Deep Readers Club September 2018 “Penitent” Review
Here is the info sheet detailing the products included.
Waiting for Eden by Elliot Ackerman – Retail Value $22.95 (found here for $15.28)
This is a brand new novel that was released on September 25, 2018, and I love that Deep Readers Club sent us a book fresh hot off the press. I appreciate that it is a hardcover (also, how stunning is the rainbow covers?), but I was a little mystified to see a ripped page when I opened up the book. Luckily, it doesn't actually affect anything, and I quickly dived in. Since this is a pretty short book at 192 pages I ended up finishing it in one sitting, and I have to say Elliot Ackerman has some lovely prose. There is nothing pretentious about the book- the words used and the emotions described are easy to understand and envision, and yet I was thoroughly pulled into Eden's world. Eden was a soldier who was the "most wounded warrior to survive the two wars," and you experience his point of view as well as the view of the best friend who didn't make it out of the same bomb that burned Eden, as well as Eden's wife. The three are interconnected in ways you learn throughout the story, and my only complaint is that the ending wasn't my favorite—it felt unfinished. That was definitely the intention of the author, so now I am left with my thoughts about everything I just read and what it all means. I guess that means Deep Readers Club is doing their job!
Typologie Paper Co. “Understanding” Definition Print, 5” x 7” - Estimated Value $8
We get a different definition every month, and my opinion hasn’t really changed. I’ll be honest and admit that it’s not my favorite thing about this subscription, but I don’t think anyone is subscribing to this box specifically for the print. This isn’t a big-ticket item, so, to me, it is just something to neatly pile on my desk because I don’t want to throw it away but I also don’t have a use for it.
Scented Essentials Candle in Mountain Rain, 7 oz – Estimated Value $12
I love the smell of rain and this candle nails that scent perfectly! It is light, refreshing, and is the perfect scent to having burning while I cozy up with a good book and a cup of tea.
Fly Paper Products Wooden Bookmark - Retail Value $5.95
What a neat bookmark! It is 100% made of wood, but it is still super thin- if I didn’t know better I would say it could be cardstock! This is a gorgeous and environmentally friendly way to mark my place in my book.
Harney & Sons Vanilla Comoro Tea, 5 sachets – Retail Value $4
I am currently living my best caffeine-free life, so I am stoked that this is a decaffeinated black tea! The vanilla flavor is subtle but present, and while it is enjoyable I think a sugar cube would bring the vanilla flavor to life and make it really shine. I love these tagalong tins for storing tea, too- they are perfect for keeping in my purses and always having good quality tea on hand. This is especially important when the tea sold at the law center is severely lacking.
The Verdict: This was such a good month by the Deep Readers Club! I enjoyed the book, and I also really liked the candle, bookmark, and tea! I understand that the typology print has become a bit of their signature, but that is the only thing I would change about this box—it just doesn’t do anything for me. That small gripe aside, if you’re looking for a good book that will make you think I definitely recommend waiting for Eden! Value-wise, this box has a total value of $52.90, which is a little more than the cost of the box plus shipping. You’re really paying for the curation with this box, as the values are never much higher than the cost of the box itself.
SPOILER: October’s theme is Bravery, and the book will be Killing Commendatore, a new release by Haruki Marukami.
