SlutBox by Amber Rose September 2018 Review

Slutbox Zine

SlutBox comes with a zine every month which, in my opinion, is always the best part. This month's theme is "Slutember".

The first two pages highlight subscribers on social media (use the hashtag #myslutbox to have a chance to be featured), and a rundown of what's in the issue.

The next two pages urge you to share and follow SlutBox on social media and has a letter from MUVA herself. She's gearing up for the third annual SlutWalk which is a march (and festival) started by Amber Rose (Update - Amber Rose did not start SlutWalk) in response to a Toronto Police Officer telling a crowd of college women that if they wanted to avoid sexual assault they shouldn't "dress like sluts". Obviously, no matter how women dress, they should never be sexually assaulted. There is NEVER an excuse.

The next three spread go over most of the items found in this month's box.

Then, the rest of the items and this month's "Slut of the Month".

Here, they advertise this year's SlutWalk (October 6th) and how it all began with Slutember's installment of "Herstory".

The zine always has a wealth of information for those who believe in equal rights for all and here we have a handy guide called "Protesting 101". There's also a feature on three women to talk about "SlutWalk, power, sexuality, and sex work".

Wanda, a burlesque/drag performer and domestic violence sexual assault advocate, is interviewed first.

Next up is an artist, Mia.

And finally, Bhloe, explains why sex work is work and more about her chosen career, an escort.

The next two pages cover the month's Whoreoscopes.

And since we're in the back-to-school season, a guide on campus safety. Lots of good tips to apply to not just college students, but everyone on how to stay safe.

The back, reiterating the theme.

Demeter Fragrance Library Roll-on Perfume Oil in Amber, 0.33 oz. - Retail Value $12.00+ (Buy a 0.29 for $12.00)

The first item is an amply sized bottle of roll-on perfume oil from Demeter Fragrance Library. I love that they included the scent "Amber" since it's so fitting. Their website describes it: "Envelop yourself in our version of this exotic and alluring scent. Since antiquity, amber has been a valued perfume ingredient. Labeled an aphrodisiac with mystical powers, this warm, rich, honey-like, scent is gently dusted with earth and sensual oriental hints. Clean and aromatic it evokes the subtle, spicy warmth of twilight." While it's not quite my taste of scents, I think this is a great item that I can pass on to someone in my family who'd appreciate it more.

They've included a coupon code as well. I am obviously intrigued by "Kitten Fur".

SLUT Button - Listed Retail Value $7.99

While I don't believe this button is worth almost $8.00, I like buttons in general and one proclaiming to be a SLUT is perfect for the tone of this box and a great accessory if you're planning to go to the SlutWalk. There were two color variants and I received the pink-on-red version. It's a standard large button size at 2.25 inches across. It's also exclusive to this subscription.

Facial Forensics Green Tea Toner back of Facial Forensics Green Tea Toner

Facial Forensics Green Tea Toner, 4 oz. - Retail Value $22.00

I've tried a lot of toners in my day, but haven't come across a green tea one like the one above. It includes some of my favorite scents like peppermint and rosemary in addition to the green tea and vitamin C. This comes in a convenient spray bottle and is hyper-refreshing when misted on my face. This is definitely more of a morning spritz for me since it perks me up a bit but it's suggested to use after washing your face (twice a day) OR as a makeup setting spray. The 4-ounce bottle should last a good while as well.

Estate Cosmetics Dew Me Baked Highlighter in Exposed - Retail Value $10.00

Makeup products are inevitable in each SlutBox and this time MUVA has included a highlight powder. I've been experimenting with all different kinds of highlighters from creams to roll-ons to liquids and I'm glad to see a powder one here since a lot of the others can make my face a bit more oily. This can be easily dusted onto your upper cheekbones, nose, cupids bow, and below your eyebrows to bring a bit of glimmer to the areas you want to shine. Although I find this pink to be perfect for my super pale skin tone, I can see it being flattering on others as well.

