Horror Pack August 2018 Review
Hangman (2016) - Retail Value $24.99 (found on sale here for $9.81)
Hangman is a found footage film that details a family that is stalked by a man that breaks into their home while on vacation. As the family returns from vacation they arrive to their home having been ransacked. They assume that the intruder has left, but they are gravely wrong. Hangman is suspenseful and incredibly terrifying. Though this movie is not presenting anything groundbreaking in the found footage horror genre, it still will manages to leave you unsettled and checking every inch of your house for uninvited guests. I speak from experience!
Cult of Chucky (2017) - Retail Value $14.92 (found on sale here for $9.15)
Chucky has returned and he has brought a cult of… himself. This movie brings back Nica (played by Fiona Dourif, daughter of Brad Dourif that voices Chucky), from Curse of Chucky, who has been convinced by her doctor that she killed her family and that Chucky was a manifestation of her psychosis. She is transferred to a medium security psychiatric hospital…and that is where everything goes straight to h-e-double hockey sticks. Alex Vincent (Andy Barclay) and Jennifer Tilly (Tiffany Valentine) reprise their roles from previous Chucky movies as well. This is the seventh movie in the series and it is a hilarious, self-spoofing, good time of a slasher film. I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Chucky movie!
Mexico Barbaro (2014) - Retail Value $12.99
Mexico Barbaro a movie that is broken into eight chapters which are directed by eight different Mexican directors. Each story brings to life tales about boogeymen, ghosts, Monsters, Aztec sacrifices, and Dia de Muertos. I was excited to view this movie, but the acting was poor in most of the vignettes and some of the stories were hard to follow. I may give it another viewing, but not in the immediate future.
Unfriended (2014) - Retail Value $9.19
Finally, we have Unfriended, which is another film that uses the found footage genre, but with a twist: the point of view is filmed from the computer screen of one of the teen characters. A group of teen friends are spending a casual night online chatting when they come to find an uninvited user on their chat they can’t seem to shake. The horror movie explores loyalty, revenge, and internet bullying in modern times. I found it entertaining, but predictable. Still, it is well worth a viewing.
Verdict: This month’s Horror Pack selections were far more favorable and enjoyable than the July selections. I enjoyed 3 of the 4 movies: Hangman was terrifyingly suspenseful, Curse of Chucky was gory and hilarious, and Unfriended was creepy and entertaining. I am going to give Mexico Barbaro another chance, but at this time I am indifferent about that movie. Overall, getting four movies with a total retail value of $62.09 for the cost of $24.99 is a dang good deal, so I can’t complain!

Value Breakdown: This box costs me $24.99 with free shipping which means that each of the movies would cost $6.25 a piece roughly. If I were to buy these movies individually, my calculations come up to $62.09 in total retail value.
