Gentleman's Box October 2018 "Mystery Murderer" Review
The theme this month is ‘Mystery Murderer’. I hoped that would refer to someone who murders mysteries by solving them rather than someone who commits murders mysteriously, as one of those is a gentlemanly aspiration and the other is most assuredly not. However, it actually refers to an undisclosed member of the cast of Clue, whose identity you are encouraged to guess on their website to win a premium box.
The booklet is very informative, featuring detailed descriptions and high-quality color photos of each item in the box as well as a personal message from Alleigh, the Gentleman’s Box content creator. There a few other fun things in the booklet too, like a mad-libs page, a member profile and a deal of the month (this month it’s on J. Ciro watches and cufflinks).
Also included is a flyer for Tastingroom.com which allows you to save $30 on a wine tasting kit.
Kurt Mayo Tie - Listed Value $40
I love a woven tie! It adds extra detail and texture to a formal outfit, which can often be sorely needed when dressing for a swanky party. The mustard color (hint hint!) pops very nicely against blues and neutral greys. I’d say this was a little too fancy and colorful for normal office attire, but it’d be perfect for a special occasion.
Circle Socks - Listed Value $15
These are great quality (75% Cotton, 22% Polyester, 3% Elastic) socks with the pattern going all the way to the toe. According to the booklet, the design on these is supposed to be a lightning bolt but it looks like lots of little staplers that are bent backward to be refilled. These also feature prominent mustard tones (hint hint) that offset the grey and white making for some nice 60’s style flair.
Lord of Ties Lapel Pin - Listed Value $20
I really like this and it’s not something I would ever think to buy on purpose! It slots neatly into the buttonhole on any suit jacket lapel and would be a great way to signal your identity to a blind date. It both compliments the included tie and can add the intended texture and pop in the tie’s absence if both seems like too much of that color.
Travelling Gentleman’s Boutique Tie Bar - Listed Value $25
A quirky little clip that adds another nice playful detail to a formal outfit. It doesn’t quite reach all the way across the tie but has more than enough grip on the shirt placket to hold it in place.
Beeyardo Shaving Cream
Not too strong smelling and not harsh on my skin, this has been a pleasure to shave with! A little goes a long way so this tiny sample size will probably last for weeks.
Smartypants Gummies - Buy a 30-day supply for $29.66
Two soft gummy vitamin candies from the ‘Men’s Complete’ collection. They’re chewable and easy to eat, but while they’re supposed to taste of lemon creme, blueberry and blackberry they also have that strong oily taste that everything loaded with omega 3 has. I’m sure they’d be very good for my skin if I was able to take them consistently, a sample size of two doesn’t allow me to test that though.
Verdict: This month’s theme was a little heavy-handed for me (can you guess who all the mustard colored things refer to?) and the associated color a little garish, but the items in this box are all high quality and of a particular style that can just as easily be used in unthemed situations, such as taking your mother for a nice meal, or going to see a friend in a play like a gentleman should.
Not including the samples, this month's value totals $100. The tie alone is worth more than the $25 monthly fee so this is a very good value box. Great for building up a collection of sharp looking accessories for all occasions!
