Deck of Scarlet July/August 2018 Review
This month’s palette was designed by British beauty, Belle Jordan “who’s all about heavy metallics, pigments that pop, and plenty of sparkle.” This palette certainly includes all of these things!
Check out Belle Jordan’s tutorial for Deck of Scarlet’s Edition 09 box here.
The packaging of this box feels high-quality and cohesive. The black and white design with pops of color works well for not only this box but for all of Deck of Scarlet’s boxes. So, after collecting a couple of palette editions, you’ll have a cohesive set that looks super nice on your vanity.
“Powerful. Decadent. Fierce.” is what this palette is all about. With “lush, deluxe hues in silky smooth textures,” this collection includes everything needed to create a glam look that can be amped up from neutral to fierce. All ingredients are listed here as well.
This palette feels well-made and sturdy while being lightweight and slim. Looks like a perfect palette to travel with to me. I like the nice-sized mirror in case I’m doing makeup on the move. The Deck of Scarlet website offers so many tips and tricks that are specific to each palette. Including these possible looks:
Here are the two lip shades. I like how the lip flap opens separately to help keep the powders out of the cream. There is a bold and bright shade and a more neutral and soft shade. These are similar to a traditional creamy lipstick but with a slightly thinner texture. They apply smoothly and opaquely without cracking or flaking off. They don’t last for a very long time but are easy to touch up with just the swipe of a finger.
This side has both the eyeshadows (smaller pans) and highlighter and blush (bigger pans). I was awed by the purple shimmer shade when I opened this and it did not fail to impress! Both Supernova and Drama are soft and powdery while Crush is a bit stiffer, but they all blend well.
The blush is subtle and buildable and the highlihgter is BAM! – bright and in your face with hardly any product.
The extra product for this edition is a super black mascara. I’m surprised I like it so much. The brush is a tapered spoolie that is easy to get close to the lashline and onto the smaller lashes. The formula is very dark and good at lengthening and giving some feathery volume. It seems to be more of a dry formula so I’m interested to see how long it lasts before becoming too dry.
Here are swatches of the shades in the palette (from left to right):
2 Lip Colors:
- Passion - Bright orchid pink with creamy matte finish
- Tempting - Cool toned creamy pink
Highlighter:
- Shhhh - Champagne gold shimmer
Cheek Color:
- Whisper - Matte dusty rose with hint of gold
3 Eyeshadows:
- Drama - Grey-brown soft matte
- Crush - Plum-brown matte
- Supernova - Amethyst with white and blue iridescent shimmer
So, I watched the tutorial by Belle Jordan but still ended up with my own dramatic look. I started by slowly building up the intensity of Crush on my lid and in my crease. Then I darkened the very outer corner of my upper and lower lid with Drama. I applied Supernova to the middle and inner corner of my eye with my fingertip which allowed me to really pack it on. As I was highlighting with Shhh, I decided to add a little streak of it on the outer edge of my eye to add an unexpected twist to this look. I went with the lighter of the lip colors since my eyes were so...crazy. A dab of the blush on the apples of my cheeks and a swipe of mascara wrap up this look.
Verdict: I’m pretty impressed with my first Deck of Scarlet palette and I think the concept is fun. You get a palette, extra products, and access to tutorials from the beauty gurus that helped to create the palette and look in one nicely designed package for $24.95, including free US shipping. All of the shades work for me and I can see myself using them all in my makeup routine. BUT...the standout was by far the shimmery purple shade Supernova. It is gorgeous and unique! If the quality of these products is consistently this good, I can see my makeup collection building up quickly.
