Bokksu July 2018 Review

First, you'll see a thank you note from founder Danny Taing.

front of bokksu citrus refresh booklet

The snack theme this month is  "Citrus Refresh". They did a citrus theme in June of last year but I'm happy to report that none of the snacks are the same (except the tea). Awesome!

On these pages, you'll get a rundown of the different citrus fruits included and a map of where the snacks come from.

Nakajima Taishodo Orange Stick Cakes Nakajima Taishodo Orange Stick Cake on plate

Nakajima Taishodo Orange Stick Cake x2

First of all, I love that this package says "Cute Selection". Now that that is out of the way, let's talk about the serious moist stick cake with a bold orange flavor. It's really tasty! I'm so impressed when a baked good stays spongy, especially all the way from Japan. The orange slices on the top make for a gorgeous presentation as well.

Meiji Rich Orange Biscuits x2

Each package comes with two of these cookies. These are soooo interesting and unlike anything I've had before. It's a bit like the cookie version of one of those chocolate oranges. The chocolate biscuits sandwich zesty orange cream in between one another for a really unique snack.

Nakajima Taishodo Lemon Low Carb Cakes Nakajima Taishodo Lemon Low Carb Cake on plate

Lemon Low Carb Cake x2

Mmm - another stick cake but in lemon flavor and a little less fancy than the orange one. This is terrific and tastes like a really saturated lemon pound cake. There is some orange in there as well. Using almond flour is what makes this a lower carb snack and there's no way I'd be able to tell!

Daimonji Ame Honpo Yuzu Candy Daimonji Ame Honpo Yuzu Candy on plate

Daimonji Ame Honpo Yuzu Candy

Another beautiful treat is this yuzu hard candy. It looks like colored glass but I assure you it's safe to eat! Think of these like a fancier jolly rancher. The flavor of the yuzu is really subtle but oh so yummy. You can see flecks of real fruit in the candy and it has a slight grapefruit and lemon flavor. I love that these come in a resealable bag so I can slowly ration them out. These are somehow refreshing as well!

Amanoya Mini Fried Rice Cracker Shiquasa Salt Amanoya Mini Fried Rice Cracker Shiquasa Salt on plate

Amanoya Mini Fried Rice Cracker Shiquasa Salt x2

Shiquasa is a citrus fruit native to Okinawa and is also known as a "flat lemon". These rice crackers are savory but are coated in soy sauce and shiquasa salt for a really lovely flavor! Think of how a salty lime tortilla chip tastes and that will conjure up a similar flavor. Really addictive!

tokyo rusk lemon rusks tokyo rusk lemon rusk on plate

Tokyo Rusk Lemon Rusk x2

Yesssss! Bokksu has turned me on to rusks and they're one of the things I look forward to the most. This lemon-shaped baguette slice has been dipped in a lemon butter paste before being baked for a second time and is then sprinkled with sugar. Apparently, this is also a brand new flavor from Tokyo Rusk. YUM!

Ace Bakery Hyuganatsu Jellies Ace Bakery Hyuganatsu Jelly on plate

Ace Bakery Hyuganatsu Jelly x3

This seems to be a different item for Bokksu as I don't recall ever getting any jellies. Hyuganatsu fruit is native to the Miyazaki Prefecture and the info booklet describes it as a cross between a lemon and a pomelo that is sweet with a hint of tartness. I received three of these wobbly jellies and although they're fun to eat, tasted a little too perfumey for me.

Kingodo Seika Olive Oil Senbei Yuzu Pepper Kingodo Seika Olive Oil Senbei Yuzu Pepper on plate

Kingodo Seika Olive Oil Senbei Yuzu Pepper

My other favorite Japanese snack: senbei! This one is flavored with yuzu pepper, what a delight! So salty and tangy with a hint of citrus - these crunchy snacks are probably one of my favorites this month! If the box only came with these and the rusks, I'd be a happy camper.

OFU lemon salt flavorSmoked crackers and peanuts OFU lemon salt flavorSmoked crackers and peanuts

OFU Lemon Salt Flavor Smoked Crackers and Peanuts

As you can tell by the package, this snack is perfect for eating with a nice cold beer. The round cracker balls are so smoky in flavor that I'm actually having a hard time tasting any lemon. I thought I would love these, but I don't as much as I'd like. I wish the smokiness was toned down to let the lemon salt flavor take lead.

Kagoshima Seicha Yuzu Green Tea packets Kagoshima Seicha Yuzu Green Tea bag

Kagoshima Seicha Yuzu Green Tea Bags x3

The final treat is the tea of the month. Like I mentioned, this tea was featured in their citrus box last summer as well. While I'm more of a coffee drinker than a tea drinker so I don't always pick up on subtleties, this green tea is said to have gentle citrus notes alongside its earthy flavor. I can't pick it up, but darn if it doesn't look lush and gorgeous in my clear mug!

Verdict: Once again, I quite liked this month's Bokksu! Citrus is a wonderful theme since there are so many fruits in Japan that we don't have here. I loved trying the sweet and savory treats alike but will stay true to my love of senbei and rusks! This time I received 9 different snacks and a tea that totaled 20 items.

This was a very tasty box of snacks. I love citrus so it was especially refreshing. My favorite was the hard candy. I will have to order more from the Bokksu website. Because these snacks have such subtle flavoring they are to be eaten slowly to savor every subtle nuance.
