The Bouqs Subscription Review – June 2018

The Bouqs subscription is a flower delivery service from The Bouqs.com. They send fresh cut flowers to you or a friend as often as you'd like.

You can set your deliveries every week, every 2 weeks, every month, every 2 months, or every 4 months. Plus, you'll choose your Bouqs aesthetic ("The Farmer's Market", "The Classics", "Volcano Roses", or "Simply the Best") and the size of bouquet you prefer (Original, Deluxe, or Grand).

This is a review of the monthly subscription in the Deluxe size ($55 per month).

The flower arrived wrapped in corrugated cardboard for protection. The entire bunch of flowers was secured to the bottom of the box with a heavy-duty plastic tie, so they didn't bounce around in the box during shipping.

The Cost: Choose from 3 different sizes of bouquets—Original (8-14 stems) for $40 per bouquet, Deluxe (16-28 stems) for $55 per bouquet, or Grand (24-56 stems) for $70 per bouquet.

The Products: Fresh flowers from sustainable, eco-friendly farms that are cut-to-order (which means no flowers go to waste). When you sign up, you can choose the style that fits your needs, and pick a frequency for receiving your bouquets (weekly, every two weeks, monthly, every two months, or every four months). You can always pause or change your subscription settings, and even include a note (if for instance, you're sending your subscription flowers to a friend or loved one).

Good to Know: There are discounts that come from subscribing! According to the site, "1-2 Bouq Deliveries gives you a 10% discount, 3-5 qualifies for 15%, 6-12 orders is 20%, and 13+ per year is 25% off. To qualify for these discounts, you will have to pay upfront. Pay as you go is an option, but the discount is not as great."

The Bouqs June 2018 Review

There's nothing like a fresh flower arrangement! It's important to note that The Bouqs sends cut flowers that you need to prep and arrange by yourself. This is not the standard ready-to-admire flower delivery you get from your local florist. Don't worry though, prepping your flowers isn't hard and just takes a little time and love to get it right. I'll walk you through how I got my flowers out of the box and turned them into the pretty arrangement above!

This month my Bouqs shipment came with more detail flower care and arrangement instructions than I've seen in previous deliveries. The extra info says that some flowers may take a couple days to fully open, advises the removal of guard petals on flowers like roses, to avoid submerging leaves in water, and that bent flowers are probably just thirsty. The arranging tips say to measure your vase and cut flowers at lengths that allow for them to stick up about 2" above the top edge of your vase. It also reminds you to use the included plant food and to change the water every other day to extend the life of your flowers.

Here are my blooms out of the box bundled in two small bouquets, wrapped in clear plastic with the stems held together with a rubber band.

The box also included two packets of Chrysal plant food to extend the vase life of my bouquet.

To get started, I trimmed the ends of my flowers at a 45-degree angle and put them in water while I gathered my supplies. I filled a clear glass vase with water and grabbed my ruler, scissors, and paper towels. I saved the kraft paper from the shipping box to use to protect my surface while I worked on my arrangement.

I like the take a measurement of my vase first so I know what length to cut my flowers. My vase is 8 inches tall.

I typically remove any guard petals on roses but these roses came in great shape with no petals needing removal. It's always a good idea to remove leaves from stems as they will make your water murky and shorten the life of your bouquet. Just be careful of thorns on rose stems! I trimmed my roses to a length of 12 inches.

Next, I trimmed the mini poms to 12 inches.

The carnations also got the same treatment with leaves removed and the stems trimmed to 12 inches with the bloom included.

Once I had my main flowers trimmed to the same length, I started placing them in the vase. I put the stems in at an angle with the stems crossing at the center and adding stability and structure to my arrangement. I distributed the roses around the vase among the white mini poms and light green carnations to balance out the pops of color.

With my main flowers in place, I trimmed the green hypericum berries at 13-inch lengths for some variation in height. I left the leaves on to help fill in gaps in the arrangement and also add some deep green color.

Deluxe Class Act Bouquet

This arrangement was super simple to put together. All of the flowers I received were in excellent condition, which isn't always the case with shipped flowers. I have to say I wasn't very excited to see carnations in my shipment but they ended up working so well with the rest of the flowers that I didn't mind them in the end. The roses were the perfect shade of peach and the final arrangement reminded me of the colors I used in my wedding arrangements.

The Bouqs website says that these flowers were grown in Colombia by farmer Juanita:

Located in Bogota, this farm was founded in 1968 and grows a huge variety of focal flowers! With an average of twelve hours of sunlight and mild temperatures year-round, the region’s atmosphere makes for optimal growing conditions. Also, the farm is certified by FLORVERDE, who advocates for and reinforces training, child care and family assistance initiatives, among other fair labor standards.

Verdict: This month's shipment from The Bouqs arrived in great condition. Peach roses were the high-value flower paired with white mini poms, light green carnations, and green hypericum berries. I'd like to see slightly higher value flowers paired with the roses as carnations come across as a cheap addition. The arrangement is more traditional than my last delivery, and though I liked the peach roses, I prefer more casual farm bouquets. I liked the peach, white, and green colors of this shipment very much as they reminded me of my wedding colors. As I usually say with flower subscriptions, I think they make a nice gift for those who like arranging their own flowers but I am always wary of sending someone a project rather than a gift. Value is always an issue with subscriptions like this where you could likely build a similar arrangement from your local grocery store for less. For me, there is value in the convenience of having these flowers delivered, and I don't mind arranging them myself, plus I appreciate knowing more about the farm they came from. If the delight of a surprise bouquet and convenience of home delivery are pluses for you, I'd recommend trying this service. If you like to select your own cut flowers at your local store, you may not find value in this subscription.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? The bouquet you get with your subscription is a surprise, so I can't say that you will get this same arrangement unless you order it individually.
