Frank And Oak Style Plan Winter Coat & T-Shirt Review November 2018
When you first sign up for this subscription, you fill out a quick style profile that captures your sizing preferences and your sense of style. (Choose from Casual, Classic, and Creative). Then, you can pick whether you'd like a monthly or a bi-monthly plan and set your budget for each box (under $150 or $150+).
Before your box ships, you get an email inviting you to hop in and preview your order. The page that opens up has about 12 products total on the page. The three products currently set to ship in the order are at the top of the page and marked with green check marks. The top section of the page includes items that have been picked based on your preferences, but recently, Frank and Oak added a "Featured" section at the bottom of the selection page that highlights some new/trending items that you can pick from, as well.
The plan includes three items, but you can choose more or less than three if you'd like. This month, I picked only two, since one of the items was on the pricey side. More specifically, I picked an essential black teee and (drumroll please...) a puffer coat from Frank and Oak's brand new outerwear line! It's one of the more expensive coats I've picked out for myself, but with so many awesome features, it was impossible to pass up. Let's check it out!
The Explorer Winter Puffer Jacket with Recycled 3M Thinsulate in Black, Size Medium - Retail Value $199.00, Member Price $170.00
I am SO in love with this jacket!!! As a reminder, Frank and Oak is a Canadian-based company, so they've created outerwear options with the chilly Canadian climate in mind. Winters in Pittsburgh aren't too friendly either, so this well-insulated look is just what the doctor ordered.
There are a lot of thoughtful details in this jacket. First and foremost, the fabric.
One of my favorite things about Frank and Oak is how they strive to make more sustainable, eco-friendly products. Both the outer shell and featherless down filler of this jacket feature recycled polyester. (The shell is 39% recycled polyester and 61% polyester and the filling is 5% recycled polyester and 25% polyester.) Not only are the materials a little more environmentally friendly than lots of coats I've seen in department stores lately—they're also unbelievably lightweight and warm as ever. Oh, did I mention the shell is water-resistant, too?!
There's a zipper and a flap with snaps, snap-shut pockets for chilly hands, hefty stretch fabric at the wrists to keep the cold out, and drawstrings around the hips for added snug factor.
My favorite part is the high neckline and removable hood! It's just as warm and light as the rest of the jacket, and it fits my head really nicely. (It's not too tight or so big that it lets the wind blow in.)
One quirky thing about this jacket is that it can double as a pillow! This drawstring bag was secured on a little loop inside the chest of the jacket when I took it out of the box. One side of the bag is a soft, comfy jersey, while the other is made from the same black swishy fabric as the jacket.
It takes a little squishing, but eventually, the jacket packs down into this bag, so that it can act as a pillow in a pinch. Not sure where I'd use this pillow—it might come in handy in a pinch at the drive-in. Or maybe I'll bring it camping/traveling during the not-so-chilly seasons. Either way, the bag sure is nice for storage.
The Boy Tee in True Black, Size Medium - Retail Value $24.50, Listed Value $19.50
So this tee is a dream. The fit is EXACTLY how I wish all t-shirts fit—a prim, yet not too-close crew neck, sleeves that don't feel too short nor too long, and a tailored, but not tight cut through the body. The 100% cotton fabric is light, breezy, and super soft. It's not terribly thick, so there's not the stiffness that you find in some cotton tees. I want this cut in every color!
Verdict: I'm so smitten with Frank and Oak! The Styling Plan is an awesome way to discover new products without having to shop their entire site. Instead, I get a curated set of items that fit my personal style and size requirements. I do like that I get to choose within those options, too—it's a nice mix of helpful styling and just enough control to make sure I get something I'm truly excited about. And wow! That jacket is perfect for me! I love the timeless, functional style—it's more of an investment piece, but it should see me through many many winters. (It comes in a few other awesome colors if black isn't quite your thing. AND they make a few full-length styles that look next-level cozy.) The pricing is right around what I'd expect at somewhere like the Gap or Macy's, but unlike stores at the mall, the Style Plan gives me shopping help and sustainable styles that I really appreciate!
To Wrap Up:
Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, each box is customized based on your style plan. Under the new $25 styling fee plan, boxes ship automatically on the 1st of the month, and you can log in 2 days before shipment to add or remove items or skip the month altogether. That said, you can still follow the product links above to shop these items for yourself from their site catalog!
New Deal: Use this link to get your first box with no styling fee!
Value Breakdown: The member's price for the two items I received this month is $189.50. At retail, the clothes I got would have cost $223.50. If I decide to return all the items, I will pay the $25 styling fee and will be refunded the remaining amount, but I can keep any one item at the discounted price and no styling fee will be charged.
