July 2018 Box Review
This subscription is absolutely the most popular box in our house right now!
Pley recommends Hot Wheels Challenge Accepted for kids 5-11 years old, but with parent supervision, it's appropriate for younger kids too. My son is three and his love of cars and trucks has grown into a real infatuation with Hot Wheels cars– we've collected a bunch and he still loves to get new ones. He even has a collection of about 12 favorites at any given time that he likes to take with him when we leave the house. 🙂
I should mention that this box mainly contains Track Builder system parts, which are geared toward ages 6-12 according to Mattel.
Each box includes a mini-magazine that has some fun track ideas as well as some games and other activities you can play. The featured early-edition car this month is Hover & Out!
The magazine has guidelines for using your box to help build out obstacles for your track, plus a lot more. (I actually couldn't replicate this exactly this month, maybe the flame pieces were from a previous box? Cardboard stuff doesn't last long in our house.)
There are also lots of other activities in the book. Since it's summertime, it's hard to get my son to sit still for long enough to actually do these 😉
Each box also has a full spread mini-poster of the featured car!
Exclusive Hot Wheels Challenge Accepted T-shirt – Estimated Value $15
Every box also includes a kids' t-shirt (you'll select the size when you sign up). We use ours as sleep shirts because they're too big for my toddler, but he still gets very excited about every new shirt.
Each shirt features the early edition car that comes in that specific box, so this one is all about Hover & Out. It's almost as cool as the actual car:
Hot Wheels 2018 Hover & Out – MSRP $1.99 (Available here for $8.65)
We all thought this car was pretty cool when we opened this box for the first time! It's long and kind of skinny, which makes it great on the track.
I think my son really likes this one because it looks *nothing* like any of the other cars in his collection.
Pretty spiffy, right?
We got two other cars in this box:
Hot Wheels '55 Corvette – MSRP $1.99 (Couldn't find this one online)
This is a first: we actually already have this exact car!
No worries though, because this is a totally classic design.
Hot Wheels '69 Dodge Charger 500 – MSRP $1.99 (Couldn't find this exact car online)
We also loved this classic muscle car!
I'm still amazed at the detail that goes into these things.
Enough of the car show– time for the big reveal this month!
Hot Wheels Loop Launcher Set – Listed Value $9.99
I was confused about this at first because we just received a loop in the last box. And honestly: It's given us a lot of grief! Some cars just do not cooperate well with loops. (This has given us a great chance to talk about physics and having patience and trying again, though.)
This kit includes another loop (slightly bigger than the last one), plus a launcher to help the cars gain speed to actually get through the loop.
It is operated with a rubber band mechanism similar to the turn kicker we received a few months ago, and good news:
The launcher works great! My son was so happy to see cars that normally wouldn't go through the old loop tackle this one with no problem at all.
This Track Builder extension also includes one last car:
It's a pretty basic model, but my son's favorite color is red, so he's pretty happy with the cool tinted windows in this one. Long story short: we loved combining these new pieces and cars with our existing track set and shooting cars all over the living room. 🙂
Verdict: I can't believe this is only our fourth Hot Wheels Challenge Accepted Box! My son's excitement about this box has only continued to grow over time. He loves checking out the new cars, and I love the quality time we have building and playing with the new track pieces. As a parent, I do not have time to research the latest-and-greatest developments in the toy world, so I think of it as a guarantee that we get something every two months that will be a fun activity for hours and hours to come.
I've mentioned this before, but I think we especially like this box since we're still building out Hot Wheels collection. (If your kids are already super into Hot Wheels and have a ton of accessories and track parts, it may less exciting for them.)
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? From Pley:
Cutoff's are the 7th of the month following a release month (boxes are released every 2 months: February, April, June, August, October and December) You must signup BEFORE the 5th of the following month a box is released in order to get the current box. Signups from the 5th and on will receive the next box to be released.
For example, signup before March 5th to receive February's box. Signup from March 7th and on to receive April's box.

Value Breakdown: I always have a hard time with the value for this box! The prices for the components are hard to reliably track down online. For example, even though prices for individually Hot Wheels cars vary wildly, they're generally $1.99 in stores. In this case, my best estimate has me coming out about even with the $24.99/month + $5 shipping price tag of the box.
I do feel that for the price, this is an affordable box that for us has paid dividends in the family time we spend together (and frankly just how happy it makes my son!). And I love that I don't have to go to the toy store or bring my son into the toy aisle at Target to keep building our collection.
