All Around Vegan August 2018 Review
All Around Vegan is a fairly new box for me. Let’s see what they sent this month:
There was a standard information card with more details about the items in the box, including how they fit the categories nutrition, lifestyle, bath/body, and activism.
Bestowed Essentials Charcoal + Mint Tooth Powder, 0.65 oz – Retail Value $7.97
Bestowed Essentials is a new brand for me and they are big on recyclable packaging and reducing the environmental impact of their containers, which I think is wonderful. This definitely has a strong, minty scent, as well. However, I disagree in general with the chemical phobia that pervades marketing for this type of product, and in particular with the labeling of fluoride as a “nasty chemical,” and I will only use toothpaste with fluoride in it. At any rate, so this will be passed along to someone else.
Bamboo Toothbrush – Retail Value $3.47
I’ve been seeing more bamboo toothbrushes in subscription boxes lately and if you are concerned about reducing plastic waste, this is one way you can make an impact. The handle is compostable and I am always in need of new toothbrushes lately since I have Invisalign, which has to be cleaned, plus I have to brush my teeth at least twice as often now. I found this to be an effective toothbrush.
Coconut Banana Bites, (snack size) – Buy a 12-pack for $23.99
I was familiar with this brand from other food subscription boxes. These have a really simple ingredients list – just bananas and coconut. I think I liked these a little more than the plain banana bites (see below), although I didn’t actually dislike either. This would be great if you want the nutrients from a banana but it isn’t convenient to take a fresh one. These are chewy but don’t stick to your teeth too much.
Barnana Original Banana Bites – Buy a 3-pack for $13.99
This is another item I’m familiar with. I do appreciate getting a larger bag (this is resealable) instead of multiple tiny sample sizes. This company uses bananas that may not have the prettiest appearance, but that is still good, to make its snacks, which reduces food waste. These are pretty similar to the ones above but without the coconut.
Rule Breaker P’Nutter Chocolate Chip Blondies – Buy a 4-pack for $17.99
I first became acquainted with this brand in the Vegan Cuts snack box for July. These are school safe (i.e., free of the top 8 allergens). You may be wondering how something can be peanut flavored without containing peanuts (definitely one of the top allergens), and the answer is, it can’t. This uses a pea protein blend to mimic the flavor of peanut butter and it honestly isn’t a very successful attempt. This tastes like pea protein and there are actually very few chocolate chips. On the other hand, this has a lovely texture and while I’m not such a fan of this flavor, I’m open to others.
Rule Breaker Birthday Cake Blondie – Buy a 4-pack for $17.99
This one is also free of the top 8 allergens but it does a little bit better of a job tasting like what it says. I do get a birthday cake vibe from this one. It also has a nice texture, but I’m not sure the sprinkles are doing it any favors – they look like they got wet and started breaking down on top of the snack. When reading the description, I was surprised to learn this was supposed to have white chocolate chips – I guess I didn’t notice them.
“Nothing Humane Happens in a Slaughterhouse” T-Shirt – Estimated Value $22
This is custom-printed and is not in the All Around Vegan shop, so I’ve used the value from one of their other custom shirts. You do pick a shirt size (and gender) when you sign up for this subscription, and this fits me (was a little loose but XS was not an available size choice; and FYI, the shirts are unisex and your choices are S, M, L, and XL). I think the message here is appropriate considering the target audience for this box, and it certainly fits well with the overall goals, aesthetic, and curation of this subscription as I’ve experienced it for the past few months.
What is Speciesism? Pamphlets, (10 count) – Buy 1 pamphlet for a $0.07 donation
This is the activism item for the month. I really was not aware of how many organizations out there are offering vegan stickers, pamphlets, and other educational materials! The pamphlet introduces the idea of speciesism but then changes over to a general vegan starter guide (like what you can order at restaurants and vegan dairy substitutes). Anyway, if you know or encounter people who might like more information on a vegan lifestyle, you can hand these out. I just think something like this would be more convincing and/or useful to someone already considering veganism as opposed to random strangers on the street.
Verdict: I did not calculate a value for All Around Vegan this month because many of the items were not available for individual purchase and the shirt was exclusive to the box. This subscription costs $42.45 (with shipping), and I think you probably get out a little ahead of that. I am always up for trying new snacks (even if I don’t always end up loving every flavor of a product), the personal care products I’ve received in this subscription are definitely new and different, and I do like the focus on reducing the environmental impact of the contemporary Western lifestyle.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up now, you’ll get the September box (ships September 1st) as your first box.
