BBQ Box July 2018 Review
The card that’s included boasts a recipe from Mr. Mixon himself, offering insight on how to use all of the delicious goodies that are in the box!
Every month is a new recipe, and this month is for BBQ Plank Salmon looks right up my alley! I love grilled fish; sometimes I even crave it during the summertime. I love how fresh fish tastes, and when you pair it with the smokiness of both the wood plank and the fire of the grill, it rounds out the flavor and makes a fish dish super-hearty and satisfying. I’m really excited to see Myron has in mind with this recipe!
Cedar Planks x 2 - Estimated Value $7.99 (based on similar item)
The first item in the box is the star of the show, and is such a great item to discuss in relation to grilling! There are tons of wooden implements that can be used in conjunction with the grill, and the most important thing to remember is to soak these items before you place them on those grates! This duo of cedar planks (which are each about the size of my hand) needs to be soaked for thirty minutes before use to ensure they don’t flame up on the grill (wood is flammable, after all). I usually just soak mine in water, but Myron says you can soak them in sake, wine, or cider, which sounds delicious!
Carnivore Club Elk Jerky x 4
While waiting for the planks to soak, Myron suggested snacking on the jerky - don’t mind if I do! I love game meats, especially in the game meats realm - they have a stronger flavor that really holds up to the smokiness of the jerky-ifying process. These were delicious, and I liked that it was a group of four individually-wrapped pieces instead of a bag of jerky. The texture was nice, too - tender without being mushy.
K & M Bar-B-Q All Purpose Rub & Marinade, 5.5 oz - Retail Value $4.50
Suitable for red meats, poultry, and fish, this dry rub is sweet, smoky, and has a little bit of a kick to it! This contains chipotle pepper, which gives it that heat, and the garlic in this really shines through! I think this is totally genius for salmon, as described in the recipe, and I think it would be good sprinkled on stone fruit before grilling, too, like some peaches or maybe plums.
K&M White BBQ Sauce, 16 oz - Retail Value $5.00
I’m not super-familiar with white barbecue sauce as a rule - I’ve only seen it on a menu here and there before! This stuff is completely delicious; so full of flavor! It has a nice vinegar edge to it and has a major mustard flavor. I noticed that this also contains eggs, which makes sense, because it’s nice and rich, with slightly unctuous textures. Myron instructs us to brush the fish with it right before grilling. Salmon is the perfect canvas for this sauce, and I think it would be delicious with shrimp, too!
Verdict: BBQ Box really delivered this month to bring a perfect recipe for me! I loved the ingredients this month and am thrilled I finally got to try white barbecue sauce. The elk jerky was amazing, and I think I’m going to put that rub on everything until the weather turns cool. The valuation this month is admittedly a little bit low, but I think the curation here is important. I personally wouldn’t know where to get specialized items like the sauce on my own, and most importantly, BBQ Box brings exciting new varieties of jerky to my door (I swear it’s the brightest spot of my husband’s entire month sometimes!).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you sign up today, you get the welcome box as your first. BBQ Box has so many new sign-ups per month they’ve designated a welcome box as the first box to make sure they have enough in stock for all subscribers. Then, the following month, you receive your first regular BBQ Box.

Due to a large, unknown number of monthly sign-ups we have to have 1 box as a welcome kit (version 1.0 of each box) ready by the shipping date so we have enough in stock for all of our new customers. For that reason we order thousands of items for the three Welcome Boxes, ready to go since the shipping window (25th-30th) is so small after the cutoff time (the 24th), so we can get you your box asap.
Value Breakdown: At $32.54 ($24.99 a month + $7.55 for PGH shipping) for this box, you are paying approximately $8.14 for each of the four items (counting both the cedar planks and the four jerky sticks as one item each).