CocoLube Spray & Play Personal Lubricant, 0.06 oz? - Buy a 1 oz bottle for $9.99

A lot of paperwork came with this small sample bottle of lube, and it just makes me wish it was larger. Full-size lube would be a great item to include in a subscription like this and looking at their website, would be a little more impressive to get a 1 oz branded bottle which only has a $2 higher retail value than what they're saying this sample bottle has. I digress. Very cool that it's derived from coconuts though! This has a really wonderful smell, as you can imagine and does feel quite slick on the skin while it's also... moisturizing? Haha, who knew a lube could be so healthy. 😉

Egyptian Magic Skin Cream open Egyptian Magic Skin Cream

Egyptian Magic Skin Cream, 0.25 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $3.25 (Buy a 2 oz jar for $26.00)

Again, a teensy sample size of a product. I do like getting some samples that can be great for purse or travel, but sometimes too many in a box just start feeling like clutter. I'm more of a quality over quantity type of gal, but I realize I may be in the minority in the sub box world. I've definitely seen this skin cream around but have never actually tried it. It has no smell which is great for those who are sensitive to fragrance. It has a slightly greasy feel at first but soaks in rather nicely in a short amount of time. I love that this is 100% all natural and made from clean ingredients like bee propolis, honey, olive oil, royal jelly, bee pollen, and beeswax. Those bees are working overtime for this one! Another thing I enjoy is that this is a multi-use product. As someone who desires fewer steps in her beauty routine, I love that this can also be used on my face, lips, and as a healing balm for scrapes or fresh tattoos.

Ms Betty's Original Bad-Ass Bitch Balm Ms Betty's Original Bad-Ass Bitch Balm Ms Betty's Original Bad-Ass Bitch Balm with cap off

Ms. Betty's Original Bad-Ass Bitch Balm - Retail Value $4.00

Ugh- lip balm has its place in some boxes, but this is not really one of them in my opinion. Lip balm can really feel like filler unless it's bringing something unique to the table or is in a more skin-care related subscription. I've gotten this same one in a past Smartass & Sass box, so even though I get how it fits in here (bad-ass bitch-adjacent), it makes me feel a little "meh" as an item. Lip balm- soooo sluttty? Curation aside, this balm is nice and minty and also made from all natural ingredients, so that's a win for me.

Esoteric Life Raw Brazilian Rose Quartz and Intention Card - Listed Retail Value $13.00

Okay, I'm sorry but I need to keep drinking a bit of haterade here. This item was supposed to ship in last month's box and an email went out saying that it would be coming in this month's instead because of shipping delays. That doesn't mean they should include it in the booklet AGAIN as an item. That just seems a little sketchy to me. Rant over- let's move on to this rose quartz. I do really love the cut of this baby and it's 2 inches tall so it makes for a nice little tower of power for my office crystal collection. Pricing can be all over the place and I feel like $13.00 might be a little high but I'll just let it slide. It's accompanied by an intentions card which is great so that you know the power it yields and how to use it in your life.

Mystery Vibe envelope Mystery Vibe $50 Gift Cardother side of Mystery Vibe $50 Gift Card

Mystery Vibe $50 Gift Card - Retail Value $50.00 (essentially only redeemable with $100 purchase)

Like some of the comments in the spoiler for the box, I first thought a $50 gift card was an awesome deal to get. Then I went to the website to find that they only offer one product which costs $150 (they have a pre-order up for another product but it's for men). If I was already going to buy it, I'd be excited to get a 33% discount, but this gift card is useless if I'm not ready to spend $100. It reminds me of those offers to get $300 off a hot tub I used to see on tv infomercials as a kid which I thought were a great deal until I learned how much hot tubs cost.  I'm still rather miffed as to why SlutBox hasn't included an adult toy already in the box and ready to go. Perhaps they don't feel it's inclusive enough, but a gift card to a larger store with a variety of products and values would've been better. The Crescendo looks like a cool idea since it's bendable and made of high-grade silicone, but I don't think I'm on the spot to drop the cash on it even with the gift card.

