Go Native! September 2018 Review
The front of the info card this month teaches us the Hawaiian word "mauna" which means "stand tall, stand together" and puts the spotlight on the plants of Hawaii.
On the flipside, you'll find a list of the items and a short description of each.
Ho Ola Mauna Print Beeswax Wraps - Estimated Retail Value $8.33 (Buy a 3 pack of similar for $12.50)
Way back in October of last year, I was introduced to beeswax wraps for the first time from Go Native. With all of the garbage floating around in the world these days, I'm glad there are eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags and food storage containers. These wraps are made with cotton, beeswax, tree resin, and organic jojoba oil which means they are 100% biodegradable. All you have to do is warm them up in your hands and then they easily wrap around food or can be used as a lid for a container. The two prints included this time are super cute and geometric while staying true to Hawaiian patterns. The coolest thing is that these can last up to a year and once you're done can be composted or even used as a firestarter!
Mamalani Akahai Foot Powder, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $4.33 (Buy 3 oz. for $13.00)
I am always excited to see a new powder from Mamalani in this box. Here, they've sent a foot powder made of clay, taro, and baking soda (among others) and is scented with my favorite- lemongrass! I wear a lot of shoes sans-socks because socks are the enemy in warmer months. I have hot feet! I can't help it! This foot powder helps soak up any moisture or unsavory smells that can waft from my shoes. I'm also a big fan of the lid that easily dispenses the powder in two ways.
Maunakea Tea Green Tea Lip Balm - Retail Value $3.00
This is one of the few boxes that I will not hate on for including a lip balm. It totally makes sense to receive one here and I know it's going to be handmade with natural ingredients and smell awesome. I don't use as much balm in the warmer months, but I've mentioned before that I like to prep all of my jackets and coats with a tube at all times and keep some in my desk at work to keep my pout hydrated and soft. This particular balm includes cocoa butter, beeswax, and organic tea seed oil in addition to the organic coconut oil and organic green tea. One swipe has my lips feeling silky.
Hawaii Bookmarks Mauna Koa Wood Earrings - Retail Value $30.00
Another throwback item to last year's November Go Native box are these koa wood earrings. This time I received a different style with slightly lighter wood but in the same triangular shape. Following the shapes of the beeswax wraps, these have triangles cut out to create a clean geometric pattern. They're also super light so they won't weigh down your earlobes. The earrings are made only from pieces of fallen trees from the slopes of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Mountains so they're repurposed in a great way! These remind me a lot of the Triforce from Legend of Zelda, so I may gift them to my friend who is a huge fan.
Mauama Native Plants of Mauna Kea Cards, 5 pack - Estimated Retail Value $12.50 (Buy a 10 pk for $25.00)
The last item is really unique for this subscription! I'm used to getting beauty-related products but it's cool to see a stationery item this month. This set of greeting cards highlights five different plants that are indigenous to Hawaii with beautifully drawn illustrations. The paper they're on is really pretty and has a raw edge on one side. The back has the name of the plant and a wealth of information about each. Send these as a greeting and the recipient can learn something new! You could also color it in yourself or encourage them to do so. Each one comes with a matching envelope that has a matching raw edge that really elevates the thoughtfulness of sending snail mail.
Verdict: This month's Go Native! had a couple of old favorites and some new surprising items as well. I'll get the most use out of the foot powder and lip balm, am excited to use the beeswax wraps, and will use the earrings and cards as great gifting items.
