a ton of staying power—I lined my top lid, but it wasn't too long before it started creeping down around the corners of my eye/stamping itself onto my lower lash line. Still, it's great to have in a pinch. And I definitely feel better using a more natural product around my sensitive eyes.
Here's a swatch of the lip product and the eyeliner!
Pacifica Stunning Brows Eyebrow Gloss & Set, 0.27 fl. oz. - Retail Value $14.00
This clear gel helps keep brows in place while adding an eye-catching hint of shine. I'm not as concerned about the shininess, haha, but my wily brows certainly appreciate something that keeps them in line. The formula includes kelp oil (which I totally didn't expect), coconut oil, vitamin B, and sunflower oil to help keep brows healthy and nourished. The package says that this product gives brows a thickened appearance, but I didn't experience that so much. They do offer a brown-tinted version that might have more of that effect, but the clear one I got was mostly about keeping things in place.
Derma-E Essentials Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30, 0.14 oz. - Retail Value $21.95, Listed Value $22.00 (found here for $17.56)
I was surprised that this powder actually has SPF 30 levels of protection. The powder has a light beige color in the container but it comes out translucent. My skin is super pale, so it wasn't even worth a swatch. But I do wonder whether it would look somewhat dingy against deep skin tones. The other concern I have is that the design of the applicator has the powder coming out through the brush. But I was having trouble more than a teeny tiny amount of powder out at any given time. You can unscrew the powder from the base of the brush and use it that way, it's just a little more clumsy.
Bonus: Sarah Jean Three Piece Eyelash Kit - Retail Value $57.00, Listed Value $55.00 (found here for $55.00)
The final "item" on the product list is actually three pieces!
This kit comes from a PETA-certified Australian brand called Sarah Jean. I don't use false lashes very often, but I have some summer weddings coming up that could warrant some extra glam!
First up are the lashes, which are lightweight and vegan. I like how full and feathered out they are!
Next is a tube of waterproof eyelash adhesive. The adhesive is white but dries clear. I like the sleek packaging, but I was surprised by its strong chemical glue smell.
This is the product I'm MOST excited about being included in this kit! These tweezers have a curvature that follows the shape of my lashes so that I can more easily place and nudge the false lashes around.
Verdict: This was my first Vegan Cuts Makeup Box, and I'm very impressed! I have a low-key approach to makeup—I go for minimal makeup with a pop of color here or there—and the items in this collection were all great for creating a put-together but not obviously "done" look. I do wonder whether the shades that did appear in this box were universal enough for other skin tones (as mentioned, my skin is super light)—if you've given them a try, please let me know what you think! I'd love to get more perspectives 🙂
