Rescue Box is a subscription box for dogs or cats. For dogs, choose from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). This is a review of the large dog box. For reference, my dog Nyx is an 84-pound Rottweiler. Rescue box is associated with Greater Good (the folks who brought you The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site, and more) and your purchase of a subscription will help provide food and vaccines to shelter pets!

Rescue Box October 2018 Review

This box is pretty reliably holiday-themed in months where there is a major holiday occurring. However, due to a change in billing information, I’m pretty sure I ended up with a welcome box this month:

Usually, there is an information card with a rescue pet story on one side and a list of items on the other, though they’ve been inconsistent about that lately. This time I received a card with more information about Rescue Box’s charity efforts.

Rescue box october 2018 - Tuff Ball Top View

Tuff Ball – Retail Value $7.88

Dogs love tennis balls, right? Nyx does, anyway. Her favorite activities are (1) trying to stuff three tennis balls in her mouth at once and (2) peeling off the green coating. This one is too large to stuff more than one in her mouth but it is a good size for a large-breed dog and it seems durable so far.

Rescue box october 2018 - Bully Sticks Top View

Bully Sticks (3 count) – Retail Value $12

$12 seems a bit steep for three bully sticks (though shipping is free as well, and a portion of every purchase goes to charity). But this is what Rescue Box is selling them for. These are supposed to be low-odor when chewed. These are sourced from South American cattle, which were raised without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones. So there is something to be said for the source of these, as well.

Rescue box october 2018 - Outward Hound Firehose Fetch Front View

Outward Hound Firehose Fetch – Retail Value $10

There are six related items on the product page for this one so I am not 100% certain I have chosen the correct one in terms of pricing. This is supposed to be super durable. I do think the fire hose part is tough, but it is covered by an outer canvas that Nyx put a hole in within a day. Well, at least she had fun while it lasted.

Rescue box october 2018 - Hyper Pet Flippy Flopper Top View

Hyper Pet Flippy Flopper – Retail Value $6.96

This is a Frisbee-style toy but the middle part is a flexible fabric instead of hard plastic. Nyx doesn’t understand Frisbees (or flying discs, or whatever you want to call them) so she preferred to chew on this instead. Nyx did manage to destroy this, but of course, that was with severe misuse.

Rescue box october 2018 - Rescue Box Tumbler Front View

Rescue Box Tumbler – Retail Value $13

This comes at a handy time. I am trying to make more tea at work and sometimes I like to drink it iced. So I take hot tea and pour it over ice in tumblers like this. (Also it was time for a new tumbler, they don’t last forever.) The insulation here is good, I left some ice for a few hours and a few pieces were mostly left later on.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the firehose toy.

Verdict: I calculated a total value of $49.84 for the October Rescue Box (or welcome box, as the case may have it). I was very happy to see three toys since Nyx has so many dietary issues, and I appreciate getting the tumbler because I needed one and now I don’t have to buy one.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This may be a welcome box in which case you would receive the same one (based on dog size). Otherwise, your first box would be November’s.

Value Breakdown: At a box price of $29.95, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Ball $4.74
  • Bully sticks $7.21
  • Firehose toy $6.01
  • Flying disc toy $4.18
  • Tumbler $7.81
