May 2018 #childishgambino VNYL Review

It comes with a handwritten note from your personal curator to give some thought and detail behind the selections.

Instead of the theme sticker - we got a VNYL sticker this month.

Childish Gambino - "Awaken My Love!"

Let's start with my reason for picking the theme - the 2016 album from Childish Gambino!

You can expect normal vinyl for the most part - no real exclusive gatefolds or anything like that - but as you'll see a little further down, you'll get an exclusive color vinyl from time to time.

I've listened to some older Childish Gambino albums, but couldn't really get into them - until this album - it just bangs right out of the gate. Me and Your Mama really sets you up nicely for what you can expect. and songs like Redbone, the single, just keep that laid-back/old-school tone going - it's really a beautiful album. I highly recommend giving this a spin if all you know from him is This Is America!

Superheaven - Ours Is Chrome

What a major surprise this month - this album was giving me at sorts or 90's rock vibes.

I got a limited edition pink pressing of the album.

It even included a foldout poster in the gatefold.

This album is so super-90's-alternative-rock. They're mentioned as "grunge revivalists" - while I don't really see it as grunge, I totally hear a bunch of my favorite bands from the 90's all mixed in - Next To Nothing sounds just like a Pinback song, while Room almost sounds like an old Silverchair song - remember them?. If you miss that era of rock - give this a shot.

Sugar Candy Mountain - Do Right

The final album of the month comes from the California band Sugar Candy Mountain.

This one is on a VNYL-exclusive translucent pressing!

This one gets more into the psychedelic pop/rock - right off the bat, it's got some Tame Impala vibes - soothing and relaxing from front to back.

Verdict: This is the first time that I've selected an artist-specific vibe - so I wasn't sure what to expect. I liked getting one record that I knew of, while still be surprised by two more picks from different genres - in the end, it added up to a major win for me - all 3 albums!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This subscription is customized to your music preferences. While you may select the same 'vibe' as me, you likely won't receive the same three albums as I do.

hello, thanks for the review. I signed up but don’t believe that these boxes are genuinely curated to your tastes. I watched a lot of reviews and the same albums keep popping up. So whereas your box should be Childish Gambino and two others based on your taste – those same vinyl seem to appear frequently in other boxes. I read a review that basically said that the shoehorn their albums into your taste. As I said I will certainly let you know after my first box.
