Our Review

Unboxing the Foodstirs Brownie Explorer Cruise Ship Baking Kit

This month's Foodstirs kit is to make 6 brownie "boats"!

Brownie Explorer Cruise Ship Recipe

The box includes everything you need except oil, eggs, and water. This kit is definitely less complex overall than kits we've received in the past, but I'm kind of thankful for that after the time required to make our last project. This one took less than an hour start to finish.

Brownie Explorer Cruise Ship Recipe

As always, the recipe and decoration are broken down into just six easy steps.

Nutritional Facts

Each kit includes a card with nutrition facts including the calories and ingredient listings for each component. As usual, the calories for the wet ingredients that you add (eggs, oil) are not included here, so you need to do that math yourself if you want to see how these stack up in total.

Bonus Activity

On the back is a fun activity sheet that matches the theme of the project.

Ready to get started with the actual baking?

Cupcake Liners

Foodstirs really makes sure that they give you everything you need except for wet ingredients and basic kitchen tools, so they include 6 paper liners for your brownie cupcakes.

Brownie Mix

This month's project is so simple that I didn't even have time to take in-progress shots! There's only one mix: the Foodstirs Organic Chocolate Lovers Brownie Mix. All you do is mix this up with eggs, oil, and water, and you're ready to start filling up your cupcake pan with batter.

But don't worry, these aren't plain brownies:

Ocho Caramels

They have a secret hidden treasure of caramel inside! Yum. The instructions have you chill these for 20-25 minutes in the freezer before you hide them in the center of each brownie batter cup and put into the oven.

I found my brownies took the full 22 minutes to cook through, but while we were waiting I got started prepping the decorations:

Skewers

Wooden skewers for your ship's masts!

Paper Decorations

Paper cutouts for the "boats" themselves and festive red spoon flags...

Paper Decorations

Plus bigger striped flags to make the sails.

Usually, these boxes involve a lot of decoration like marshmallows and sprinkles and naturally dyed yogurt-based icing. This is the first one I've received that was more of a paper craft! I did have to search around the house for some tape, which I can never find, but otherwise, this was pretty straightforward.

(My three-year-old was not really into this at all, so I ended up doing the actual decoration part myself.)

Finished Brownie Boats

You guys. These are so much cuter than I thought they'd be from the photo on the box!

The brownies are BIG too since they are made in a regular sized muffin tin. The box only makes six, but I could easily just eat half of one and feel satisfied.

The caramel filling did make little dimples in the top of the brownies– if you look closely, you can see some of that shiny caramel goodness in the brownie in the top right!

One last thing! Our box this month included some extra coupons, tucked inside this little apple pattern lunch bag:

It is back to school time, so I wasn't surprised to see that as a bit of a theme here. (Brownies are a great lunchbox dessert because they aren't too messy and are sturdy enough to transport well!)

Coupons Coupons

Foodstirs doesn't often include other brands in their boxes, so adding this Ocho coupon is a nice touch.

Finally a Foodstirs coupon! My son loves granola bars so I'm definitely thinking about picking some of these up to bake together. I've been seeing Foodstirs products more and more in the grocery store and in my local Starbucks stores lately.

Verdict: This project was so easy– easier than most Foodstirs projects! But it did not compromise at all on taste. The brownies were everything I like in a brownie: dense and chocolatey, and with that extra kick of caramel in the middle... soooooo good. Although my son isn't quite school age yet, I appreciate that they sent something a little easier and perfect for school lunches this time around, during what is a hectic time of year for a lot of parents.

Also worth noting: Foodstirs has gone back down to a more reasonable shipping rate since my last review (currently $7.99 vs $14.90).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: For one premium baking kit shipped every other month, the price is currently $26.98 ($18.99 + $7.99 shipping) or $23.19 with our 20% off coupon code ($15.20 + $7.99 shipping).

Kits typically have anywhere from 6 to 12 servings. This box has 6 (generously sized!) brownies, which means each would be about $4.50.
