We have FULL spoilers for the August 2018 Boxwalla Book box!
Each August Boxwalla Book box includes:
The first book we showcase, is considered the national novel of Azerbaijan : Ali and Nino written by Kurban Said. Kurban Said is a pseudonym and the real identity of the novelist still remains a mystery.Ali and Nino is a love story, published in 1937 in Vienna, between a Muslim boy Ali and a Georgian Christian girl Nino. It is set in a time and place rife with war and cultural/religious tensions. The story takes place between 1914 & 1920 primarily in the old city of Baku in Azerbaijan, but you are also taken to Persia, Tbilisi in Georgia, Shush in Azerbaijjan and to Daghestan. The novel is so evocative and heartbreakingly haunting yet restrained.
The second book we showcase, is by a writer who is a favorite of the likes of Haruki Murakami and Lydia Davis, among others : T. Singer by acclaimed Norwegian writer Dag Solstad.T. Singer follows the life of 34 year old Singer after he graduates from library school and moves from Oslo to a small mountain town, where he unexpectedly falls in love with a ceramicist. Solstad has an uncanny way of being deeply insightful & melancholic while also making one laugh.
