Love with Food Box Deluxe November 2018 Review
The information card has changed yet again, probably due to Love with Food getting bought out by Snacknation, so there aren’t really themes anymore, but that’s OK since the themes didn’t really seem to mean much anyway:
There was an excessive amount of product literature this month which feels kind of wasteful in
terms of paper use. Included are coupons for Hello Fresh, Lola, Celtic & Co, and Keurig.
Appleways Apple Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 13 for $16.20 (found here for $14.99)
I think we had one of these in another flavor last month. It reminds me quite a bit of a cookie/granola bar hybrid, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s not quite as tasty as a cookie and maybe not quite as nutritious as a granola bar (though there is probably a place for something in between). This is nut-free although it hits a lot of other major allergens (has soy, dairy, egg, and wheat ingredients). Overall I thought this was fine but I wasn’t rushing out to buy more as I tend to go for bars with a lot more protein and a lot less sugar (though that’s a personal preference).
Jana Banana Bar with Peanut Butter (1.34 oz) – Buy 13 for $17.40 (found here for $16.50)
I’ve received these from at least 2-3 food subscriptions before including, I think, Love with Food in the past. This has a very short ingredients list but the first two ingredients are bananas and peanuts and the texture is still pretty good (some of these bars with only a few ingredients are lacking in the texture department, but these work). This might be a nice alternative if you want the nutrition of bananas but have trouble keeping them ripe all week. The peanuts add a bit of protein.
Marich Pancrafted Chocolates Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels (0.5 oz) – Buy 12, 2.1 oz packages for $30
I am not *really* going to complain about getting something called “dark chocolate sea salt caramels” but these were not as fancy as I was hoping based on the name and packaging. If I’d been told they were a new form of Milk Duds that weren’t as sticky, I’d have believed it. These were decent but really didn’t have anything to distinguish them from mass-market brands of candy.
Simply 7 Quinoa Chips in Sea Salt (0.5 oz) – Buy 20 Bags for $21 (found here for $18.99)
These are very, very plain. Despite the fact that quinoa flour is listed as the first ingredient, I believe the combination of corn starch, potato starch, and corn flour from the ingredients list outweighs the quinoa flour. These don’t have much in the way of protein, fat, or carbohydrates, which is probably while the whole bag is only 70 calories. These would work with a dip very well and would probably make a healthier side for a sandwich than regular potato chips (they are reasonably low in sodium).
On the Go Edamame and Berries Fusion (0.7 oz) – Buy 1.5 oz for $1.79
This is a different take on trail mix, with roasted edamame in addition to nuts and dried fruit. I’m not really sold on the inclusion of the edamame, but I’ve never been a fan of roasted edamame – I’ve always found them rather bland. (On the plus side, being bland, they don’t really conflict with any of the other flavors of this product.)
Fourth and Heart Ghee Butter (0.7 oz) – Buy 9 oz for $12.99
This is clarified butter made in New Zealand from the milk of grass-fed cows and is lactose-free. It’s a little bit strange of an inclusion in that it is not a snack, but you do occasionally get pantry items from Love with Food. We used some of this to cook an onion before making a vaguely Indian-inspired dish in the Crock Pot and it worked well enough, but I am not such a ghee connoisseur that I would seek out a specific brand online as opposed to picking up a jar of whatever they have at Whole Foods.
Zee Zee’s Strawberry Grahamz (1 oz) – Buy 15 for $20.80 (found here for $16.99)
This is a kid food, but honestly, one that I didn’t mind in terms of flavor or texture (these contain some whole grains). The only weird thing was, the cookies were all in (large) fragments in the package but it’s like they were packaged that way – you couldn’t piece together the bits to make a whole cookie. They don’t have hardly any fiber but if you read the ingredients, they’re only partially whole grain.
Oogie’s Popcorn in Spicy Nacho Cheddar (1 oz) – Buy 4, 4.25 oz Bags for $19.95
I think I’ve had this before but I don’t even care, it was delicious. Possibly my favorite item in the whole box. (I am a big fan of savory snacks, especially those with cheese flavors.) It’s high in fiber and low in sugar and it has a reasonable amount of sodium for a savory packaged snack.
