LiveGlam ShadowMe "Marbled L.A." Review
I'm so excited about this subscription! I tend to have an understated approach to makeup day to day, but when I do go for a look, I go for it. And eyeshadow is the primary way I play with makeup.
The first thing I noticed about this subscription was the presentation. Unboxing this makeup felt like opening one of those fancy makeup-store gift sets. It's so much chicer than just a palette tossed in a bubble mailer.
As you can see, I got a lippie with my set! You can get one in your first set, too—just follow this link!
This month's palette is called "Marbled L.A." It's packaged inside a matching cardboard sleeve.
And here are the colors! (I'll swatch them in a moment for ya.) Okay, first impressions. The hues are a little warmer than the typical colors I tend to choose for myself. If you look hard enough, I have some olive tones to my skin, but I'm generally a winter (to get retro about it, hehe) with dark, brown-black hair and icy blue eyes. In other words, I usually look to likewise cool tones in my makeup—think mushroomy-gray neutrals, blues, lilacs, and the blackest eyeliner I can find.
That said, I do LOVE gold eyeshadow. It's just so much fun and gives me instant party vibes. And I appreciate how this palette is a mix of matte and shimmery shades. I'm excited to see how they look on me!
The bonus lippie I got is a pale lilac-pink shade called "Kiss-a-Latte". It's matte and feels very LA-90s-revival.
UPDATE: This is a redo of the original swatch pic we took. We decided to retake the photo to make sure you can see all of the colors at their boldest. Note that I had to give a few sweeps of most of the matte colors (except for the sandy orange "Venice Beach" shadow, which I found to be extra bold right off the bat) to get these opaque swatches, but both shimmery shades were super pigmented the second they hit my skin.
Starting at my wrist, you're seeing...
- Kiss-a-Latte Lippie
- Beverly Hills Matte Eyeshadow
- Hollywood Shimmery Eyeshadow
- City of Angels Shimmery Eyeshadow
- Santa Monica Matte Eyeshadow
- Venice Beach Matte Eyeshadow
- Malibu Matte Eyeshadow (I know it looks like nothing is there—this ivory shade is just super translucent on me!)
The ShadowMe info card has a dramatic look on the front that seems to use almost every shade at once. That's a little more involved than my style warrants, but I still wanted to experiment with my new palette! So I ended up trying two looks, each using half the shades in the set.
This first one uses the top row of matte shadows—Malibu (the translucent ivory shade), Venice Beach (a toasty, toffee color), and Santa Monica (terracotta). I started by patting Venice Beach all over my lid. I was actually surprised by the richness of this sandy color. It didn't take much effort to get a lot of smooth, even coverage.
Then I added a bit of Santa Monica, which is slightly deeper and redder than Venice Beach, into my crease and along my bottom lashes. The color is darker, but I didn't find this shade to be as pigmented as the one before it. That actually worked well for my needs—I have pretty big eyes, so I tend to blend my crease color up a little higher towards my eyebrow, so that you can see it/it forms a gentle arc over my open eyes (rather than following my actual crease, which basically disappears when my eyes are open). Because Santa Monica isn't super pigmented, it let me add dimension without having to worry about accidentally looking super overdone.
And finally, I used Malibu on my brow bone and the inner corner of my eye to help wake up the look. It's not the boldest color, but it was great for blending/toning down the edges of the darker hues.
Next up, GOLD! I'm in love with this gold shadow, which is aptly named Hollywood. Honestly, Hollywood could be a look all by itself (okay, maybe with a little black mascara for good measure...). It's extremely rich and pigmented and so beautifully reflective. I gleefully dabbed it all over my lid and up into where I typically fill in my crease.
Beverly Hills, a matte eggplant color in the palette, would've made a perfect crease color, but I was so giddy over the sheet of gold stretching up to my brow bone that I decide to leave it uninterrupted. Instead, I patted Beverly Hills in the outer corners of my eyes and down along (and just under) the outer 2/3 of my lower lashes for a smokier effect. Like Santa Monica, it didn't have quite as much pigment power as I expected from such a dark color. But that made it a little easier to gently build up atop the edges of my gold shadow.
To finish up, I used City of Angels, which is the shimmering silver color, as a highlight. When I'm doing something glitzy, I like to let my highlight spill down onto my lower lashline. It all feels rather disco to me, which I LOVE. Inspired by the image on the info card, I also used a touch of City of Angels as a highlight on my cheekbones. I kept it subtle, but I did like catching the little twinkles dancing along my cheeks!
Here's the same look with my Kiss-a-Latte lippie added to the mix. This isn't my favorite color, tbh. It ended up looking pinker than I thought it might coming out of the tube, but it might be just a bit too pale for my tastes. The formula has a TON of staying power, though! I'm always impressed by how long these liquid lipsticks hold.
The Verdict: I was really impressed with this ShadowMe palette! The colors are fun on their own but also complement each other beautifully. I thought it was interesting that the mid-range shades were the most-pigmented of the bunch, with the darker shades being colorful but not as rich as I expected. It actually ended up being a good thing, in my case. Sometimes I have trouble scaling back darker colors if I don't perfectly place them right away—these darker shades were rich enough that I could easily blend/build them. If you're a more experienced makeup aficionado, I could see just wanting great rich pigments all around. But for someone more on the novice/amateur end of the spectrum, I found the palette fun and "user-friendly" for lack of a better term!