Bring It Up Instant Breast Lift, 2 pair - Estimated Retail Value $5.00 (Buy a pack of 8 for $20.00)

I hate wearing bras, but the fact of the matter is that they are helpful with keeping the girls up. These "breast lifts" can step in when I am not wanting to wear one, or if I were to don an outfit that needs me to go braless but when I still want some perky boobs. They're made of a super thin hypoallergenic material that's strong and really stays put. They were really easy to apply and did actually keep things high, but I'm not sure I'll be using these on a normal day.

Tenga Egg Stepper back of Tenga Egg Stepper

Tenga Egg Stepper - Retail Value $6.50

This single-use soft silicone "self-love" pod comes ready to go with lubrication a different series of bumps and grooves and can cater to anyone with a penis. After a lot of quizzical looks from me, I decided to call upon my beloved roommate who was up or the task. After giving it a test drive, his only real feedback is that it was really easy to use but seemed wasteful since it gets tossed out after using. Feel free to click the link in the product name above to get a better understanding of this egg works. 😉

The Brothers Apothecary Golden Dreams CBD Tea The Brothers Apothecary Golden Dreams CBD Tea Bag coming out of package

The Brothers Apothecary Golden Dream CBD Tea, 1 bag - Estimated Retail Value $5.00 (Buy 3 for $15.00)

I am still trying to understand CBD in this brave new world of pain management we are in. Many of my friends use it in various ways to help control their anxiety or chronic pain but it doesn't seem as readily available around these parts as others. The main takeaway is that this particular one is hemp-derived so although it comes from the cannabis family, is different than it's marijuana counterpart. Straight away, this tea tasted wonderful due to it being packed with awesome things like chamomile, spearmint, orange peel, lemongrass, rose petals, linden leaf, blackberry leaf, hawthorn berry, and 52.81 mg of hemp-derived CBD. It's supposed to promote restfulness so this would be a great evening tea to swap out your sleepytime for if you need help calming down that brain that keeps you up at night. I would definitely like to try more of this to see how it would affect me since I wasn't able to get a clear idea drinking just a little in the middle of the day. This sounds like a great way to dip a toe into CBD without having to take drops of oil or by way of a vaporizer.

Bring It Up Double Talk Scented Messages From the Heart Pasties - Listed Retail Value $10.00

More pasties this month, only they are scented (like grape, I think?) and have the message "I'm Sexy and I Know It" on each. These come from the same company that makes the breast lift patches although I don't see these listed ont heir site. I personally wouldn't rock these just because scented pasties just don't make practical sense to me (although I get that these are supposed to be practical) but kudos to those who will have fun with them!

SlutBox What to do if you're stopped by the police pocket guide back of SlutBox What to do if you're stopped by the police pocket guide

SlutBox What To Do If You're Stopped By The Police Pocket Guide

There's no monetary value attached to this last item but it is listed in the zine instead of just included as a bonus piece of literature. I really love the idea of this since I personally have no idea what my rights are in the event I am confronted by the police in various situations. I do take note of my privilege in realizing that I may not even think that this is something I should be equipped with, but not everyone has that luxury. The info in the zine suggests keeping this in your bag or glove compartment of your car so it's handy. This is also great info to share or repost on social media to spread the word.

Verdict: SlutBox sent me a whole lot of items that kind of seemed like filler this month. Although I did get a few full-size items, many seemed (like last month) that they were just free samples with a very very loose theme. This is a box for those who love getting a lot of small things to try instead of a few bigger ticket items. The gift card and listing the rose quartz again in this box definitely rubbed me the wrong way and as always, a lot of their listed values were inflated. All in all- this is kind of a big shrug to me. I think their content is excellent, but the products included fall flat when there is so much potential.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, October will be your first delivery.

