Our Review
This is the first time I have received this subscription, and upon review of past boxes, an information sheet was provided, but this month I received no information card, 3 books, an activity book, and a gift for mom:
Amazing Animals by Cherie Zamazing - Listed Value $9.99 (retail value based off of the back of the book, unable to find it online to purchase)
This squishy covered board book was the first book my 3-year-old reached for! It has very inviting animal illustrations on the cover and a very sweet story inside. It is about a boy who paints different animals on different shaped rocks and they come alive. It is very imaginative and fun. Amazing Animals is 24 pages long and is an easy read book for a late night to bed. The illustrations are bright and engaging, and both of my kids (ages 3 and 5) really enjoyed it. Of course, now our art project for tomorrow is to paint rocks to see if they will come alive!
Step 2 into Reading “Back to Dog-Gone School” by Amy Schmidt - Listed Value $12.99 (found here for $4.53)
This Step 2 reading book is a hardcover book and is one of many “step into reading” books. Step 2 is a series that helps children learn to read, in 5 steps. In step 2, children are recognizing familiar words on sight and sounding out new words with help. It is a recommended for preschool-grade 1. In this particular book, it shows real-life photographs of adorable dogs in school settings. It is a fun book that shows how a dogs first day of school would go. My 5-year-old kindergartener loves this book since he is fairly new at the whole school process. He is starting to read the step 2 books on his own, and the puppy pictures combined with the easy starter text keeps him engaged while my 3-year-old loves to listen! And to be honest, where can you go wrong with a picture of a puppy!?!
Halloween ABC Board Book by Sarah Albee - Listed Value $7.99 (found here for $4.99)
I am a sucker for a board book, and a themed board book makes me even happier. We are only a few days away from Halloween and my kids are in full swing! They want everything to be Halloween themed! This book was a very welcome addition to our collection. The bright colors and the upper and lower case alphabet letters were very useful for my boys. My 3-year-old is working on letter recognition, and my 5-year-old is mastering letter sounds, so this was a fun, educational book for both. Of course, it doesn’t hurt all of the illustrations show adorable costumes ideas for next Halloween, and even feature the very costume my 3-year-old will be wearing this year! (a jack-o-lantern, see photo of him in it below) While I don’t personally enjoy reading Christmas/Halloween/Thanksgiving/4th of July books throughout the year, my kids do, so this book will be read over and over again, no matter how far off the holiday is!
PJ Masks Ready For Action Activity Book - Retail Value $4.99
The last book I received in this shipment was the PJ Masks Ready for Action activity book. While we personally only have Local TV channels, my kids know all about PJ Masks and happen to be obsessed with them. We opened it up, and he was excited. On the first page, there were 6 different cardstock press out: pencil toppers, which of course we had to utilize at that very second! We just couldn’t complete the activities without a Catboy themed pencil! The age range for this book is 3-6 and I completely agree. My 3-year-old was able to complete the mazes, draw the pictures, and connect the dots, while my 5-year-old enjoyed the missing word activities, word finds, and coding activities. My boys also enjoyed the reward stickers that were included to put on finished pages, making this activity book a definite hit!
Le Naturel white tea body lotion 40 mL
Last but not least, is the “Mom” item of the box. This month I received a 40 mL vial of “Le Naturel white tea body lotion.” On the back of the vial, it states that it is made of environmentally friendly contents and packaging. It also states more information on this product can be found at www.hotelemporium.com, but I was unable to find a value. The lotion itself is a thin, white lotion that has a subtle earthy tea scent. It rubs in nicely without leaving my hands looking greasy, and the vial is the perfect size to fit in my small crossbody purse! A nice addition just for me!
And of course, I had to share a photo of my 3-year-old in his Jack O Lantern costume that was also in the Halloween ABCs book:
Verdict: Although this is my first month reviewing My First Reading Club, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, I must say I am thoroughly impressed! Reading and child education are 2 things I am truly passionate about, and the books I received were all high quality and age appropriate. 3 out of the 4 books were hardcover, and 2 were board books. This means a lot to a mom with a rough and tough 3-year-old! The activity book pertained to both of my children, and the Halloween themed book really put the icing on the cake so close to the holiday! As you can see by the above pictures we were pleasantly surprised, and can’t wait to see what we get next month!
The value of this month's books come in at $35.96 (not including the mom gift)! This surpasses the $26.99 cost, and is really great considering all of the books are truly appropriate for the given age group. Not only that, but the “Amazing Animals” book was copyrighted in 2018, while PJ Masks are still very much “in.” The thought that went into this curation was great, and I really feel this company is passionate about kids and literacy. The only thing I felt was missing is the information card which past months had included.
