Accio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Daily Prophet Front TopAccio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Daily Prophet Front Top

The info card for this box is always an “issue” of the Daily Prophet, and it explains all the delights about to be discovered within. This month’s theme is “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them,” ah, I see what you did there, Accio! I imagine we’ll see a number of items related to the new installment of “Fantastic Beasts” that just hit theaters. Let’s see what we have here, shall we?

Accio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Demiguise Protection Tee Shirt Top

Demiguise Protection Tee Shirt - Retail Value $25

In the wizarding world, demiguises are hunted for their pelts, much like animals here are endangered for similar poaching reasons. This tee shirt advertises their protection, and this company actually works with conservation organizations on chimps, which is really cool. I love the color of the shirt; tees are a pretty common item in this box, but they do a great job of keeping the tee shirts very different from each other!

Accio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Newt’s Padlock Keychain In Hand TopAccio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Newt’s Padlock Keychain In Hand Closer Top

Newt’s Padlock Keychain - Listed Value $6

Just like on Newt’s case, this keychain signifies that your keys, bag, etc, are safe for anyone to touch! I love items like this, that are completely from the world of the fandom, and you really have to be a fan to “get it.” The stitching on this is really beautiful - it’s super well-made. I also love the little blue stamp - it’s customized to my beloved Ravenclaw house!

Accio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Flying Thestral Enamel Pin Package FrontAccio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Flying Thestral Enamel Pin In Hand Top

Flying Thestral Enamel Pin - Listed Value $15

This was a super nice surprise! Also from the original Harry Potter books, thestrals are skeletal, winged, horse-like creatures that are invisible to many but can be seen by those who have witnessed and have a special understanding of death. They’re very gentle, and even though they look scary, they’re not a sign of ill portent. They are one of my favorite magical creatures! This pin is a really high-quality item. There is a slight edge of green-ish glitter under the wings that adds dimensionality, and the outlines are so crisp and well-done.

Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Swooping Evil Venom Package back Top

Swooping Evil Venom - Listed Value $8

Another offering from Lovegood Bath Potions this month - as some of you may recall, this shop also made the Peruvian darkness bath powder from the August box. The ingredients in this concoction include peach, lavender, and tea tree, and it smells like heaven! Swooping Evil Venom, as Scamander discovers, can remove bad memories when it is distilled properly. A hot bath with this powder definitely washes away a long day, and I loved that there was enough in the bag to use it twice!

Accio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Magizoologist Recruitment Print Front TopAccio! Subscription Box Review “Magical Creatures and How to Spot Them” November 2018 - Magizoologist Recruitment Print Front Closer

Magizoologist Recruitment Print - Listed Value $12

There is usually some kind of really high-quality art in these boxes, and I’ve been happily collecting it for a Harry Potter room I’m planning in my house! The print I received is an Accio-exclusive item for this box.  I love the colors of this print - they’re perfect for the room this will eventually be displayed in. It’s a neat take on fandom, too; I like that it’s a recruitment poster for this specific department of the Ministry of Magic.

Verdict: This month’s Accio! box is leaving me feeling extremely magical! I loved the direction these items took; nothing felt too referential or overly forced. The marketing for “Fantastic Beasts” has been pretty intense, and in the face of all the products that have been available, these items are so unique and you can tell they’re truly made by fans. I love their soft tee shirts, really enjoyed the bath potion and thestral pin, can’t wait to use the keychain, and I’m excited to put the print into a frame! There was a good variety to the items and I thought everything was particularly high-quality this month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign-up today? No, you will receive the November box next. Order before the 5th to get the current month’s box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $39.99 + $9.99 shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of $10. I love that these items are all handmade from small companies, and the deep fandom knowledge really adds to the box’s value!

I’d like to see how that bath soak changes colors!

I didn’t want to subject you readers to my scary 1950’s bathtub, Amber! ^_^ I’ll be sure to snap a pic if I get another bath item like this one – but you’ve been warned! 😛