From SlutBox:

SlutBox ships once per month, around the beginning to middle of the month. If you subscribed on or before the last day of the month, you will receive the following month's box with our regular shipment (around the beginning to middle of the month). If you subscribed after the 1st, your first box will ship the following calendar month, unless otherwise stated.*

SlutBox is subject to availability and all boxes are limited edition.

*NOTE: If you subscribed after our cutoff, you may have a chance to be included in a second shipment (quantities limited and opportunity for second shipment is not guaranteed for all members). Members who are included in our second shipment will be renewed on the 20th of the month, in advance of the next shipment.

If you're confused about when to expect your first box, submit a request or email us at [email protected].

Value Breakdown: At $29.99 for the cost of this box and an estimated retail value of $85.74, that means you are paying approximately $2.73 for each of the 11 items. I'm not counting the gift card since you have to spend $100 to use it, the rose quartz which was supposed to be included in last month's box, or the "if you get stopped" card that has no monetary value attached. The lubricant sample was also so small that I had a hard time calculating a value for it but included it as an item.

I just subbed for this box to get the free PENGUIN. It shipped separately, in fact I just got it in the mail tonight. I’ll get the January box when they ship. depending on what’s in it, I may or may not cancel. I’m glad she’s getting some collaborative help with this box from an LGBTQ publication, and I hope it’s a new start for this box to be consistently good… it’s a great concept and idea, but it needs some tweaking for sure.

Again a very underwhelming box. That gift card is worthless and a cheap pin?? Not to mention a male toy? I’m pretty sure men are not subscribing to this box.

J

I think that is a very sexist and transphobic thing to say. The fact is that not all women have a vagina……

Reply ButtonReply

Steph

I will never be able to take this box seriously after they included, not once but twice, the Lelo Hex condoms. I’m the one who sent the email about how dangerous they are (thank you so much for updating the review with the info!) I messaged Slutbox about it when the condoms were first included, but obviously, they didn’t listen/care since the condoms were in the box again. Lelo has also had sexist campaigns, and have had a known domestic abuser as their spokesperson.

It’s clear Slutbox doesn’t do much research on the products they add to the box, though their pamphlets and zines seem to be done really well. They need to step back, look at what customers actually want in their boxes, and then research the companies they plan to include.

Sparklemotion

She’s a spokeswoman for Lelo herself so I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep appearing in the box…

What a rip off. And the whole “women are oppressed in first world countries” thing is a huge turn off.

Reply ButtonReply

Steph

While women have more rights in most of western society than some other areas of the world, there is still a lot to be done until we reach true equality.

Take a look at rape and assault statistics. Take a look at what women of colour and LGBTQ+ women deal with on a daily basis. Take a look at the fact women are still paid less on average than men. Take a look that many women do not have access to birth control and reproductive healthcare. And, as Ragan said, pay attention to the #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport hashtags.

The evidence of oppression is there.

Kelly Weber

Well saif. Thank you

Zara

I live in a different world than Katie. I’m working class and reside in a community with people from all over, of all different races. Trust me, first world or not, the women I know face oppression often. Usually from people with Katie’s mindset.

Ragan

It’s true though. Have you been paying attention to the Supreme Court nominee hearings or the #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport hashtags on social media? I don’t subscribe to this box but if issues regarding gender equality are brought before a wider audience, that is something I support.

I may be accused of slut shaming here, but I can’t get behind Mia’s art of sexualizing children. I don’t have problems with most kinks, but this one feels wrong and dangerous.

Reply ButtonReply

Anon

I can’t find any artwork of her’s that appears to depict children being sexualized. Do you have a reference to where more of her work is located? I’m just wondering if you’re confusing dollification or DD/lg for something depicting minors, when that’s not at all what they’re about. On her Insta there’s a pic of her that looks like dollification style makeup.

I appreciate the honest review. They went with a bold, attention grabbing name and aren’t delivering on it. I bought a couple of those eggs as a gag v-day gift for a male friend years ago and he thought they were more hassle/cost than what they were worth.
