Sweet Sparkle October 2018 "Purple Potion" Review
Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Purple Potion” featuring four makeup products and one makeup tool.
Doucce Cheek Blush in Feeling You - Retail Value $28
The look and weight of this compact is so impressive; I am really digging the sleek, reflective gunmetal packaging. I am not one to switch up makeup for seasons, but this deepened coral blush seems like it could the perfect pop of color for fall. I barely touched my brush to this powder and it was saturated with color, so I’ll just have to remember to use a light hand with this one. All in all, I am very happy with the performance of this blush!
Kokie Cosmetics Liquid Lip Poudre in Stunner - Retail Value $7
Kokie Cosmetics is a brand I’ve sampled several times, thanks to Ipsy, and I am always really happy to see them in subscription boxes. I have this lippie in a dark mulberry color, and I actually really like this formula. It is a liquid lip that doesn’t dry out my lips (right away), and it doesn’t get clumped up or tacky when reapplying. Straight out of the tube, I wasn’t sure I’d like this light, nude color, but I think it grew on me.
Hikari Cosmetics Cream Pigment Eye Shadow in Cosmic - Retail Value $13
This shadow is the focus of the entire box and for good reason! The info card describes this purple as “dramatic and sultry” which pretty much sums it up! This cream pigment was easy to pick up on my finger and built up very nicely on my lid. The packaging is a cheap plastic, and I struggled to twist the lid back on every time I opened the jar, but other than that, I think this eye pigment is awesome!
Iby Dual Brow Highlighter - Retail Value $8
I’ve tried a few brow highlighters, but I don’t really feel like it is a necessary step in my makeup routine. Both sides were pretty stiff and rough to apply; I tried to warm them up on my hand before using them on my eye area, but it was still a bit of a struggle. I used the shimmery side blended under my brows, but the peachy shade was way too dark to do any highlighting on my pale skin. Overall, I just think I have too many products that can multitask as a brow highlighter, and this may just take up valuable real estate in my vanity.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Kabuki Brush - Retail Value $6
This is my first e.l.f. Brush! I like kabuki brushes for face powders and bronzers, and it seemed to do a good job dispersing and blending out product. It is a soft brush, but it isn’t as soft as my Real Techniques or It Cosmetics brushes--but if you’re into beauty on a budget, I would definitely check this one out!
Swatches of the makeup (left to right): Doucce blush, Kokie lippie, IBY brow highlights (shimmer then matte), Hikari shadow.
Here is the look I came up with using the blush, shadow, and lip product. I also used the brow highlight, but it didn’t show up like I wanted. I used Hikari cream pigment in Cosmic on my lid and lower lash line, deepening the outer corners with Uncut eyeshadow by Urban Decay. I also spiced up the inner corners of my lids with Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in PYRO.
I loved this look and will definitely be recreating it in the future!
Verdict: Sweet Sparkle really came through this month! I loved my eye look, thanks to the Hikari shadow, and I will definitely get a lot of use out of the Kokie lippie and Doucce blush, too. The only item I wasn’t fond of this month was the brow highlight, but that is definitely a huge step up from last month. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality products in this month’s box, and I hope that Sweet Sparkle keeps the surprises coming!
