The Stationery Selection July 2018 Review
Heads up! The Stationery Selection is taking August off so there will be no box, but they will return in September.
They've started putting the list of items on the back of the title sheet instead of a separate one. Great idea!
Emily Pencil Washi Stickers
Last month we got a postcard from UK illustrator living in Japan, Emily Pencil. This month her drawings return in the form of colorful stickers with a postal theme! Birds and lanterns deliver letters with other small items like stamps, postcards, envelopes, writing utensils, flowers, and dragonflies surrounding them. These are exclusive as well!
Hallmark World Ticket Letter Pad
Wow- this is quite a lovely pad of paper! It's strange to see a Hallmark item in a Japanese box, but the design features iconic imagery that is certainly not American. The cover, as well as the pages inside, feature gold foiled and metallic scenes of Mt Fuji with a golden pagoda along with traditional Japanese patterns. This will make for a really special letter to a friend!
Midori Letterpress Letter Set
I love letter sets and this simple vintage-style letterpress one from Midori has such a cool design. The pale blue envelopes are a nice size and you have 8 sheets of paper with washed red and blue letterpress embellished edges to stuff into the four of them. The paper is delicate and thin which makes for an elegant letter-writing experience.
Ohto Ceramic Letter Opener
Little tools like this are one of my favorite things to receive in a Japanese stationery box. Things like this don't exist readily in the US and I love the clean design of this ceramic letter opener. All you have to do is run the edge of an envelope through the slit in the opener and voila- it's made a precise thin cut that allows you to free the contents with no worry of a paper cut on your finger.
Maruai Sticky Writing Paper with Dot & Line
This has got to be one of my favorites of the box because I really enjoy the whole design of this sticky pad! Most sticky pads are square, but this one is long and features bright orange lines to jot notes down on. The cover is in a very graphic silver and orange layout that I find visually stunning!
Sailor Fude DE Manen Fountain Pen - Retail Value $11.75
I'm not the biggest fan of fountain pens but I quickly became obsessed with this one as soon as I used it. The ink flows so wonderfully and it glides across the paper, making it really fun to write with. It happens to be HUGE though, which I don't love but will overlook. It's a lot longer than the average pen so it looks a bit comical in my small hand, but I do like the weight of it. I don't know too much about calligraphy, but this nib is a 40-degree one that allows the writer to have bolder or thinner lines based on the angle they write. Very cool!
Red Brown Ink Refills - Retail Value $2.10
An excellent accessory to the pen is this pack of 2 refill cartridges in red-brown ink. I can swap between this and the black as needed, or just wait until I get through all the black ink to switch it up full time. The ink is a nice vintage reddish brown color.
Verdict: The Stationery Selection was great once again this month, in my opinion. They sent me a wonderful new calligraphy pen with refills, a cool letter opener I'll get a ton of use out of, and some gorgeous stationery to write letters on!
