Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box June 2018 Review

Each recipe box comes with what I thought were sticker labels for your recipe creations, but I couldn't get the stickers off the page! Turns out, you have to cut the shapes out individually and peel off the back. It would have been a lot easier if they were stickers.

Now, for the oils I received this month:

Sage Essential Oil, 15mL - Retail Value $14.99

From Simply Earth:

Sage has been used for thousands of years to improve cognition and protect against cognitive decline. While it still boasts these same benefits today, it has also been found to improve scalp health, ease painful muscles, help with tension and head discomfort, and provide support to the immune system.

really love the scent! It's earthy and herby and strong, but not overpowering enough to not be able to mix with other oils in my diffuser.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, 15ml - Retail Value $17.99

From Simply Earth:

Ylang-ylang Essential Oil can help relieve sore muscles while at the same time give a relaxing and sensual effect.

I was pretty shocked at how pricey this one was! Its scent is honestly incredible. If a scent could ever be described as "tingly," I think it'd be ylang-ylang! They describe its aroma as "sweet, floral, slightly fruity with gentle tropical undertones, middle-base note." It's incredible! It can be used for relaxation and to promote healthy skin.

Mandarin Essential Oil, 15mL – Retail Value $9.99

From Simply Earth:

Botanical records show that Mandarin was cultivated in China as early as the 12thcentury BC. Mandarin Essential Oil can be used to soothe sore muscles, while its scent also has a relaxing and calming effect.

This one is just the bee's knees. It smells a lot like my Blood Orange essential oils that I received in a previous box, but I ain't complaining, because I LOVE the smell of citrus. This is a much sweeter orange smell—it's so light and pleasant.

Camphor Essential Oil, 15mL – Retail Value $9.99

From Simply Earth:

Camphor Essential Oil is perfect for those who need help dealing with aches and pains in your joints. It was introduced in Madagascar in the middle of the nineteenth century, and now grows wild in the central region of Asia.

I was pretty hesitant to give this one a whiff because I instantly thought of Spirit of Camphor, which my parents used to sizzle away cold sores on the inside of our lips when we were little! (Was it the right away to go about it? Who knows. Was it painful yet effective? YEP.) Luckily, Camphor Essential Oil is not nearly as negative of an experience. Far from it—this one's aroma certainly smells medicinal, but it's more like a borderline menthol scent. I can see this being great in a diffuser to open sinuses during a cold!

Now we're onto the recipes of this recipe box! I went ahead and detailed my top four favorite recipes they included. First up: Meditation Diffuser Blend.

This is one of the recipe cards I received for a diffuser blend. It. was. amazing. The ylang-ylang and camphor combined to create a deeply soothing and relaxing aroma that filled the room with a heavy, healing scent. It totally zens you out!

This was another similar recipe, except this one combined to make a roller bottle of an oil blend you can apply to your skin! Ylang-ylang, sage, and mandarin essential oils combined with a carrier oil (I used almond!) in a roller bottle I received in a previous Simply Earth Big Bonus Recipe Box. It resulted in an expectedly wonderful aroma, and I love the fact that they say to apply it behind the ears!

It's not too overpowering but lingers just enough to give you relaxing whiffs throughout the day.

This is a more involved recipe for a Sugar Skin Scrub. It was super easy to whip up!

I started by adding 1/2 cup of sugar and two tablespoons of coconut oil to a bowl.

Added 24 drops of Sage Essential Oil and 24 drops of Mandarin essential oil, then stirred it up until it was smooth.

Placed it in an air-tight container, and voila! I can't wait to use this sugar scrub in the shower to exfoliate!

This last recipe was for Mandarin Melt and Pour Loofah Soap.

Simply Earth provided a packet of melt-and-pour soap that was used as the base for this whole concoction.

They also provided a silicon mold to pour the soap in and a small loofah to place in the soap mixture for exfoliation. The only thing was, the loofah was way too big for the cute leaf mold!

Before I began the recipe, I used some major elbow grease to cut the loofah in half so it could (almost) fit into the mold.

Not ideal, but it'd work for me!

I placed my melt-and-pour soap bar in a microwave-safe dish and heated it on 15-second intervals, stirring to combine and smooth the soap as it melted.

Once it was entirely melted, smoothed, and stirred, I added 15 drops of my mandarin essential oils.

Stirred it all together once more, and then poured into my mold for hardening!

Haha, not the prettiest looking creation, but it was my first handmade soap! (Well, almost handmade, since they supplied the whole soap part.) It was firm and hardened after about 13 hours, and I was able to remove it from the mold. Even though it was a bit of an eyesore with loofah sticking out, I still felt super proud of my first-ever DIY soap!

Verdict: I was pleased once again with this month's box inclusions! The ylang-ylang and mandarin essential oils were my favorites by far, so I was pumped to receive recipes that used them both! I've heard some conflicting advice when it comes to using coconut oil on your face, but I'm still very excited to try the exfoliating sugar scrub. My diffuser blends are super relaxing, but I do advise anyone looking to use oils in a diffuser to make sure they're safe for cats and dogs if you have any!

I'm now careful to research all essential oils before putting them in my diffuser to keep my cat safe, as cats' bodies can't process a majority of essential oils to the point where they're toxic and/or deadly. So keep an eye out! My soap was a fun little project, even though it didn't end up looking top-of-the-line, ha! The other two recipes that were included (Bug Off Lotion Bars and Whipped Foot Foot Lotion) either weren't up my alley or required items I didn't have on hand, so I'd also keep that in mind if you subscribe to Simply Earth's recipe box. Some of the items needed for recipes may not be on-hand! All-in-all, I really valued this whole box and the natural creations it allowed for. They always nail such an interesting variety of DIY home recipes!

Thanks to all your reviews of this box and your code, I decided to take the plunge. Am very excited about creating my own recipes for health and home… and ditching all the artificial ingredient stuff I currently have!

THANK YOU for mentioning that essential oils need to be used with caution around cats!! We all want our fur babies to be safe.

Essential oils are absolutely toxic to rabbits and other small animals, so please do not use them if you have these little furries!

Absolutely! There was a time I was diffusing oils into my bedroom without knowing it was harmful—I’m so happy my gal was okay. I guess it was a small enough amount to not be harmful! I shall never do that again. Awesome you keep an eye out too 🙂

My vet said diffusing a couple of drops won’t hurt the cat – it’s only when kitty comes in contact with or ingests the oils that it can be harmful and even fatal. I have three kitties so I made sure I wasn’t going to cause them any issues before I signed up for this sub box.

I thought the Mandarin Melt and Pour Loofah Soap, were two different recipes ?

The recipe itself was called Mandarin Melt and Pour Loofah Soap, because the soap was melt-and-pour. 🙂 Its title is a little confusing, I agree!

Katie, you said you brought the sugar scrub to a boil? I am confused. Do you cook it or just mix it up? Thanks.

Oh, goodness Jody! Haha, that was a typo on my part! I added them to a bowl. So sorry for my mistake! That’s been updated. 🙂
