SlutBox by Amber Rose August 2018 Review
First off- a quick note that one item (the rose quartz) wasn't included and will be shipping with the next box instead. All subscribers should have received an email.
The first thing SlutBox comes with is a large glossy "zine". I think it's the most important part of the box and always learn things I deem to be really important about being respectful and inclusive to everyone! This month's theme is "The Body Electric" and focuses on being "BoPo" or Body Positive!
The first two pages remind you to share on social media and a letter from MUVA, introducing this month's box.
(the rose quartz got held up and will be shipping in the next "Slutember" box)
The next three spreads give you in-depth info about the included items.
The next two pages guide you on how to take a "fire" nude. I love the tips on using natural light and not to overedit the body you're in.
Then there are "whoreoscopes"!
SlutBox then puts the spotlight on artist Shawnette "ShawnG" George and her "ThirstTrapSelfieLove" series. The next page has a short self-love worksheet that allows you to fill in the blanks and celebrate yourself.
A short interview with Queen V founder Lauren Steinberg and "Slut of the Month" Jasmine Grimes grace the next spread.
The back gives you some self-affirming statements to say out loud to yourself (or just think) to battle negative thoughts that may come into your head.
Anatasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose - Retail Value $20.00
The first item is a liquid lipstick by popular brand Anatasia Beverly Hills. I think this color is perfect and will be amazing for fall. I love mauves and this dusty rose fits the bill really well. The formula is not too thin, not too thick, and glides on. I found the applicator to be really great too. It's flat but wide and allows me to get smooth coverage with minimal effort. Once it's dry it seems pretty kiss-proof. Big fan of this one!
Queen V P.S. I Lube You - Estimated Retail Value $0.30 (Buy 3 oz for $9.00)
I don't think I've ever tried aloe-based lube before but I'm willing to give it a shot! This 0.1 oz pouch is safe to use with latex and is all-natural. What's even better is that the company was started by a woman who wants to put vaginal health first with a range of products that keep things gentle and pH balanced.
Fierce As F*ck Door Hanger - Listed Retail Value $4.95
I don't really buy that this is worth almost $5.00 since it's basically just a coupon in the form of a door hanger, but I enjoy the sentiment. Down the front spells SLUT with the words "Sexually Liberated Unapologetic Thinker".
L.O.V. Blush Liason Dewy Gel Blush Stick in Daring Pink - Retail Value $12.60 USD (€10.99)
My stick got a little melty in transit due to the summer heat but is still completely functional once I adjusted it a bit. I am a huge fan of cream blushes but I normally use my fingers to blend it into my cheeks. This smart chubby stick has a dense soft brush on the other side with shirt bristles that make it easy to blend without getting messy. This light pink color is super cute and very buildable too. Into it!
Self Love Supply Sticker Pack - Listed Retail Value $11.00
Stickers are a bit hard to price because so many nice ones like this are acquired free when you order something, but can also be sold. It looks like a similar one that says "More Self Love" in peach against a white background is $3.50 in their shop, but I can't find the other. Again, the sentiment is great but the value is a little "meh" for me on this one.
The Better Skin Co. Mirakle Cream - Estimated Retail Value $4.25 (Buy 2 oz for $34.00, on sale for $23.80)
I am all about skincare so I was stoked to see this sample included in the box. It absorbs into the skin really quickly and leaves it powder-soft. It's made in the USA with coconut oil, shea buckthorn, shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe, and algae. This is to be used twice a day after cleansing so I'm eager to see how it turns out long term.
There are coupon codes as well for two of their products: Mirakle Cream and Lava Makic.
CannaSmack Vegan Hemp Lip Balm in Bubble Gum Kush - Retail Value $3.99
One of my most-received and most "meh" items in sub boxes is a lip balm. This one is hemp-infused but contains no THC so it's not going to make you have different vibes. The bubble gum scent/flavor I received is on-point, but this is kind of a hum-drum item for me and will be tossed into a box with the 10 other balms I have to await winter.
Satin Dams Assorted Flavors Dental Dams - Total Retail Value $7.80 ($1.95 each)
Pretty impressed to see dental dams included this month! I know that these are a safe way to practice oral sex but I feel like they're not talked about much in mainstream sexual awareness. Just seeing them and having them explained in the zine makes me feel more educated. Each one is a 10 x 6" sheet of latex flavored with strawberry, spearmint, wildberry, or vanilla. and create a barrier between you and your partner to make sure nothing unsavory (like STIs) gets passed to one another. These are also safe to use with water or silicone-based lubrication.
To cut down on breakage or the possibility of slipping off, One Condoms has more specifically sized condoms. SlutBox has included a paper chart to determine the right size for the person in your life who needs to don a condom securely. No value on this one since there is a downloadable version on their site, but an enlightening item none-the-less.
Bathhouse Soapery & Caldarium Hot Southern Mess Soap - Retail Value $8.00
This really beautifully swirled soap is made from saponified oils of soybean, olive oil, organic coconut oil, organic sustainable palm oil, spring water, sodium hydroxide, fragrance oils, titanium dioxide, mica, activated charcoal. I immediately liked the smell which comes from poppy, pomegranate, osmanthus, and sugar cane. This 4.5 oz chunk will get you clean the morning after a wild night.
They've included a coupon code as well.
The last item listed is the "sexy surprise".
Mine turned out to be two items: the Lelo Hex condoms that I received in the first ever SlutBox, and an eyeshadow duo from Flirt.
Lelo Hex Condoms, 3 pack - Retail Value $7.19
When I first received these in the May box, I was excited to try this "new technology", but a reader emailed us to let us know about a blog post (site NSFW) about these being potentially dangerous, so I'm not sure I'll use these.
Flirt Molten Chich Metallic Eyeshadow Duo in This ORE That - Estimated Retail Value $15.00 (similar linked)
The case for this eyeshadow duo is pretty adorable and it comes in a compact with a mirror which is helpful! The two shades are a complementary golden bronze color and deep velvety burnt red. Like the lipstick I received, I think these will be great colors for fall and I find them to be pretty well pigmented. Both are super shimmery as well.
Here's the blush, lipstick, and eyeshadow swatched!
Verdict: SlutBox this month had a few great items but overall felt a bit blah to me. Some of the items seem to be promotional ones that have a low value and strike me as something you'd get as a free sample at a festival or conference. The lipstick, eyeshadow, and facial cream will get used and I can appreciate the dental dam education, but none of the rest of it really excited me. Once again, this seems like a beauty box with a lot of filler with the addition of an awesome positive zine. Nothing here seemed like a "hero" item to me that I could get excited about and as usual, many of the items seemed to have an inflated value listed.
