I Was Told There’d Be Cake Essays By Sloane Crosley - Retail Value $16 (found on sale here for $14.40)

A series of essays from the author that was uninspiring to me, from reading about her toy pony collection that she purposefully left under the seat on the N train subway in New York to her adventures of camp and getting lice was a miss for me. Not every book that is sent will be a hit, but I know subscribers will be pleased with the return of a book. Hopefully, the other essays will be a little more intriguing.

‘Wry, hilarious, and profoundly genuine, Sloane Crosley's debut collection of literary essays is a celebration of fallibility and haplessness in all their glory.  The New York Times bestseller that both captured and influenced a generation.”

“From despoiling an exhibit at the Natural History Museum to provoking the ire of her first boss to siccing the cops on her mysterious neighbor, Crosley can do no right despite the best of intentions -- or perhaps because of them. Together, these essays create a startlingly funny and revealing portrait of a complex and utterly recognizable character who aims for the stars but hits the ceiling, and the inimitable city that has helped shape who she is. I Was Told There'd Be Cake introduces a strikingly original voice, chronicling the struggles and unexpected beauty of modern urban life.”

Laritzy Cosmetics Dew Pot - Retail Value $20.00

I’m not much of a makeup person so when I get products such as these; I’m not very excited unless its mascara, lipstick, or lip gloss. I received the shade glory a warm, coppery gold color. I'm sure for the makeup lovers out there this will be a hit.

From Laritzy Cosmetics:

Loaded with ultrafine shimmer, this smooth, blendable highlighter will keep you dewy all day. Designed to enhance all skin tones, this effortless formula can be used wherever you want an extra touch of light. Apply a little for a subtle sheen finish or build it up for a killer glow.

OhK! Coconut Water Fibre Face Mask - Retail Value $15.71 (found here for $12.05)

My favorite beauty ritual is facial sheet mask so whenever I receive them, I’m a happy camper. I received a set of three. The sheet mask was thin but sturdy and adhered to my face, and there was excess essence from the mask after I took it off which I massaged into my skin. It left my skin smooth and hydrated.

PopChips Potato Ridges in Tangy Barbeque, 0.8oz - Listed Value $2.50

These chips were tangy, sweet, crunchy and oh so delicious. The chips are popped not fried, no added preservatives, flavors, and synthetic dyes. The small bag is 100 calories. The chips weren’t greasy and have a bold flavor that I would expect in bbq chips.

Himalayan Gold Butter Flavored Coconut Oil Popcorn, 0.46oz - Listed Value $2.50

This popcorn is delicious, a perfect combination of butter and salt. The small bag is 40 calories of organic ingredients, air-popped popcorn, Himalayan pink salt, organic coconut oil, and organic botanical extracts (their plant-based alternative to butter), that makes this the best popcorn I have had.

Gemelli Izzy Bracelet Set in Pink – Retail Value $72.00

I never get tired of receiving jewelry in this subscription box. This bracelet set includes two stretchy bracelets with small and medium beads with a cream tassel on the smaller beaded bracelet. The colors are neutral as to pair with most of my outfits. However, the price seems steep for the set.

singlesswag turban

Headbands of Hope Heather Tube Turban - Retail Value $16.85

I love wearing head wraps, and this darkly patterned turban is perfect for me. The turban is 100% polyester, 10” wide across and 20” high tall, it stretches to fit over my head, and style the way I choose. For every headband sold, one is donated to a child with cancer. Check here to see how this headband can be styled.

Pūrlisse Watermelon Energizing Aqua Balm, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $45.00

This gel-cream aqua balm intends to energize, refresh, and soothe my skin while providing hydration. The watermelon moisturizes my skin; the aloe vera helps reduce inflammation, the white tea protects my skin from cellular damage, and the cucumber soothes and firms my skin. I cleansed my face with their Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Cleansing Milk, its recommended to cleanse with this first (I already had this cleanser from a previous subscription box and hadn’t opened it yet) and after cleansing, I applied the aqua balm. The aqua balm is lightweight, moisturizing, and my skin soaked it up. It wasn’t greasy, and it has a fruity smell. This product is free of parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, and animal cruelty. Perfect for all skin types.

VerdictThe September SinglesSwag box was well received and had an assortment of goodies for my enjoyment which included two accessory items, products for my face, the return of their yummy snacks, as well as their much-anticipated books. This month’s box has a value of $190.56, that’s incredible for a $40.00 box! Hands down my favorite women’s sub!

The tassel on my bracelet broke within one day, fraying everywhere. The retail vale for that bracelet set was way, way overpriced. Poor craftsmanship!

Thanks Nich for the review! Last month, I subscribed to SinglesSwag and OnyxBOX based on your past reviews and I love them both.

My favorites from this box are the Pūrlisse Watermelon Energizing Aqua Balm, Laritzy Dew Pot (I received Utopia, a warm rose gold) and the Headbands of Hope Tube Turban. I received a Headbands of Hope Tube Turban in a Yogi Surprise box last year and I love how it keeps my hair flat at night.

I agree the retail value for the bracelet set is a bit steep but it is beautiful and the beads appear to be of pretty high quality. But with the 30% discount offered last month I think it’s definitely worth the price of the box – especially if you got the Petite version. And I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I like the headband. I’m actually wearing it now and am even thinking about subscribing to Headbands of Hope. I wear a scrunchie almost everyday around the house but the headband is actually more comfortable and looks much better.

Thanks for showing what the book looks like inside! The typeface and format is really important to me – it makes a difference as to whether I’ll actually read the book. Many times I’ve passed on books with tiny crowded type.

Carrie

Is the book back for good? If so, Singles Swag is back on the re-sub list for me.

I was not excited at the beginning by the spoilers but I ended up really enjoying this box. I did not like the book, I wish they would add fiction from time to time.

I heard the Pony story on NPR just a few weeks ago. It was wonderful.
I would love to swap for this book!

I have the book if you’re interested! 🙂

I liked most of my box this month. The popcorn is the best ever! The Aqua Balm is great for me to put on prior to heading out to the gym(no make-up for that). I won’t use the highlighter pot. I haven’t looked at the book yet. I am happy that the bracelets fit just right. Some of these stretchy ones have been too tight on my average wrists.
