The theme for Bokksu's November 2018 box is "Tea Story":
Let us tell you the story of Japanese tea! Known for having some of the best tea in the world, Japan has a distinctive tea culture that has captured the hearts of people worldwide. Tea in Japan originated in the 9th century by Buddhist monks as a religious practice. Its oldest form came from China as brick tea, which was ground to a powder and whisked with hot water (sound familiar? It's matcha!) As production expanded and prices dropped, tea grew in popularity with the Japanese nobility, warrior classes, and eventually the common people. Until recently, tea wasn't consumed for pleasure but prized for its purported medicinal qualities. Loose leaf tea didn't even exist in Japan until the 17th century. Since then, the Japanese love for tea has flourished, giving way to countless varieties, blends, and applications. This box celebrates the place of tea in modern Japan, as a beloved beverage to pair with sweet or savory treats as well as an ingredient in delicious desserts. We hope you enjoy our chapter of Japan's tea story.
