Irish Taste Club October 2018 Review
Irish Taste Club includes an information sheet that provides tidbits about each product and its producer. There is also a special note from the owners, Pauline and Tom. The friendly, conversational tone of the info sheet was very sweet! It was easy to feel a connection to everyone involved in making this box come together.
The Big Red Kitchen Brown Soda Bread Mix, 300g - Retail Value $3.59 (€2.95)
This twine-tied package was so cute! I knew I had to make the soda bread first, so I’d have a vehicle for all the jam, honey, and sauces that came in the box. It was easy enough to whip together; I just combined the bread mix with 1 and 1/4 cups of milk and one egg. While it was baking, my apartment smelled so heavenly. It was nice and crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside. Hearty, textured, and mild, it was really enjoyable. I was excited to spread some of this month’s many toppings over it. More on those later. As the bread baked, I cracked into the other treats.
On the info sheet, Pauline and Tom challenge the reader to find a nicer macaroon anywhere in the world, and you know what? I don’t think I can. These macaroon bars were so GOOD! I can only describe them as a gourmet version of Samoas Girl Scout cookies. Sweet chocolate, a little bit of rice crisp, and lovely coconut—these were to die for. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited over sweets!
West Cork Biscuit Company Baci Di Dama, 175g - Retail Value $5.53 (€4.55)
“Baci Di Dama” translates to “lady’s kisses” in Italian. Crafted from locally-sourced ingredients and produced in small batches, these little cookies promised a light almond flavor and a center of dark Belgian chocolate. They definitely delivered! The cookie itself had a nice chew to it while still being light and a little crumbly, and the Belgian chocolate center was deliciously decadent. I loved these, and if I don’t immediately scarf down the entire box, then I’ll excitedly share them with friends.
Àine Handmade Hot Chocolate Swirl Stick, 40g - Retail Value $2.06 (€1.70)
What a fun take on hot chocolate! Instead of a brown mystery powder, this chocolate swirl stick combines fresh, pure, and natural ingredients like Irish butter and cream, as well as the best cocoa solids in the world. Àine’s Handmade Chocolate has also won no less than 21 Great Taste Awards (essentially the Oscars of the food industry). I couldn’t wait to try this. After warming 3/4 cup (200ml) of milk on the stove, I poured the milk into my Mister Rogers mug, and let the swirling begin. It felt so gourmet to move the stick around and watch the hot chocolate appear. It took a few minutes for all of the chocolate to melt, but it was worth the wait. Another winner! I would definitely purchase these sticks in bulk, with most to give as gifts to loved ones, and a few to keep for myself. So, so good.
The Big Red Kitchen Salted Butterscotch Sauce, 220g - Retail Value $5.47 (€4.50)
Wow, this sauce was incredible. I tested a tiny bit from the knife I used to spread on the soda bread before eating those two things together, and it about knocked my socks off. You know when a cartoon character falls in love, and their eyes turn into hearts and blow out of their head? Yeah, that was me with this sauce. It’s sweet, rich, and a true butterscotch dream. Plus, it was great on the soda bread. You can really tell it was made with a lot of love and care. The hits really do keep coming with this box!
Mileeven Raspberry & Irish Poitin Preserve, 225g - Retail Value $8.99
This was so fresh and full of flavor! Once again, very delicious on the soda bread. I wasn’t sure what poitin was, so a quick search revealed it’s a traditional distilled Irish beverage. Berries and booze? Count me in.
Mileeven Pure Honey, 340g - Retail Value $4.37 (€3.59)
Of all the treats in this month’s box, I was most excited by this pure honey. Truth be told, I’m a honey fiend. It had a nice, natural sweetness that made it my favorite topping for the soda bread. The jar was also quite large and will last a long time, so I’m very happy to add it to my pantry!
Verdict: Irish Taste Club far exceeded my expectations! I had no idea there was so much culinary talent in Ireland, and it was an absolute pleasure to explore the craft behind each artisan product. This box would make for an incredible gift, as the items are very high quality, and Irish Taste Club offers the convenience of a one-time box purchase. The info sheet had such a charming sense of humor and was a wonderful, personable guide for introducing each product. It was difficult to pick a favorite, but for the sake of review, I’ll go with the Ballyshiel macaroon bars and the salted butterscotch sauce. Overall, I loved my time with Irish Taste Club, and would definitely recommend it.

Value Breakdown: This box is $49 a month with free shipping. I received a total of seven items, which is an average of $7. For the superb quality and amazing taste of each, I think it’s totally worth it, especially considering the huge jar of specialty honey that’s now hanging out in my pantry.
