Nomadik July 2018 Review
We can start off with the Nomadik booklet. We’ve got full product descriptions, tips, discounts, and the monthly challenge laid out in a compact design. This month’s theme is Packed Up, and we get a box focusing on gear maintenance.
Gobi Gear Compression SegSac 15L – Retail Value $36.99
Up first this month we have this compressible, segmented stuff sack from Gobi Gear! I received the larger, non-compressible version of this bag from another subscription last year and my only gripe was that I couldn’t scrunch it down when fully packed. The compression straps on the SegSac are super sturdy and can effectively shrink the bag to half size depending on what you’ve got packed in there. I love the segmented design, it allows me to keep my bag organized but compact. I was able to stuff my entire sleeping kit into this 15L bag, minus the stakes for my rain fly just because I didn’t want to risk popping a hole in the Cordura 30d nylon.
GearAid Elastic Shock Cord – Retail Value $4.50
Up next we have this 84” length of shock cord from GearAid. GearAid is one of those brands that pops up in subscription boxes all the time, and that’s not a complaint. Their products always seem to be high quality. This shock cord might not be a glamorous item, but it’s something that’ll come in really handy when you need it. You can use it to replace the cinch lines in bags, or just to lash stuff to your pack in a pinch. It’s got a decent stretch to it but bounces back easily as expected.
Grangers Gear Cleaner Spray – Retail Value $10.00 (found here for $9.00)
Granger’s is another brand that seems to pop up in subscriptions every now and then, and this month we’re getting 2 products from them in Nomadik. First up we have the Gear Cleaner Spray, which is a spray-on cleaner that is safe for outdoor products from clothing to boots and even your gear. It’s a good prep step for items you plan to apply waterproofing to, and won’t harm water-repellant finishes you’ve already applied. The spray applies easily, and all you have to do is wipe it off, it’ll take all the dirt and odors with it as it goes.
Grangers OneShot Clothing Wash and Repel – Retail Value $3.50
Next we’ve got this detergent that combines cleaning and water repelling in one bottle. Grangers OneShot will clean your dirty gear and also restore the water repellant layer on most outdoor clothing. This month we get a 2 oz bottle which is about half what they recommend for a single garment (100ml/3.3oz), so you’ll be able to use this to clean and protect a pair of socks, maybe a shirt - enough to help you decide if you need to get a full size bottle in the future.
Drip Drop ORS Packets – Estimated Value $4.99 (buy 4 packets for $9.99)
Finally this month we get this sample pack of Drip Drop Oral Rehydration Sticks in Berry and Lemon flavors. Each packet is enough to turn a 16.9 oz bottle of water into an electrolyte-boosting energy drink. Each packet contains about 14g of sugar, which is considerably less than your standard Gatorade, but you’ll be taking in a lot more sodium (about 660mg vs 190mg in Gatorade). There are also considerably less calories in the Drip Drop packets. They taste pretty good, about on par with other energy drink mixes.
Verdict: Nomadik was good this month. I love the SegSac and know I’ll be using it regularly, and the other products will likely come in handy after a long trip. They promise up to $50 worth of items in each box, and this month’s retail value comes out to $59.98 - one of the higher value boxes in recent Nomadik memory!
