The Holo Hookup July 2018 "Nostalgic Board Games" Review
Just a heads up, this subscription does not come with an info sheet. All of the value estimates are from what a different holographic polish from the brand would cost. Also, holographic polishes are notoriously difficult to photograph. I did my best, but I promise you that all of the polishes look even better in person. I have been playing around with backgrounds to try and make the colors pop, so let me know what you prefer below!
Cupcake Polish in Free Parking, 15 mL – Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here)
I never knew I needed a nail polish inspired by my beloved Monopoly game—until now! This green definitely reminds me of money, and it is a linear holo with great coverage. The formula was spectacular as well—2 coats for full coverage with no snagging!
Different Dimension in This is How We Roll, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here)
This is technically a red holo, but I am torn between calling it red or orange. Predominantly there is a copper holo that is absolutely perfect—but I am not sure which board game this nail polish was inspired by. Any ideas? This had another great formula with two easy coats for full coverage and the polish itself had a great consistently.
Glisten & Glow in It’s a Hit, 15 mL – Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here)
This was the shade I was most looking forward to, and it did not disappoint! It is a dark charcoal grey with a beautiful rainbow holo when the sunlight hits it. There are also some chrome chameleon flakes thrown in that lean copper, too. The rainbow holo in this polish really is what I have been craving ever since starting my Holo Hookup subscription, so I hope we get more like these in future boxes! This had a bit of a sheer base that would do best with a black base coat of polish compared to building up multiple coats (though that would work just fine too).
Polish ‘M in #SorryNotSorry, 15 mL – Estimated Value $10 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Polish ‘M here)
I am absolutely living for this title — this is exactly how I feel when I own a few houses on Park Place and another person lands on my property. This was a sheer blue jelly holo that built up to consistency beautifully, and I love the combination of the iridescent micro glitter and purple shimmer.
Here is the nail art I did. I really wanted to pair It’s a Hit with some bright and fun colors, so I marbled some of my pastels and used the holo on my accent nails. I am digging the contrast in colors and swooning over the rainbow holo!
Verdict: I loved this months collection from The Holo Hookup — it inspired me to host a girls night/game night this weekend so I can kick some butt in Monopoly. Also, this subscription is the only way you can currently get four different polishes from the four featured brands. If you are used to only the polishes from Ulta or Sallys, you may think the $44 cost of the box is high. I disagree. I only had to pay for one shipping cost instead of four, and I got four exclusive nail polish shades. Another thing to note is that holographic polishes are pretty uncommon in the mainstream polish world, and some brands will even charge more for their holographic polishes (I am looking at you, OPI DS collection). In terms of how long the color will last, I top all of my nails with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, and I have never had an issue with my holo polishes chipping. Overall, I loved the nostalgia this month had to offer (and that grey polish with rainbow holo!!!!), and I am excited for August!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out. Check back here for when the July box goes on sale.
Value Breakdown: I got four polishes for $44, which means each polish cost $11. Considering the estimated value for three of the four polishes is higher than that, and if I were to purchase a polish from each brand individually I would have four shipping costs, I really think this is a good deal for what you get!
