Freshly Meal Delivery September 2018 Review
For this week’s Freshly delivery, I choose from a wide selection of breakfast and entrée choices. I’m not a big breakfast eater so I choose mostly entrees. The menu lists the item number, name, SKU and quantity of the 6 meals I choose. I noticed that the breakfast items are in blue packaging and the entrée items are in the green packaging.
BLT Omelette with Parmesan Cheese
The BLT omelet contains eggs, spinach, tomatoes, bacon, and parmesan cheese. I enjoyed the taste and was surprised at the generous portion and how filling it was. With only 390 calories and 6g of carbs, this breakfast is diet and keto-friendly.
My omelet was well seasoned and I didn't feel the need to sprinkle on any extra salt. It was good to me, right out the box with nothing extra added, but Freshly recommends adding a pinch of sea salt, black pepper or chili flakes if you want to spice it up a bit. It also would taste great with a side of salsa or a few slices of avocado.
The good read inside the sleeve for the BLT omelet is an article on how to make a healthier BLT. The article suggests choosing eggs over bread, spinach over lettuce, but keeping the bacon – the best part!
Chicken Risotto with Spring Peas
This yummy risotto contains rice, chicken breast, peas, onions, mushrooms, garlic, Chablis, butter, and cheese. It is a delicious entrée and probably my favorite dish of the bunch! It contains a reasonable 490 calories, 21g of fat, and 41g of carbs. I had the risotto for lunch, but it was filling enough to be dinner.
Like the previous dish, I found the risotto and chicken to be well seasoned. The chicken wasn’t dry at all and that’s impressive for a chicken breast – especially one that has been cooked and reheated. Freshly suggests that this dish can be spiced up with some chopped parsley, grated parmesan or fresh cracked pepper.
The good read inside the sleeve for the chicken risotto is an article about the power of stillness to control a restless mind. The article describes how stillness helps us be in control, that being still is not the same as being lazy and talks about the importance of having a day to just relax and be still.
Chicken Tikka Masala with Vegetable Biryani
Chicken tikka masala is one of my favorite Indian dishes. It's usually a "cheat meal" for me but Freshly keeps it healthy and under 500 calories. This meal contains chicken and chickpeas marinated in tikka masala sauce with a side of basmati rice with carrots, green beans, and peas. This is the only meal where I didn’t feel completely satisfied and full after eating. This is likely because my Indian dining experiences usually end with unbuttoned jeans and a nap!
The chicken tikka masala was bursting with flavor and all the familiar Indian spices. I appreciated the addition of veggies in the basmati rice for a healthier and more balanced meal. Each meal comes with tips on ways to spice up or top off a dish. Freshly recommended a dollop of raita for the masala and I agree wholeheartedly. I would have loved to have a side off riata included with the meal! Unlike the other suggestions, this was the only topper I would not have had readily available in my fridge.
The good read inside the sleeve for the chicken tikka masala was an article about getting active outdoors and all the health benefits of vitamin D. It encourages readers to find easy ways to build time outdoors into our daily routines. This could be a quick after dinner walk, gardening or taking a hike with friends.
Homestyle Meatloaf with Cauliflower Mash
The Homestyle Meatloaf is another hit! Meatloaf, mash, peas, and onions are comfort food perfection. I want to eat this dinner while snuggled up on my couch with a super soft throw next to a real wood burning fireplace but it's still 90 degrees in Georgia! Comfort foods tend not to be the healthiest, but this dish is only 490 calories due to some healthy substitutions that did not take away from the taste.
The cauliflower mash was my favorite in this dish. I’ve tried, without success, to make good cauliflower mash at home and it all falls short. If the talented Freshly chefs would like to grace me with this recipe, I would be forever grateful. It’s so good!
The good read inside the sleeve for the homestyle meatloaf highlights foods you didn't know could be gluten-free. Some examples are meatloaf with no breadcrumbs, spaghetti, and lasagna using squash and zucchini in place of the pasta, natural oats and oatmeal, and chili and beans.
Pork Al Pastor with Cotija Cheese & Mexican Street Corn
The roasted Mexican street corn with cotija cheese was the stand out of this dish! But, the juicy pork marinated in citrus juices and tangy onions was good too! It was one of the higher calorie dishes I tried but not by much. It was a generous and filling portion for only 540 calories.
The corn was smoky and sweet with a pinch of salt from the cotija cheese. The pork was cooked perfectly and delicious. I really enjoyed this dish! Freshly recommends adding chopped cilantro or a few slices of avocado to bring out the complex flavors. I’ll definitely try this the next time.
The good read inside the sleeve for the pork al pastor was the same article as the chicken tikka masala. After reading the article about getting active outdoors, I was encouraged to take an early morning walk around my neighborhood. It cleared my mind and was a nice start to my day.
This dish has a spicy kick! I love shrimp paella but rarely have it due to the long wait at restaurants. “If you want the paella, order it now and it’ll be ready in an hour.” With Freshly, I got this yummy dish is less than 3 minutes and under 500 calories.
I loved that this dish is choke-full of andouille and shrimp. You can top it off with a drizzle of olive oil or paprika, but I found the spice level to be perfect. It would be nice to see an all seafood paella or one that includes chicken. Honestly, any protein would go well with the perfectly seasoned white rice and spices.
The good read inside the sleeve was an article all about protein. It described how protein works to give you energy and keep you feeling full and strong.
The Verdict: I was impressed! I enjoyed all the Freshly meals. They were consistently fresh, well-portioned, flavorful and healthy without sacrificing taste. My favorite dishes were the chicken risotto with sweet peas and the meatloaf with cauliflower mash. I can’t wait to try other Freshly meals on the menu. If you want the convenience of having fresh, already prepared meals that are delicious, gluten-free and ready in minutes, you should give Freshly a try!
