Home Made Luxe Coffee Mug Holder & Sign September 2018 Review
The DIY home décor project for September is a super cute coffee mug holder and sign. The printed materials include step by step instructions with photos. The front page of the instructions showcases this month’s craft kit, the inside provides detailed instructions with pictures and a link to the video tutorial, and the back highlights a way to win a free box and a VIP coupon for $10 off one-time craft kits.
The materials in the box included:
- Walnut Hollow 29069 Pine Rectangle Plaque, 9x11x0.63 in – Retail Value $8.60
- Deco Art American Gel Stains Paint, 2 oz – Retail Value $6.89
- Timeless Frames Abbot Matted Frame Tabletop, 6x8, Walnut – Retail Value $7.60
- 2 Coffee Decals
- Picture Hanging Hardware
- 2 Black Hooks
- Foam Paint Brush
- Coffee Beans
- Glue Stick
- Sandpaper
The materials needed but not included in the box are a hammer, screwdriver, credit card for applying the decals and an optional glue gun. I also used a paper plate to hold the wood stain while painting the plague and a ruler would have been helpful when installing the hanging hardware and hooks.
Also included in the box was a coupon for 10% off your 1st order and a Do Not Disturb Sign to remind your family that there is a “craftaholic at work”!
Although not included in the instructions, I started the coffee mug holder craft by sanding down the jagged edges of the plaque with the sandpaper provided. Once smooth, I applied two coats of wood stain to the plaque and let it dry overnight. The next day I applied the picture hanging hardware to the back of the plaque. The gold hanging hardware was cute and sturdy, but the nails were tiny. It took a little concentration and effort to attach the hardware. I used the printed instructions to make sure the hardware was even.
The next step was to apply the “but first, coffee” decal to the wood plaque. I’ve applied decals before, so the process was familiar and easy for me. I simply peeled the blue paper away leaving the decal and the clear transfer paper. I then applied the decal to the wood plaque using a credit card to gently remove the decal from the transfer paper and firmly adhere it to the plaque.
The final step was to apply the 2 black hooks using a screwdriver and the gold screws provided. I worried that it would be hard screwing the hooks into the solid wood plaque but, it was easy. Still, pre-drilled holes would have been nice to ensure proper placement.
Check out the final project! I love it! This will be a nice addition to my at-home coffee bar.
Each box includes a small bonus craft or crafty freebie. I started off the coffee sign bonus craft by applying the “in case of emergency break glass” decal to the picture frame. This step was so hard! I lost all confidence gained by easily applying the decal to the plaque in the process of trying to apply this decal. The letters were so tiny and the decal did not want to adhere to the glass of the frame. So tedious! But, I took a deep breath and called on all the patience I could muster to complete this step.
The final steps were to remove the matting, pour in the coffee beans and replace and secure the backing. A glue gun could be used at this step, but I found that I didn’t need to do much to secure the backing. I love how this mini project came out!
Verdict: These crafty projects were Pinterest perfect! I absolutely adore how the projects came together. The steps were not too difficult to follow, and it didn’t take much time to complete. These would make very nice gifts! But, since I love all things coffee, I will be happily adding this coffee mug holder and sign to my coffee bar.

Value Breakdown: The cost of this box is $39.99 ($29.99 + $10.00 shipping) and creates one Coffee Mug Holder and one Sign. The retail value of the materials, not including the smaller items (decals, hanging hardware, hooks, paint brush, coffee beans, glue stick, and sandpaper), was $23.09. That leaves $16.90 for the smaller materials, the coffee mug holder and the sign. This is a fantastic value!
