Kiwi Crate Crystal Chemistry Tree November 2018 Review
We received a nice color booklet full of information and instructions for our project with their social media information on the back. I appreciate that they tell you what you should find in your crate which is helpful!
They included two pages of scientific information related to our project which I found to be very educational.
As per usual with KiwiCo., the directions are clear, detailed and incredibly easy to follow due to the step by step instructions and pictures.
First, we got out all of our materials and a few things from home like scrap paper, scissors and a cup of water.
The base for our tree consisted of this small silver bucket and plastic liner. We used a foam circle sticker in between the two to hold them together.
Next, we wrapped our festive red ribbon around the bucket and secured it using tiny foam square stickers, then I cut off the excess ribbon.
We received two thin cardboard pieces for our tree. All I had to do was slide them together and then I placed them into the base making sure to press the bottom of the tree against the bottom of our bucket to keep it secure.
We received a nice thick piece of felt with cute cutouts on it to use as our tree skirt. I placed our tree in the center and we were ready to decorate.
My daughter could easily do the next part which was to peel off the red felt circles and add them to our little ornament shapes and hang them on the tree for our decorations.
Then I twisted our little silver pipe cleaners together to form a star. There was even a hole at the top of the tree for us to thread our star through to stand it up.
Now that our tree was decorated, we added this bottle of blueing agent to our bucket. The spout made it easy to pour it in without making a mess.
Next, we added our ammonia which was topped with a child safety lid. They included a fun fact that even though our bottle of ammonia was mostly water, ammonia is so strong smelling that just a tiny bit can create a big stink, and it certainly did!
The next step was to add our packet of salt to the mixture.
They included a pipette for us to use to squirt our mixture on the tree trunk. I opted to do this part by myself since my kiddos are younger, but I did appreciate that there was a step where they had them practice squeezing water into and out of the pipette beforehand.
Once our trunk had a good amount of the mixture on it, I found a place to set it while we waited for our crystals to grow.
The magic happened overnight! In the morning, we had nice white crystals on our branches and even some on our tree skirt, which made me appreciate the fact that they included one even more! I found a place to display our tree and I kept our bottle of ammonia because they said we can add some more with salt if our other mixture dries up and we want to grow more crystals.
Verdict: Kiwi Crate is one of our favorite subscriptions and this Chemistry Tree was such a fun treat for us! This was such a simple project but so cute, and growing your own snow sure beats the spray snow from a can! I love how excited the kids were to see the crystals growing and it makes a fun and interesting decoration and conversation piece for us to display throughout the holiday season. Everything was so well organized and planned out just like their monthly boxes, so it was a stress-free activity that is much less messy than it looks. This box costs $27.90 ($22.95 + $4.95 shipping) and I think for that price I'd have liked to see one more little activity in the box, however, if you were able to snag this while it was on sale, then it is definitely worth it for a fun learning activity that keeps on growing!
