Horror Pack September 2018 Review
A Dark Song (2017)—Retail Value $17.99
A bereaved mother and isolated occultist combine forces to find revenge, but find terror and themselves instead. This movie isn’t necessarily scary, but intense and rather emotionally charged. It is well worth a viewing.
Against the Night (2017)—Retail Value Unavailable; Horror Pack Exclusive Release
Against the Night is riddled with horror movie clichés, tropes, and bad acting you find in a variety of other low budget horror movies. In the film, a group of friends are bribed by another friend to film a ghost hunting reality segment in a haunted prison ( the real Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia, PA). You know from that sentence alone that this foreshadows only bad things to come. The cast is relatively unknown excluding Frank Whaley aka Brett from Pulp Fiction!
Claude Rain’s The Invisible Man (1933)—Retail Value $19.98
I was rather pleased to see this classic Universal Monsters movie, The Invisible Man, included in this month’s Horror Pack! This movie had some of the most groundbreaking special effects of its time. The movie details the struggles and decline of chemist, Dr. Jack Griffin. Griffin tragically becomes invisible after running tests on a drug called monocane and realizes what a blessing and a curse it is to be unseen. This dark classic stars Claude Rain in the titular character role and Gloria Stuart (aka old Rose from Titanic) as his fiancee!
The Bye Bye Man (2017)—Retail Value $19.99
The Bye Bye Man presents the relevantly eternal question: what makes us commit the atrocities we do against one another? Could it also be a who rather than a what that inspires us to harm one another? In this case, it is the parasitic evil known as The Bye Bye Man that is responsible for heinously murderous acts. The movie has some disturbingly suspenseful parts but also relies on derivative clichés from other horror movies. Regardless, my cousin and I enjoyed this film for what it was worth the viewing!
Verdict: This month’s Horror Pack selections were a wild mix of classics like The Invisible Man, indie slasher Against the Night, powerful occult horror from A Dark Song, and big budget gory thrillers with The Bye Bye Man! I enjoyed each movie in some capacity and appreciated being introduced to so many new to me films and also to be able to own an oldie, but a goodie like The Invisible Man. I only have the values for three of the movies, and they total to $57.96 and the subscription itself is $24.99! Not bad at all!