Field Trip Maple BBQ Pork Stick (1 oz) – Buy 18 for $40 (found here for $29.99)
This is one I had to drop off on the “free snacks” table at work. I’ve been a vegetarian for 25 years and my husband prefers not to eat meat sticks/jerky/etc. Some months of Love with Food are vegetarian but this is not a vegetarian subscription and you should be aware that you will occasionally receive items with gelatin, meat, etc. (Some snacks are allergen-free, but as you can see from the above list, there’s also plenty of wheat, nuts, etc. So this may not be the best subscription for a household with a lot of allergies. But if you are vegetarian or omnivore with few or no allergies, this will probably work out well for you most of the time.)
Pretzel Pete Nuggets in Honey Mustard and Onion (0.8 oz) – Buy 7 Bags for $10.50 (found here for $8.99)
We’ve been getting a lot of pretzels in Love with Food recently but they were usually common supermarket brands. These are new to me. And I really liked them a lot. (There is that savory snack preference showing up again…) I am a fan of honey mustard and of onion and they worked well together here.
RxBar in Pumpkin Spice (1.85 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $25.99
I knew, as soon as I started seeing RxBars in seasonal flavors at the Whole Foods checkout, that I would receive one in a food or fitness subscription box, and it didn’t take long for that premonition to come true. I know “pumpkin spice” is ubiquitous at this time of year, and that not everyone enjoys it, although I, personally, am a fan of the flavor combination. However, like all the other RxBars I’ve tried, this one is super chewy, like really too chewy for my personal preferences. I think it might be better without the egg whites?
Superseedz Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt (0.5 oz) – Buy 17 Packs for $29.80 (found here for $19.99)
I’ve had a lot of plain Superseedz before but these are new to me. Other than the darker color, there’s not much “chocolate” about these. They pretty much just taste like pumpkin seeds.
Drizzilicious S’Mores (0.74 oz) – Buy 6, 4 oz Bags for $21.99
These are very low in calories because they are essentially rice cakes (tiny ones, anyway) with a bit of sweetened chocolate drizzle. Although the product name includes “s’mores,” there’s no actual marshmallow in these (so they are vegetarian). I thought they were all right but I am a regular consumer of rice cakes so the texture here works for me.
Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps in Wasabi Ranch (1.75 oz) – Buy 3.3 oz for $2.49 (found here for $2.24)
I’ve had Snapea Crisps before but I had not ever seen this flavor before. I’m not sure how I feel about it. “Ranch” is a strongly dairy flavor, while “wasabi” is made from Japanese horseradish, and traditional Japanese cooking doesn’t involve dairy, so it’s kind of a strange fusion, though, in practice, the wasabi side of things wins out (but it’s not so strong it’ll clear your sinuses). I think I’d probably buy these in a different flavor instead of this one.
Sunrype Fruit to Go (0.5 oz) – Buy 17 for $19 (found here for $16.99)
This is listed as “apple raspberry” but it is almost all apple with very little raspberry, according to the ingredients list. I gather some people who do hiking and other activities find this a convenient and quick snack, but this is not really a type of product I go for since I prefer to eat whole pieces of fruit. It has a texture similar to other dehydrated fruit/fruit leather types of products and a generically fruity and tart flavor.
Tahinibar with Cocoa Nibs (0.63 oz) – Buy 14 for $17.50 (found here for $14.99)
We received a vanilla flavored one of these last month and it was a pleasant surprise, as was this one. Sort of a melt-in-your-mouth texture and no sesame taste. But, I think I’d give this a different name. It is apparently inspired by halva makers, and I’ve had halva (my Israeli friend in grad school brought some back after a visit to see her family in Jerusalem) and that is just a better association for me when it comes to sweet flavors than tahini, which I associate with salad dressing and hummus. This bar was pretty fragile and arrived in several pieces.
Verb Energy Co. Maple Blueberry Caffeinated Energy Bite (0.78 oz) – Buy 10 for $15 (found here for $13.50)
I had a few of these in different flavors from Clean.Fit Box a few months ago. I actually think the maple blueberry one was my favorite because it managed to hide the bitterness from the caffeine (which, at 65 mg, is a little less than your average cup of coffee). This is vegan and gluten-free and it doesn’t have a ton of sugar, but it’s also quite small compared to other energy bars.
Verdict: There were 17 items in the November 2018 Love with Food Deluxe Box. This is an improvement over the last few months when there were fewer than 15 items per month. Some items were new flavors of brands we’d received before, and
that is fine with me. There were relatively few items that were complete repeats for me and one of those – the popcorn – was something I really love but can’t justify buying in bulk. The pretzels were a great new discovery, too.
