July 2018 #jimihendrix VNYL Review
It was time to revisit a classic for me! The #jimihendrix VNYL Subscription Box features albums from Jimi Hendrix, The Pauses, and Jim James.
It comes with a handwritten note from your personal curator to give some thought and detail behind the selections.
And a little sticker. Typically, we'd get the VNYL logo sticker or a theme sticker - this might be a sticker for a different theme.
They've started including this as well - you can now see dates for specific selections that are still available or coming soon.
Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love
Let's start with the namesake of this theme - Jimi Hendrix. It's been quite a while since I've popped on any Jimi Hendrix, so when I saw this available, it felt like the perfect time to revisit.
It comes with this fantastic booklet. I like reading these while I'm giving it a spin.
The gatefold also just looks great!
While I love listening to anything on vinyl, there's just a special softness and coziness to the older recordings on vinyl. While this isn't my favorite Hendrix album, it is still a great listen - I can't help but smile when Little Wing makes its way around!
Jim James - Eternally Even
Jim James is the frontman of My Morning Jacket - so I thought I had an idea of what I could expect from this album - but it took me for a bit of a loop!
It comes with this big 'ol fold-out poster/liner notes.
While Jim James can't really escape the voice the My Morning Jacket is known for, he does escape the typical sound - this one has more of a moody electronic feel to it - and it works well, I enjoyed it!
The Pauses - A Cautionary Tale
This one can be categorized as the surprise hit of the month! The Pauses are a 3-piece from Orlando, A Cautionary Tale is their 2011 release.
I'm not even sure how to categorize it into a genre - but, I do know that I quickly burned through all 8 songs and was ready for more! I encourage you to give this one a shot!
Verdict: This month is a huge success for me - I think I actually enjoyed the two mystery albums more than the album I chose - that's exactly what I'm looking for.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This subscription is customized to your music preferences. While you may select the same 'vibe' as me, you likely won't receive the same three albums as I do.
