Special Delivery From Taste of Home Fall 2018 Review
I love the info booklet that comes with this box. It goes a step beyond a card, with a thoughtfully written product list and a magazine-like section of information about food and cooking.
I got these recipe cards, too. That butternut squash chili is calling my name!!!
Skinny Spatula by GIR - Retail Value $9.95
This spatula has a narrower design that's supposed to be easier to maneuver around inside containers like jars, etc. I like the bright red color—it'll be easy to find in my bustling utensil drawer!
Epicurean Wood Fiber Cutting Board - Retail Value $12.99
Small cutting boards like this 8" x 6" one are always handy for little jobs like slicing lemons for tea or limes for cocktails. But I recently used this cutting board as a cheese board for serving charcuterie at a party. The muddled finish looks rather handsome with a few pretty cheeses and grapes strewn across it!
Dollar Days Small Clips
I couldn't find these clips online, but I assume they're not too pricey, given the name of the brand! They don't feel terribly sturdy, but I'm never going to turn down a set of chip clips! Clips like these are the one thing I'm ALWAYS looking for in my kitchen.
Taste of Home Refrigerator Magnets
I'm most grateful for that conversions magnet—it'll be very helpful not to have to look up conversions on my phone mid-recipe with messy hands. (I'm not too proud to say that sometimes I'd rather use a tablespoon than wash a dirty measuring cup!)
Taste of Home Favorites 25th Anniversary Cookbook - Listed Value $29.99, Found here as a spiral-bound edition for $15.92
It's been a minute since I've bought myself a real cookbook. I've gotten in the habit of just pinning recipes I find online, but I've gotta say, there's something rather magical about paging through the gorgeous photos in a hardbound book like this one. It's nice to be able to dog-ear pages and circle different recipes to try. These dishes look like the kinds of heartwarming dishes I'd love to serve at holiday parties this fall and winter.
I'm trying my best not to ONLY focus on the desserts (which look amazing)!
Gustus Vitae Spicy Chocolate Cinnamon Cane Sugar, 2.5 oz. - Retail Value $10.00
I'm not a great baker, so I'm mostly excited about this chocolatey blend as a garnish—I'm imagining this rich, gently spicy blend rimming a glass of Irish coffee... I love that the container not only contains small holes for dusting and a bigger hole for pouring, but a magnetic bottom so that you can stick it to the side of the fridge.
SKOY All-Purpose Cloth - Buy a 4 pack for $7.99 (found here for $6.99)
Paper towels are the one thing that I have a hard time living without, though I know they're wasteful. Sometimes the absorbency or texture is just what I need, especially when it comes to cleaning, etc. This reusable cloth has the lightness and some of the gentle texture that I like in a paper towel, but I can easily wash it and reuse it!
OXO Good Grips Microplane/Zester - Retail Value $14.95 (found here for $11.96)
I've been wanting a microplane for awhile! I'm a big fan of tea made with real ginger, but grating ginger in a big block-shaped grater can be a clumsy process. It's much easier to wield this smaller tool. And this microplane does a great job—it's sharp and relatively easy to rinse clean, too!
Verdict: This was my first Special Delivery from Taste of Home box, and I really liked it! I could totally see getting this as a gift for a food lover. My mom, for instance, loves cooking but doesn't have a very tricked-out kitchen, so I could see her getting so excited about these recipes and tools! But I also love the idea of this quarterly box as an amateur cook myself. I think the fact that it's quarterly makes the investment feel more approachable to me. Plus that timing means I have a longer time to try all of the recipes and foods inside. But for maybe the chip clips were of nice quality. They're the kind of items I'd expect to see at a place like Target—things that aren't terribly expensive but will last me years in the future. While I'm not sure if this box would be right for an experienced cook (or someone who already has a well-stocked kitchen), I think it's a lot of fun for someone who likes cooking and wants to learn more!
